Fifa confederation reform

    I have no problem with balancing the confederation, by size and/or talent. I have no problem with using on field performance to rate confederations in terms of how many teams they qualify like UEFA does for the UCL.

    But unless you are going to delay picking a host until all 32 finalists are known, I have a serious problem with the host's bid coming at the expense of another team in its confederation. Do Russia or the UAE deserve to be in the World Cup over better teams from Europe and Asia respectively? (Let's avoid the politics for the moment) Did the United States deserve its place in '94, when it had only qualified once in nearly a half century and was not yet a lock?

    Maybe I am still annoyed by the unfairness of UEFA somehow deciding that its limit of four teams qualifying for the Champions League outweighs its desire to host the defending champion in the tournament, but the host should earn a place or be given a place. Not be handed someone else's place.
