There wasn't much depth in the 'golden generation'. The XI was great if you had everyone available but that wasn't ususally the case.
Maddison never really established himself enough to be dropped. He was in one squad, came on for some minutes, got knocked off the ball a few times and that was it.
I don't think he'll ever have an England career. Too many good players in his position. Its Shane he wasn't around 3 years ago
I disagree with you about dropping TAA wasn't a good move. Maybe it was the kick up the backside he needed. Remember he did it to Kyle Walker as well and now Walkers ahead of TAA in the pecking order.
Joe Cole was one of our most naturally gifted players ... he should have been the next Gazza but sadly he fell into the clutches of Jose who turned him into a workhorse wingback ... he probability expended more energy defending than he did attacking
England need a proven cup winner coach to progress. Deschamps had been to five finals x3 Coupe De France with Marseille and one with Monaco and the Porto UCL final where they were giant killers in unfavorable draws. He got to a Euro final and won the WC next . Del Bosque had won UCLs at Madrid before the World Cup and Euro wins. What I'm saying is a coach with proven tournament or cup experience is indispensable. England likes to hire English coaches which is what all NTs do. But they are shallow here compared to France, Germany, Spain and Italy. The solution after Southgate if the FA wants to be serious, has to be a non English coach. Just my two cents fellows.
The solution after Southgate probably does have to be someone other than Southgate, to be fair. Otherwise that's still Southgate.
This will take years. The best British managers in the EPL top ten are a certain Northern Ireland fellow who won the FA Cup and a Scot.
That pass from Phillips to Harrison is something else. If that was De Bruyne people wouldn’t stop talking about it..... #lufc pic.twitter.com/L795aNEtLN— BARNEY 🦚 (@BarneyLUFC21) May 15, 2021 Kalvin de Phillips

One of the best passes I’ve seen in some time ... impressive. I’d play him Instead of Rice every time
