Very interesting political-compass like test that gives you an idea of which European parties are closer to your views:

    http://www.euprofiler.eu

I'm firmly in the low-left quadrant. The party I'm closer to is the French NPA (which I would vote very happily if I could).

Interesting. I don't know a whole lot about the Euro parties other than the UK and the two biggest ones in Germany. Apparently I'm closest to the UK Independence Party, Die Republikaner (Germany), and Unia Polityki Realnej in Poland.

Well, you're politically closest to a party founded by a guy who volunteered for the SS and then famously claimed in his later years during an election campaign that "today Die Republikaner are treated like the Jews just before WWII".

    Well, my percentages:

    Germany: Left 84%, Greens 71%, SPD 52%... Die Republikaner got a whooping 0% :D.

The European party closest to me (of all countries) is the Swiss Green Party (89%), followed by the Catalan Green Party, the United Left of Spain, the Italian Partito della Rifondazione Comunista, the Swedish Pirate Party and a few others in the 80+ region.

I'm in the upper left quadrant completely in tune with the party I vote for in the NL (D66). I'm the least in tune with religious parties which is no surprise as even though I am a cultural catholic I am allergic to religion playing any part whatsoever in politics. I wonder how many people will actually turn up for these elections and then will subsequently complain about the lack of democracy in Europe.

This would worry me if "Do you support the mass murder of Jews?" had been one of the questions asked on the test

To be fair, they never wanted to murder anyone. And they even dropped the open racism sometime in the 1990s or so. These days it's the party for old middle class guys who want to party like it's 1914 again and are also of the opinion that brown people are kinda icky and shouldn't hang arround in Germany, but still think that beating them up would be somewhat uncultivated. They are best buddies with the Front National, Vlaams Belang and the FPÖ, although they aren't exactly in the same league as those success wise.

As always, my criticism of these surveys is that I like nuance, and these surveys tend to kick nuance to the curb.

That being said, the link said Labour was nearest to me in the United Kingdom, but my answers were a shadow just to the right of the Liberal Democrats. The nearest party to me in Europe was, depending on which button I clicked, either GroenLinks (probably because I was able to agree with environmental issues more readily instead of saying "Yes, but what exactly are we privatizing, and how?") or the Scottish National Party. Och, aye and hoots!

I'll try it again in the morning or over the weekend, take harder stands, and see where I wind up. But to me, being an LD fan is no surprise. If I'd grown up in the UK and undergone the political evolution I've gone through in the US of A, I would've gone from being a Margaret Thatcher fanboy to a Tony Blair fanboy to a Nicky Clegg fanboy. :)

So... The ideologically closest party to me according to this test is United Left, who I could vote but I'm actually not going to. Curious...

    1. Greens - 63.4%
    2. Lib Dems - 61.6%
    3. Labour - 59.2%
    4. Tories - 57.1%

I find it rather disheartening that I only agree with the two biggest parties on 60% of the issues.

Seems the parties I'm most agreeable with is the SPD in Germany, the Communist Party of the Portuguese Workers and Partij voor de Dieren which has a Cow as it's party logo.

My point was that, while it may be a racist party (I don't know anything about them), there weren't really any racial questions on the test so I landed near them as a result of their positions on other issues.

Oh, I actually understood that - and I didn't want to imply anything about your result. Well, I actually strongly oppose pretty much every position the party has, but no need to get into this here. Just wanted to mention the background of the party - my comments were caused by my distaste for the party and I didn't want to attack you or anything, sorry if that came off wrong.

I'm about 1/3 of the way to the left, and 1/3 of the way up.

    for the Czech Republic.

    CSSD- 79.3%
    EDS- 76.4%
    SZ- 74.2%

That's the Social Democrats, a new party called European Democrats, and the Greens.

In Europe I'm near a Latvian Party called "Harmony Centre" and the Portuguese Socialists Party.

Interesting, as an American living here I found it interesting to see where I fell on this spectrum though agree nuance is lost in these things

Here in Hungary I was MSZP but across Europe closest my views were to a Dutch party D66, Croatian Social libertarians and the Portuguese socialists
