| Feb 15-25 | Tournament Home on FIFA.com Got my tickets for the final, but pretty annoyed that Switzerland didn't qualify after bronze in 2021. The groups: Group A: UAE, Egypt, USA, Italy Group B: Spain, Iran, Tahiti, Argentina Group C: Senegal, Belarus, Tahiti, Argentina Group D: Brazil, Oman, Portugal, Mexico Interesting that 2 semifinalists from last time: Russia + Switzerland are not even there this time for different reasons obviously. While Senegal and Japan, who played in the other semifinal, are both in the same group this time. Going this weekend, but probably won't make the final unfortunately as we're still on the Friday / Saturday weekend schedule.
It all starts tomorrow. Most of you can probably watch on FIFA+. Looking at the rosters, I notice the following teams have a lot of free agents without club affiliation: Mexico, UAE, and USA. The one that surprises me is the UAE. Beach soccer is relatively popular here and I assumed the local (government owned) teams would have a beach side. But being a small country maybe it’s more of a full-time FA programme. https://fdp.fifa.org/assetspublic/ce125/pdf/SquadLists-English.pdf
Not really any major surprises on the first day but it did end in a thrilling 6:6 match between Spain and Iran (that Iran won on penalties). As for the parallel discussion in the forum titled "Which Confederation is Better? AFC or CONCACAF" that's not even a question in beach soccer. I just realized that Concacaf hasn't won a game since, wait for it, 2017 - and that's only thanks to then hosts Bahamas. If you take out that single win by the Bahamas (over Ecuador) you have to go back all the way to 2013 for the first Concacaf win! The US alone has lost seven in a row. And here I thought there are lots of beaches in Concacaf @Paul Calixte .
I don't follow beach soccer closely, but I think I read that the UAE advanced for the first time from its group by beating the US. I also know Iran advanced after beating Argentina 6:3. Tahiti (which seem to be a serious side in this sport) also advanced beating Spain. For Spain and Argentina to be left behind Iran and Tahiti clearly shows the pecking order in beach soccer isn't similar to football!
Just came back from both of those games. Iran looked good and had great crowd support in the stands. I think they can get far. Yes, the OFC has Tahiti and CAF has Senegal. Concacaf on the other hand…
Group A: 1- Italy 2- UAE (3- Egypt 4- USA) Group B: 1- Iran 2- Tahiti (3- Argentina 4- Spain) Group C 1- Belarus 2- Japan (3- Senegal 4- Colombia) Group D 1- Brazil 2- Portugal (3- Oman 4- Mexico) QFs: Brazil v Japan Belarus v Portugal Iran v UAE Italy v Tahiti
According to the TV commentator for the UAE-USA game, four of the UAE players play abroad. Not sure where that info came from because it's not in the official squad list, but if true, it's an interesting contrast from their 11-a-side team. The US team was missing its top goalscorer due to injury, and it showed. Also notably, all the pros on the US team play for indoor soccer clubs and don't play beach soccer regularly. I think that might be a pattern throughout CONCACAF.
Well, whatever the underlying reasons are - it's not a flattering record. Here are the results since 2013, the last time Concacaf got more than one win at the Beach Soccer World Cup: 2015 | Italy - Costa Rica 6:1 2015 | Costa Rica - Switzerland 3:4 2015 | Oman - Costa Rica 7:2 2015 | Brazil - Mexico 5:1 2015 | Mexico - Spain 1:3 2015 | Mexico - Iran 2:3 2017 | Bahamas - Switzerland 2:3 2017 | Senegal - Bahamas 10:1 2017 | Bahamas - Ecuador 4:1 2017 | Iran - Mexico 3:2 2017 | Mexico - Nigeria 4:5 AET 2017 | Italy - Mexico 8:1 2017 | Portugal - Panama 7:0 2017 | Panama - UAE 2:2 (2:3 PSO) 2017 | Paraguay - Panama 5:2 2019 | Switzerland - USA 8:6 2019 | USA - Japan 3:4 2019 | USA - Paraguay 1:5 2019 | Uruguay - Mexico 1:0 2019 | Tahiti - Mexico 6:1 2019 | Mexico - Italy 2:6 2021 | Russia - USA 5:4 AET 2021 | Japan - USA 4:3 2021 | USA - Paraguay 4:9 2021 | Belarus - El Salvador 5:5 (5:4 PSO) 2021 | Brazil - El Salvador 4:2 2021 | El Salvador - Switzerland 7:8 2024 | USA - Italy 1:3 2024 | UAE - USA 3:2 AET 2024 | Egypt - USA 5:4 AET 2024 | Portugal - Mexico 8:2 2024 | Mexico - Oman 2:5 2024 | Mexico - Brazil 3:4 AET The only Concacaf win in the last ten years is from 2017 hosts Bahamas, and they don't normally qualify out of Concacaf. There are some respectable scores in there but that is still only 1 win out 33 matches. I'm just going to come out and say it. Concacaf is the OFC of Beach Soccer.
Imma take a wild guess and say that Lesly St. Fleur scored in that game... You may also recognize him as a top scorer for their regular football national team
Thought I saw somebody there with a pink Inter Miami limited edition "Leagues Cup Winner" jersey on there but was probably someone else Anyway some highlights from the first day.... Today would be probably the best day to go, 4 meaningful quarterfinal matches so probably the best "bang for buck" day at least....
Yep and after Belarus shocked Portugal we're just down to one former champion and finalist, Brazil, so a good chance of a debut winner. Italy have been to the final before, and Iran to the semis but this is uncharted territory for Belarus... anyway, 2nd video of last weekend's trip to Dubai. Iran's game is just after the 6th minute or something like that...
I watched the part from minute 6 (Iran-Arg) and looked like a fun atmosphere for the Iranian fans. Regarding the semifinals, Brazil would be obviously favored against Iran but I read some interesting history about Brazil's coach, Marco Octovio. He had coached Iran for some time, including several older veterans on this squad as well our current coach Ali Naderi. Octovio is well liked and credited by Iran's beach soccer community for laying the foundations for Iran's current squad. Interestingly, however, one of Iran's rare wins against Brazil was against an Octovio led Brazil team in the last Intercontinental Cup when Iran beat Brazil 2:1 in the final to lift the beach soccer equivalent of the Confederations Cup title. (Iran is a powerhouse in the latter tournament with 4 titles -- the most tied with Russia and one more than Brazil.) Speaking of Russia, they aren't playing in this World Cup but Belarus is doing a fine job filling the void. In fact, Belarus and Brazil may be regarded as favorites to make the final. And I wouldn't put it past Belarus to win the title.
Certainly wasn't me. When I wear pink it's Palermo. But maybe you saw a pink mickey mouse t-shirt on a kid and your mind associated that with the Leagues Cup. It happens. I had tickets for Thursday but, sadly, also had fever. Looking forward to Sunday however. Belarus looking good. Bryshtel is a clinical striker.
One thing I like about beach soccer is that I can watch Iran lose and not feel depressed all week. And good thing too, since I am still not over Iran's Asian Cup football loss to Qatar. That one really hurt. Congratulations to Brazil but frankly I wasn't impressed by them. I thought Iran's players just chocked once they were up 2:0 and became almost goofy afterwards, letting Brazil crawl-back. Brazil's 2nd goal was nice but overall I expected better from them and wouldn't have minded if Iran had lost to a more impressive side.
Iran destroyed Belarus with 6 goals and got bronze too bad we were the best team and deserved to be champs , Brazil will easily destroy Italy.
As mentioned, Iran won the consolation match against Belarus 6:1. Not much consolation in my eyes though since after seeing Iran against Brazil, I feel Iran was overall the best team in the tournament. But I guess repeating our best previous finish (2017) and placing 3rd shouldn't be much of a disappointment either.
Just returned from the final. Brazil were deserved winners. At Brazil up 3:2, Italy scored an own goal that really took the wind out of their sails. Missed third place (there was a good happy hour nearby) but not surprised Iran won. This could have been Iran's year to win it all. The Beach Soccer WC is back next year (this was a modified 2023 edition) and will be hosted for the first time in CAF (Seychelles) - the only confederation that hasn't hosted yet.
