I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting pretty excited about the possibility of Everton earning a 7th or even 6th place in the final table. In our favor, Everton have a game-in-hand vs. the teams closest to us in the table. Though, of course, that game-in-hand is a tough match at Anfield. As of 2 March, here are the current standings of the teams 6th through 12th in the table: Newcastle: 43 pts, 26 GP, 0 GD Liverpool: 39 pts, 25 GP, 6 GD Norwich: 35 pts, 26 GP, -5 GD Sunderland: 33 pts, 26 GP, 4 GD Everton: 33 pts, 25 GP, -1 GD Fulham: 33 pts, 26 GP, -4 GD Stoke: 33 pts, 26 GP, 4 GD
Here are the matches of March 3rd and 4th for the teams close to Everton in the table: Newcastle vs. Sunderland Liverpool vs. Arsenal Stoke vs. Norwich QPR vs. Everton Fulham vs. Wolves On the plus side for Everton, there are 2 matches where both teams are close to us in the table: Newcastle vs. Sunderland; and Stoke vs. Norwich. So at least 2 teams close to us in the table will achieve at most 1 point this weekend. Also, with Arsenal playing good football right now, I'm pretty positive about their chances at Anfield. I think the Arsenal should pull off at least a draw, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them beat the Red Shiite. Good luck, Gunners!!
All things considered, Everton's 1-1 draw at QPR wasn't a bad result. Unfortunately, a number of teams near us in the table had an excellent weekend, causing Everton to slide from 10th to 13th. As of March 5th, here are the current standings of the teams 6th through 14th in the table: Newcastle: 44 pts, 27 GP, 0 GD Liverpool: 39 pts, 26 GP, 5 GD Fulham: 36 pts, 27 GP, 1 GD Stoke: 36 pts, 27 GP, -11 GD West Brom: 35 pts, 27 GP, -1 GD ; Nice job beating Chelsea! Norwich: 35 pts, 27 GP, -6 GD Sunderland: 34 pts, 27 GP, 4 GD Everton: 34 pts, 26 GP, -1 GD Swansea: 33 pts, 27 GP, -4 GD
we needed that win yesterday.... if we'd got it, going into the derby we'd have the chance to draw level with DS at the same time as taking 3 points from them. now that would have been a happy day! COYB. stop this bullshit. we are a good team so ********ing play like it.
On the sorta bright side, if we do manage to beat Liverpool in the derby (with any luck that idiot Suarez will get sent off), we'll leapfrog a lot of teams and may even jump ahead of the Red Shiite if we do well in our next league match vs. Spurs and Liverpool struggle at Sunderland.
Everton vaulted up the table from 13th to 9th after this weekend's results. Almost all of Everton's rivals in the middle of the table faltered, with the exception of Sunderland (who beat Liverpool) and Swansea (who beat Man City). This weekend's results for Everton's mid-table rivals: Arsenal 2 - 1 Newcastle United Sunderland 1 - 0 Liverpool Aston Villa 1 - 0 Fulham Chelsea 1 - 0 Stoke Man United 2 - 0 West Brom Norwich 1 - 1 Wigan Everton 1 - 0 Tottenham Swansea 1 - 0 Man City As of March 13th, here are the current standings of the teams 6th through 14th in the table: Newcastle: 44 pts, 28 GP, -1 GD Liverpool: 39 pts, 27 GP, 4 GD Sunderland: 37 pts, 28 GP, 5 GD Everton: 37 pts, 27 GP, 0 GD Fulham: 36 pts, 28 GP, 0 GD Stoke: 36 pts, 28 GP, -12 GD West Brom: 35 pts, 28 GP, -3 GD Norwich: 36 pts, 28 GP, -6 GD Swansea: 36 pts, 28 GP, -3 GD
With 9 league games remaining, if Everton play up to their ability, they should finish out the season strong. Everton's remaining schedule: 24 March: Swansea (currently 9th, 37 pts) vs. Everton (currently 10th, 37 pts) 31 March: Everton vs. West Brom (13th, 36 pts) 7 April: Norwich (14th, 36 pts) vs. Everton 9 April: Everton vs. Sunderland (9th, 37 pts) 14 April: Stoke (11th, 37 pts) vs. Everton 22 April: Man United (1st, 70 pts) vs. Everton 28 April: Everton vs. Fulham (12th, 36 pts) 6 May: Wolves (20th, 22 pts) vs. Everton 13 May: Everton vs. Newcastle (6th, 47 pts) My take on the games: Everton should be strong favorites vs.: West Brom, Wolves Moderate favorites vs.: Sunderland, Fulham, Newcastle Slight underdogs vs.: Swansea, Norwich, Stoke Big underdogs vs.: Man United I'll be very disappointed if we don't take at least 16 points from those 9 matches.
Liverpool lose 2-1 to Wigan. Everton beat Swansea 2-0. Everton are now in the 9th, only 2 points behind Liverpool in the table. At this rate we could well finish above the Red Shiite in the final table! The last time we finished above Liverpool was in 2004-05, I believe. The season Liverpool somehow managed to convert a 5th place finish into a Champions League spot.
Liverpool lose 0-1 at Anfield to West Brom.. Coupled with Everton's dramatic 4-4 draw at Old Trafford, the Toffees remain in 7th place, and are 2 points above Liverpool and Fulham in the table. No doubt winning the FA Cup would boost "King Kenny"'s chances of staying in charge at Anfield. But with the Red Shite playing so poorly in the League, I suspect Dalglish might be gone at season's end no matter what happens at Wembley. As it stands now, it looks like Everton have a pretty good chance of finishing ahead of Liverpool in the League. Everton's final 4 matches: Fulham, at Stoke, at Wolves, Newcastle Livepool's final 4 matches: at Norwich, Fulham, Chelsea, at Swansea
Does that mean should Chelsea beat Real, and is the EPL fifth place team, there are some scenarios where the Toffees qualify for Europa League?
UEFA tightened up their rules after they let Liverpool slide into the Champion's League with a 5th place finish. If Chelsea manage to win the Champion's League, they'll earn a place in next season's Champions League, and if Newcastle, Spurs, or Arsenal finish 4th, they'll end up in the Europa League instead.
All in all I'd say this was a pretty good season for us. Season highlight: Coming back from 4-2 down to draw Man United 4-4. A match for the ages! Season lowlight: Our FA Cup loss to Liverpool. First game I've ever felt truly devastated afterwards. Players of the season: Jelavic, Pienaar, and Fellaini. Biggest surprise: Anichebe Biggest disappointment: Cahill
