Sports events and concerts were popular back then. The Giants were doing the same sort of thing at Candlestick. I went to a SJS-Stanford football game in 1984 when they had the Beach Boys performing after the game (at Stanford of course). In addition to The Greg Kihn Band and The Tubes, the Quakes also had a night of country music after the game with Don Cox and the Cowtown Band. I remember Don Cox telling the crowd that he always thought soccer was boring but he was sure surprised at how exciting it was to be at the game (that was the great 1983 team).

Happy 75th birthday to Iran international Parviz Ghelichkhani, the 3-time Olympic Games defender -- only missing the 1978 FIFA World Cup in a protest against the Shah of Iran’s elitist regime -- who played 15 seasons with top domestic clubs like Kian (1962-68), Taj (1968-71), Oghab (1972-74) and Darei (1974-76), then jumped to the NASL in 1978 and made 16 appearances with the San Jose Earthquakes, and ultimately became a leading politician and publisher in self-imposed exile in France.

I was likely at that game. Looks like former Quake Mike Ivanow in goal for the Sounders for this game. Current Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer also suited up for the Sounders that year.
