I compared the first 9 weeks of games (start of season) to the last 9 weeks of games (after Covid break) in the 2019-2020 Bundesliga season to see what if any effects the increase of allowed substitutes per team from 3 to 5 had. In short, not much. Total goals: first 9 weeks = 252, last 9 weeks = 251 Total substitutes: first 9 weeks = 476, last 9 weeks = 697 Goals by substitutes: first 9 weeks = 29, last 9 weeks = 32 % of goals by substitutes: first 9 weeks = 11.5%, last 9 weeks = 12.7% Even though substitutes increased by 46%, goals scored by substitutes increased by only 10%. % offensive subs: first 9 weeks = 68.5%, last 9 weeks = 66.1% I admit classifying subs as offensive or defensive is a bit fuzzy, but I was consistent for both sets of games. % of goals scored after the scoring team substituted: first 9 weeks = 32.9%, last 9 weeks = 35.1% Average time of goals in game: first 9 weeks = 50.1 minutes, last 9 weeks = 48.5 minutes
