So other team's success are all due to factors such as lack of English teams and easy route to the finals. What is Sporting's excuse for an epic failure at European level during the same time frame as Benfica's success and Porto's success?
Football historians agree that if the ECC/CL began a few years earlier than 1956, SCP would have won it. SCP was one of the best team in Europe in the mid 40s-mid 50s the first ECC, SCP was selected to represent Portugal (even though they weren't champions that season) and the first game was SCP vs Partizan in Lisbon.
Yeah, the ECC/CL didn't exist before 1956 but Sporting must of easily picked up a handful of Latin Cups since they had the best team in Europe in that time frame. Less teams than the ECC/CL would of made it almost unfair for Sporting.
SCP made the first latin cup final and lost to Barcelona on the tail end of the cinco violins they beat Grande Torino.
Maybe Sporting was the best in the world in the 30s. Had there been a Latin cup, you guys would win every year.
