I get it. Can’t say I’m not bummed, just like Becks, but I get it. I really wanted him to be our Bobby Charlton
http://abc7.com/sports/ex-united-states-star-landon-donovan-no-more-playing-for-me/1816058/ EX-UNITED STATES STAR LANDON DONOVAN: 'NO MORE PLAYING FOR ME' Landon Donovan has closed the door on returning to soccer after briefly coming out of retirement last season. Speaking to Yahoo! Sportson Thursday, the United States' all-time leading scorer made it clear he had no intentions of returning to the field. "Yeah, I'm done," Donovan said. "I'm done. No more playing for me." "I have not [gone public]. But that is definitely the case." Donovan, 34, came out of retirement toward the end of the 2016 campaign to play for the LA Galaxy following what turned out to be a season-ending injury to Gyasi Zardes. He scored one goal in nine appearances. But just weeks after the end of the Galaxy's season, team president Chris Klein stated that Donovan wouldn't be returning to the team. In January, Donovan declined an offer to play for Real Salt Lake this season, multiple sources told ESPN FC. Donovan recorded 160 goals and provided 151 assists in 384 league and playoff appearances over his sterling MLS career. He scored 57 times while adding 57 assists in 157 appearances for the U.S.

sorry for the stupid repeat post. (don't care what Spectrum says - their internet service is the suck)
Congrats to Landon on the birth of his second child as well. Hoping one of those kids suits up for the National Team.
I'm posting the link so as not to derail the WC thread. Landon talks about El Tri support with local San Diego radio (about first 5-7 minutes).
What a joke. I guess he does not know how Mexican s feel abt him or US soccer . Self centered and a lil ignorant . Then throws politcs into it saying how people are treated..very well I think. Free school free basic medical, college grants, assisted living, social services etc that's why people come by the millions. Sorry LD u wrong.
I'm a huge, huge, huge Donovan fan. But I agree with you. Attacking Bocanegra is simply wrong. I just don't buy the "grew up playing with Mexicans" reasoning. It does not make any sense to me. By WC2026, CONCACAF will be represented by 6 teams, so I don't buy the "more slot allocation for CONCACAF if Mexico does well" reasoning either. And to say that Mexicans are mistreated is, like you said, simply not true. It's the other way around, here in California.
I didn't read it as an attack - he was responding to Bocanegra's tweet. But, whatever, I do understand that rivalries are serious, just for me I really enjoyed rooting for Mexico against Germany!! My husband, however, wishes them nothing but ill fortune. Another thing on the Wells Fargo / Donovan / Mexico campaign, not sure they thought it through. There was definitely going to be some pushback and skepticism or downright hostility, and certainly LD has dealt with that before. There should have been some humorous comebacks ready to go, and keep up the fun, keep it light. Understand and agree with the need to support our Mexican brothers and sisters in this political climate, so it's risky no matter how you look at it. That's another thing I admire about the campaign, is it takes a risk, and for something potentially important. Whether you all or me or anyone roots for the Mexican national team is definitely not important, however! It's sports, whatever floats your boat, within reason, of course.
I feel like a better version of me would root for Mexico (maybe one that didn't have to watch JK manage the US), and I appreciate that I have many friends who do support them, so I try not to wish any specific ill-will on them, but ... I want them to do well to represent CONCACAF but not too well ... and I'd love to see the Dos Santos brothers get some mojo going as it could help the Galaxy, and in today's climate where there's lots of instances of ugly close-minded xenophobia I do appreciate Donovan's report with Mexican soccer fans, but I think the best I can do is watch and appreciate good soccer plays.
My first intro to the game was through Mexicans and El Salvadorans I grew up with around LA, so I can relate to LD's sentiment in that respect. Mexicans have a passion for the game that is rare to come by in the US and their NT has a distinctive culture and style of play they commit to, even against strong opponents which I respect tremendously. Because of that, I never had the bitter antipathy for the Mexican NT or LigaMX that some have, despite the rivalry. I have also noticed a tendency for the rivalry to be racialized in a disturbing way at times, especially recently with the fight over dual nationals ramping up (though not everyone does that, of course). I think Americans can be a little blind to the political aspect of international soccer, since our sports are supposed to be politics-free spaces (which is not actually true in practice, really) -- but of course it is possible to hate the Mex NT and not hate Mexican people. Certainly no one should feel obligated to support Mexico on those grounds.
Raised in SoCal, love my Mexicans, even love talking this specific World Cup with them, but hate el tri and wish nothing but pain on them and I hope LD (the best US player in modern history) at least got paid for selling out. There would be a huge outcry if Pele wore an Argentina shirt or Maradona wore a Brazil shirt. Why is this different?
