The original Nations Cup qualifying format could still work, albeit badly. It would just mean that all three teams in whatever 3rd round group Chad made would qualify automatically for the nations cup even if Chad were to make the World Cup. I still can't find any confirmation as to which ACN qualifying format they're going with though.
African qualifiers have never been easy, the best teams have always found it tough in away games, where they usually have to deal with hostile crowds, biased officiating, poor pitches, and home sides who play like their life is on the line. BUt today is something else, the qualifiers are this tough in the opening round, I can only imagine what will take place when the final round gets underway. Hopefully tomorrow NIgeria can break the trend and be the first favorite to win on the road this round.
Except that the CAF has stated that Chad's matches in this round do not count. Only matches between the other three teams in the group have a say in which teams qualify for the Cup of Nations. That's why it's logically impossible for the Cup of Nations qualifiers to NOT be determined in this round (unless the CAF changes the rules again... which is obviously a possibility with this organization).

See here. The solution settled upon was the following: once all the matches in the four-team groups have been played, the results between the second- and fourth-placed sides will not be considered when comparing the second-placed teams' respective records.
Letter dated yesterday reiterates the original format (top 3 in each final group qualify for ACN). http://www.cafonline.com/index.php?lng=1&module=media&idrub=97375&idnews=83361
Well if that's true then they lied when they said that Chad's matches would not affect CAN qualifiers, since their matches obviously will affect which teams make the final round. In addition, what happens if Chad and Angola are both drawn in the same group in the final round? It's unlikely, but possible... so what then? Do they have a 3-way playoff with the other three fourth placed teams in the final round?? It really is idiotic if they stick with that scheme, for the reasons I've listed and more...

Following up on ... https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14203250&postcount=26 we need to know how criterion 3 is modified by the presence of 1 (and maybe 2) unequally sized groups. Is the "results against 4th team desn't count rule" going to be applied to the points "carried over" that determine a third of the seeding formula? if its the case, as of today with 2 games left to play for everyone except groups 5, 10 and 11, the pots for the final round are: Code: TEAM CAN PTS FIFA PTS WCQ PTS TOTAL Cam 15 20 7 42 Egy 16 18 6 40 Gha 14 19 6 39 Civ 13 17 7 37 Nig 10 16 6 32 Tun 12 11 6 29 Mor 6 15 6 27 Ang 11 10 4 25 Mli 7 12 6 25 Gui 9 14 1 24 Sen 5 13 4 22 Zam 8 7 4 19 RSA 4 9 1 14 TOG* 1 8 3 12 DRC 1 5 3 9 KEN 1 1 7 9 BFS 1 1 6 8 RWA 1 1 6 8 BEN 2 1 3 6 UGA* 1 1 4 6 BOT 1 1 4 6 SIE 1 1 4 6 GAM* 1 1 4 6 SWA 1 1 4 6 * teams currently in third place in their respective groups. There are a number of other candidates, but I figure that anyone who only has 5 points as of now would most likely fail to get out of the 4th pot. Also please bear in mind that in the groups with a bit of suspense for the fourth placed spot (1,2, 4, 5, 7, 10), if the last placed team changes, chances are the teams that qualify may have their scores modified. as it stands, the top pot is pretty much cast in stone unless Nigeria mails in its last 2 matches (one of Tunisia's matches is last placed Seychelles) or Egypt contrives to let Malawi overtake it for the second place. In the second pot, the only real question mark is if Angola can hold on for the second place. If not, Senegal will most likely move up a pot and Uganda will enter the last one. If Senegal stay in pot 3, they will most likely end up in the GOD of the final round. There is however going to be an almighty tussle between DRC, Kenya Burkina Faso, Rwanda and a number of as yet unidentified teams to avoid the 4th pot. A lot will depend on how Togo do away to Zambia and home to Swaziland in the last matches remaining in group 11. If Togo and Zambia draw, and then Swaziland beat Togo, two spots in pot 3 will be probably liberated.
Honestly, the fourth pot doesn't matter too much. I can't see any of those teams winning one of the final groups. Out of pot 3, I think Senegal has the possibility of winning a group if they're lucky with the draw. I'd even give Zambia and DR Congo an outside shot of they get lucky with the draw. Here are some groups I can come up with using those pots: Group of Death: Cameroon Morocco Senegal Botswana Group of Life: Egypt Mali South Africa (remember - they're already an automatic qualifier) Swaziland Possibility of a third seed stealing the WC bid: Egypt Mali Senegal Swaziland
This is the main reason I don't want South africa to go through the next round. its just way too unfair to the other groups. Here we have a situation where the third seed (and a relatively decent one at that) has no real impetus to put forth its best team or play its hardest, making it essentially a 2 horse race from the get go. In a similar manner, the 4th seed in Angola's group (assuming they get through) might just be happy having qualified for the CAN, knowing full well they can't get to the Cup. They might start giving the younger players experience against top class teams from as early as their 3rd game.
As for as South Africa, it's not that they won't put through their best effort. My understanding is that their matches won't even count. My group of life would essentially be a three-team group as far as WCQ are concerned. And since Swaziland has zero chance of winning a final group, my group of life would become a head-to-head battle between Egypt and Mali. I think that any African team given an opportunity to play head-to-head with Mali for a World Cup bid, would take it in a heart beat.
hey midknight, Nigeria is missing 3 WC points on your seeds chart. YOuve got them at 6 when they should be at 9. THey got 12 points -3, or are you considering E Guinea as the worst team so the 2 victories dont count ? If so in that case Tunisias game against Seychelles wont count either, so they can only get 3 more points.
All of the 2nd place scores are correct. Equatorial Guinea is in last place right now, which is why those matches are discounted. And Tunisia currently has six points against teams that aren't Seychelles, which makes their score correct as well.
I thought I read on this site that the first two games for each team would count double. So Swaziland would have 4 extra points, Togo 3, and Zambia 1, and every other team's points would count normally.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure teams get all their points counted for purposes of seeding, considering that it says in the African seeding thing it says teams can earn up to 18 points for that portion of the seeding.
I must have missed that. If you guys are right, we end up with Code: TEAM CAN PTS FIFA PTS WCQ PTS TOTAL Cam 15 20 10 45 Egy 16 18 9 43 Gha 14 19 9 42 Civ 13 17 8 38 Nig 10 16 12 38 Tun 12 11 9 32 Mor 6 15 9 30 Gui 9 14 7 30 Ang 11 10 7 28 Mli 7 12 9 28 Sen 5 13 8 26 Zam 8 7 5 20 RSA 4 9 4 17 TOG* 1 8 6 15 DRC 1 5 9 15 LBY 1 4 9 15 BFS 1 1 12 14 BEN 2 1 9 12 RWA 1 1 9 11 CVI 1 1 9 11 SWA 1 1 8 10 KEN 1 1 7 9 UGA* 1 1 7 9 ZIM* 1 3 5 9 ALG 1 1 6 8 CON 1 1 6 8 MLW* 1 1 6 8 ETH* 1 1 6 8 BOT 1 1 5 7 GAM* 1 1 5 7 SIE 1 1 4 6 * teams currently in third place in their respective groups. No big changes at the top but Libya is now making a strong claim for a third pot spot at the expense of Togo, DRC and Burkina Faso. Burkiuna and DRC have exceptional goal differences thanks to Seychelles and Djibouti though
Of course, since it's Africa they could easily switch it up mid-tournament ans we might be wrong. I wouldn't be the first time. It doesn't look like it'll make a difference for seeding at the top, as you showed, but could affect some of the lower pots.
