I'm new to the area, always been a big football supporter, and want to support Atlanta, which is my closest team. I know they were in USL (I think) and took some time off (for whatever reason) before joining NASL this year.

    What's their story?
    Who are their rivals?
    Derby games?
    Do people tailgate before games?
    Are there any big chants?
    Supporter groups?

I always support local teams, but always want to know the info before I start. So could someone please educate me on the Atlanta Silverbacks? Thanks.

Hi, I'm relatively new to the area as well, so don't know a lot about the team's history, but have been to their home games so far this season. They're a young team, still waiting for a win, but playing alright.

The main supporters group is Westside 109, they have an active facebook page. As the name suggests they sit at the front of section 109 in the stadium. I believe they tailgate, but we generally get there as the game starts so haven't partook of that yet.

I understand the Silverbacks used to have a rivalry with Carolina and Charleston (in the form of the Southern Derby Cup), but not sure if it's that fierce as S'backs have been out of league play for a couple of years.

I recommend going to watch them on Saturday against the Strikers. Get a seat in 109 and we can get some singing started!

I hope that answers some questions. PLEASE come support this team, they need more faithful followers!

The Chiefs were charter members of the NPSL in 1967, and of the NASL in 1968. They won the first NASL championship. That team lasted until 1972; they were sold and renamed the Apollos for 1973, and folded after the '73 season.

Chiefs v.2.0 were a re-brand of the Caribous of Colorado, who moved here in 1979. They lasted until 1981, when Ted Turner, needing $$$$ to start up what is now HLN, shut the team down.

ATLFireFan, it's not quite true that the Southern Derby now includes Carolina - it did for years, but last year when Charleston self-relegated and left Carolina as the only team in the south in D2, the Carolina supporters agreed that the cup would move down to USL-2 (now USL Pro) so that it could be a competition decided by more than a single friendly.

Us RailHawks fans still see this as a relevant local rivalry (though we no longer take it as seriously as our utter hatred of the Montreal Impact, or even the matchup between us and the Islanders - sorry, you're just not performing well enough to catch our attention very much this year), but the Southern Derby Cup is beneath us both these days.

Fun trivia fact: of all the teams that have ever competed in the Southern Derby, only one has never failed to win it - and you're playing them on Saturday.

I am from Massachusetts and a big soccer fan, I just got a new job opportunity that is bringing me to Atlanta. I think I may spring for season tix at the cheapest level this year. I am moving in the next two weeks. I love soccer at all levels, and I am huge on tailgating and can't wait to get involved. I was about to buy season tix to the Revs for the first time this year, but now it looks like ill be attending Silverbacks games. I also write US Open Cup articles for thecup.us on the side.

In addition to attending Silverbacks games, are there any soccer bars in Atlanta that have the MLS Direct Kick that I might be able to go and watch the Revs games at? Thank You.

Welcome to Atlanta, We share a common move, but in reverse. After years in Atlanta, I was given a job opportunity that I couldn't refuse in BOS. After four years I moved back in the spring of 2010. If you are going to buy season tickets and are the tailgating make noise type look at either section 109 or 309. I'm partial to 109. Some of us have been going to games together now for 13 seasons.

As for bars I know the Brewhouse @ little five points is a big meeting spot. I don't personally make it down there much. My weeknights end pretty early. They just rebranded their second pub in Avondale Estates to the same concept, so It might have games on also. There are some other bars, but they are out of my normal eastside sphere. ATL is a real big metro area, kind of like BOS.

Once again, welcome. Come look us up at the games. Both Westside109 and the Eastside 309 groups tailgate on the upper practice field before the games, usually 2 hours before first kick, some a bit earlier. Drive up and say Hey.

Thelincolnking, would you be interested in getting season tickets in 109 for 109? I worked the silverbacks ticket office to try and fill up the section. We need 10 people for the discount to work. We are up to 7 now. Would you be interested?

OK Im in. Where do I go to get the discount? Send me a link or is there a code I need to use on the phone? Can they just hold my tix at the office and I can come by and pick them up when I get there? I don't even have an Atlanta address yet.

They also have a reserve side that plays in the NPSL Southeast Division.

Hello everyone. I lived in Atlanta at one point in my young life. Since college I moved out to Seattle and supported a once hated Sounders team. I returned to Georgia to a Silverback team in the throws of losing everytime they stepped onto the pitch. But every once in a while driving home into the evening sun I'll catch a ray of sunshine just right and I'll remember the sound of the drums beating over a horrible rock (not gravel) parking lot. I'll remember the corn hole game pulled from the back of a Honda Element and Tecate on my parched lips. I'll remember the makeshift office building that served as a restroom before portapotties were gracing the stadium grounds. Every once a while while at my now local bar a chant of free beer free beer free beer free beer will burst forth from my loins before being escorted to the nearest exit. While listening to The Regular Guys on my drive to work I'll remember watching how creepy Southside Steve was as he lurked in the shadows around whatever soccer gal might have been separated from the group. I remember flip cup with a group of Charleston fans and not much after that. I remember sending a mildly tainted southern derby cup to Carolina and not minding much seeing it go. I would have never drank from it again anyway. Come to think of it ... I should probably just catch a game sometime since I'm back in town.

Seems as if a lot of new faces will be present.

Here's to hoping for a better season.

You know I have video of the flip cup match. Might be nice to post somewhere (except that I think we lost consistently). Leaving the stadium and walking across the boulder field you never knew when you would face plant. Free beer chant + boulder field equals random bruises.

I'm out of town on business this week, but I'll try and dig up some old footage this weekend. Embarrass the hell out of everyone, but possibly help them to remember the old days.

Also, I want to bring my wife and another couple to a Battery game and get access to the Three Lions Pub. How would I go about that?

Welcome Back. We've missed you. We have some new faces since you left us, but there are also some familiar ones. Tailgate starts at 3pm. Some place up on the hill.

I look forward to it Rutger. I'll have to check this first game out on UStream, but I told Nuthead I'll make it up to a few of the tailgates and matches.
