hmm maybe but @ halftime I was thinking.. "this is like Poland vs. Czech Republic all over again"... host nation starting, creating chances but never really looking like scoring and England are better than CR. However, Ukraine to their credit did manage to keep the pressure. But it was a similar story, not enough conviction up front...
I would disagree. Ukraine looked better with Devic up front today than with Shevchenko. Today was not Ukraine's day. That's it.
Kudos to Blochin's team for this great fight and a good performance (being the better team, but that was to be expected due to the home support & the fact that they had to play for the win ... nevertheless, England was disappointing in many aspects in my eyes). That should make it easier for all Ukraine supporters to get over the early exit. Horrible performance by the referee's assistants (on the line & for the box), though. Not calling clear offsides ... and then even not seeing that the ball passed the goal line (despite having a good view from just 5 meters distance). So England got compensated for a similar scene just 2 years ago...
No, that was compensation for missing the offside that led to it. Compensation for 2 years ago is still outstanding, but will hopefully be repayed in full later on in the competition.
I'd take the 2 year ago goal and give Ukraine this goal any time! England would still probably have won the group.
As you have said, it should have been offside and so luck evened itself out already within the game. We are still waiting for the repayment. As it would be unfair on anyone else, it will have to be Germany, preferably this tournament. If we meet in the semi-finals, an early own goal would suffice. Please make it happen.
Shenchenko is the only Ukrainian to score in this tournament. Without him they'd have lost all three games and been eliminated after two. England were terrible, unable to defend, unable to create anything up front, unable to keep possession, the midfield unable to stop anyone going straight through them in two passes. Having said that, the Ukraine only created a couple of chances that were offside anyway, other than that they were reduced to shooting from distance.
Well, let's be honest: The not given goal from 2 years ago was undoubtedly compensation for the final 1966 ... so we are even with each other now! I think the Ukrainians would have put huge pressure on England and probably scored the winner in the end if they equalized quasi immediately after the unlucky 0:1. The question is whether France would have conceded the 2nd goal in that case (as they knew they would be out then)...
Thanks for your input - glad to see someone else has noticed you can't move for English fans shouting about how they're going to win the tournament
Oh wow! I did not know that the English fans were the first ones that shouted that their country would win a tournament, this is really strange as the fans of all other countries, including Greece, just go to the tournament to cheer Germany and shout how Germany will win.
If Buts Maybe's. If Lampards goal against Germany went in they could have won 5-2, who knows. Fact is Ukraine could quite easily have lost or drawn.
Germany wins 4:2 with MANY errors, your' Chelsea style' won't beat Germany again. Puleeeeese. I'm not fcking scared of wherever wins the IT/EN match
