Monday at 8 eastern FSC showed what appeared to be the entire 1992 Community Shield match - Liverpool v. Leeds. Great stuff - a bit more appealing to me as, unlike a lot of stuff on ESPN Classic, I'd never seen it before - it wasn't really a rerun - for me anyway. I never saw Cantona before - not even a brief highlight. He had a hat trick. I haven't been paying attention much this summer. Is "FA Archives" a regular thing?
Not sure but that was the first one that I noticed. They are showing another one next Monday (1996 Charity Shield Classic - perhaps another chance to see Cantona). Watching that game made me realize how much better most EPL games are today (especially defensively). Granted a 1992 pre-season match might not be the best choice to draw general conclusions from.
I just liked seeing that Graham Souness was still crap as a manager even back then. Only back then he looked like a 70's porn star with his moustache.
They need to show more of these instead of PAID PROGRAMMING 10 hours a day. I think I set one to record but Hell's Kitchen overruled it.
FSC will also show the 2001 Liverpool-Man Utd Charity Shield on 7/25 and the 2004 Arsenal-Man Utd Charity Shield on 8/1. All leading up to FSC's coverage of the Arsenal-Chelsea Charity Shield on 8/7.
Leeds-Liverpool was a lot of fun to watch. Of everything in my tape library of games, I realized that this was the first match in my collection played at Wembley. The Leeds goalkeeper's jersey was something to behold, too. Yikes.
Goalkeeper uniforms (except the current St. Entienne keeper's Spider Man outfit complete with mask and his crazy polka-dot getup) have really been relatively classy for the last 3 or 4 years. I will say, the polka dot outfit was hilarious, and he played well with it!
Does anybody know if this is something FSC will be continuing this once the season starts for most of the European Leagues? I hope so, because these classic games are kinda nice. It'd be even better if they could expand it to include games from more countries.
