Mary Weiss, the lead singer and focal point of the Shangri-Las — one of the truly legendary girl groups of the early 1960s, with hits like “Leader of the Pack,” “Great Big Kiss,” “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” and “Heaven Only Knows” — has died. Weiss was 75.
Mid- 60s. And I wouldn't trust that 75 figure too much-- I saw her on tv in 64 and if she was only 16 it was an early maturing...6 hits, 64 to 66, of which three reached the top 10-- "Leader," "Walkin'," and something called "I Can Never Go Home Anymore," of which I have absolutely no memory. Often confused with the Shirelles who were two years earlier and just about twice as successful. And probably the model for the "Chantrellines" in "That Thing You Do." And now I've let them steal some of Mary Weiss' last headline, and I'm not sure if that is appropriate or just inevitable... Rip Mary...

I remember that play. There were so many DC residents in college that I came to dislike both the WFT and Georgetown basketball, and I am ashamed of the latter to this day. This and Eli Manning's first win are the Super Bowls I enjoyed most without a dog in the fight.

When she was good sometimes she was great. When she was bad she could be truly awful. Sometimes she got around the backside of awful into inexplicably good. But never was she ordinary-- there was never anyone even a little like her. RIP sister, and I'm glad to have seen you in concert when you were still nobody... "Don't jump up and down on my toes. You loved me once, y'know."
Oh, I'm jealous......I've seen a few, myself; but nothing like him. EDIT: And I want my copy autographed "taosjohn".
