That said, the link you cited provides a strong justification for the establishment of a clerical class among sunnis. However, doctrinally, sunni Islam has generally taken a view that is more akin to what you have among protestants, without a real clerical class and holding that the scripture is what needs to be followed. Any interpretations required, moreover, is generally referred to rather ancient sources and very little room is provided in most sunni doctrines for innovative thought.
