I’m less worried about that as it’s not as if many of the successful international coaches had a track record before their current gigs. The important things to me are 1) does their style of play fit our player pool, and 2) what is their track record of doing more with less and over performing relative to their talent level.
A lot of talk about Herve Renard on Twitter: Hervé Renard is the obvious choice. Tons of international experience. Has done more (results) with less (poor player pool). Knows how to motivate the group. His contract is up in August. My question is who else? Renard isn’t a guarantee. So who else can lead the USMNT? pic.twitter.com/WmZA8JYnj5— Kranks (@dis_possessed) July 11, 2024
Renard makes sense. What I haven’t seen mentioned is this isn’t a full cycle with qualifying, where there is more opportunity for growth and experience and/or success vs CCAF comes into play. This next 20 months is almost solely aimed at global competition in the WC. So experience against global competition and various styles is of great importance. Someone who has been to the WC multiple times brings extreme value. The above is why I’d be extremely hesitant to hire Chero and think a full cycle with qualifying would be much better for him or someone like him.
I think the new coach should be familiar with the American player pool. And speak English. And if he were rrelated to an American soccer honcho, that would be great.
Have the people throwing around Wilfried Nancy’s name as a consideration for the USMNT job ever listened to the man????? pic.twitter.com/9s4kE4KZSV— GCGBAG ☆☆☆ (@gcgbag96) July 11, 2024 I don’t mind any of Renard, Nancy and Vieira as candidates, but why do we have so many French guys on the list. I don’t love the French, I must say.
Most impressive on Herve Renard’s resume is winning AFCON with Zambia, a huge underdog. And qualifying Morocco for the 2018 World Cup, when they had not qualified for many years. Renard recruited a lot of dual nats to that team, which became the basis of the 2022 semifinal team. He also won the AFCON with the Ivory Coast.
Well, French coaching must be doing something right since they have produced arguably the best player pools over the last couple of decades and have been the most successful national team with 4 World Cup final appearances in that time.
how about jogi low? according to the internet he is "interested" in getting back into national team management. what better "project" than working with the usmnt's potential?
I think it's actually fairly simple, I do agree with most of what's been posted. for me: 1. A coach with the ability to be flexible. Take a look at what the pool offers and utilize them in a system to best match their abilities. 2. A Coach who is He was pretty good in Game of Thrones.
It is funny he's never mentioned. His team was young and played hard on the front foot. He won a WC. Yet his name never comes up. Too long out of it?
Most recent article I have seen on Low, here's some out takes: Reflecting on his extensive travels as Bundestrainer scouting players across Germany, Low spoke about seeking a "fitting challenge" for his next assignment. Expressing excitement about the prospect of the 2026 World Cup in North America, he stated, "I've travelled through this country for 17 years, been to all kinds of stadiums, and know the clubs very well." With a clear vision for the future, Joachim Low remains focused on potential challenges, setting his sights on the 2026 World Cup as he distances himself from club management opportunities. https://www.planetsport.com/soccer/news/joachim-low-shuts-down-bayern-munich-coaching-links
History would indicate that’s not really a high bar, or even a thing. You’ve got roughly a month with the players before the WC. If you can’t install a system in a month, either your system is too complicated, or you shouldn’t be a coach. Coaches do this all the time in preseason. Coaches take over mid season and get the “new manager bump”. I do think that knock out tournament and league matches are a different animal. In general, I feel there are certain coaches that are great / better in cup competitions. Classic examples are Rafa Benitez and Unai Emery.
Probably the booger eating. In all seriousness, that was so gross lol. But really he is a great coach with a proven track record at the international level and seems to be a great fit. He'd definitely be in my top 3 of candidates to take the job Zidane Low Renard Then you get into the next tier Poch Sergio Conceicao Moyes Kovac Allegri Then come the next wave where you find a mix of younger and up and comers, you hope it doesn't get here this cycle (Dolo and managers like that). Or you never know they may go old and out of the game but has the titles to show for it. I think Di Zerbi would've been great but he was hired. Interesting next few weeks but next guy has to be better.
After being coached by their buddy Gregg, I wonder how the player pool would react to this: Hervé Renard's halftime speech during Saudi Arabia's matchup with Argentina will have anyone ready to take on the best player in the world 😤 pic.twitter.com/StTXR0vehM— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) November 26, 2022
Yea I know, suburban Paris produces the best players in the world. It’s amazing. I’m just saying…. I was in France recently and boy, I was really really tired of French people on about the 5th day. That’s all I’m saying. French people man… These fanboy nerds would be begging for Gregg to come back and give them a power point.
I came to the same conclusion. Spain has looked to be on another level from all the games I’ve watched this summer, both Euros and Copa America.
And note that the Spanish coach is somebody who came up through the ranks managing their youth teams and has never managed a club team. So maybe the best American candidate would be someone like Tab Ramos, not any of the MLS guys.
Phil Jackson just get someone in who knows how to win and doesn't give a flip about ego's and who's family has prestige in the program or not.
Phil Jackson doesn't coach the US. Phil finds the most talented teams in the world and coaches there.
