Hopefully that helps you out. Any other Irish League clubs you are looking information about then just ask. And in relation to the 'Swifts' part of the name, it a commnly used team name, usually for younger teams - Linfield Swifts, Bangor Swifts etc. I'm not too sure why the Dungannon Senior team choose to use it.

Thanks for the help. From what I can tell a swift is a bird (maybe you already knew this but I'm not familiar with any bird in the States called a swift). Anyway, deduced that from the emblem and a little google work. Still haven't uncovered if there's any particularly interesting story behind it.

What is the origin of the name Glentoran?

Avoneil was the "premier" club in East Belfast in 1881 and was one of the first contestants in the first Irish Cup of that year, won by Moyola Park against Cliftonville by a goal to nil.
Two struggling junior sides, Oakfield and Nettlefield, held a meeting to decide their bleak future. The decision was that the two clubs could not continue and should disband. Victor Coates, the then president, intervened and decided to amalgamate the two clubs, based at Ormeau Park, and named them after his home on the Ravenhill road, Glentoran.
The exact date is not clear that this formation came into place but the club was officially registered with the Irish FA on November 7th 1882.

    I got this from

Dont hesitate to ask for anymore help!! Its no problem helping you!!

And a swift is a realy fast bird that resides in Ireland.

Thanks for all the info. I am always interested in learning about soccer in every country of the world. And, as you may have figured out, I am asking these questions in doing research for my website.

What about derbies? What are the main derbies in Northern Ireland.

    thanks

    Larne, N.Ireland
    linfield v glentoran
cliftonville v crusaders (except the crues got relegated last season)
    coleraine v ballymena
    glenavon v portadown

    they'd be the main derbies.
also larne v ballymena to a lesser degree

ps. a swift is like a (smaller?) swallow :)

    Armagh - Loughgall

Anyone know anything about the two Swifts players picked up by Armagh City?

you mean shane coney and conor forker? both are forwards. coney is strong and bustling, forker is fast.
forker is probably the more experienced of the 2.
coney scored their only goal when larne beat them last week. scissor kick from about 10 yards....good goal.

ps. you aren't "the doctor", a loughgall fan, by any chance?

Those are the forwards I'm curious about. Scissor goal for Coney, eh? Good deal!

No, I'm not a Loughgall supporter.

    Thanks for the info!

When any team form the same city plays is a derby.
