The US U-20s lost their first game of the tournament 2-1 against Brasil. The US took the lead in the second half when down to 10 men and were dangerous throughout. But Brasil was able to come back and win. Devin played the whole game and was the captain. http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=20931&itype= Today the U-20s beat Italy 2-1 with goals from Eddie Johnson and Devin. No link for this game yet. We play Ukraine on Thursday.
Why does he play so goo with the Nats and he can't show his skills here? I love him to death, but I want SJ to see what he can do!
because he's playing with the U-20 Nats team, and not the Champs of the MLS....or against other great MLS teams, and players.....
We follow all the youth teams as much as possible on the Youth Nats board. This team is one in particular because it will be the core of the U-23s for the Olympics in 04. Unfortunately nobody can watch these games; the only info. we get is from US Soccer.
Re: Re: Devin in Spain I'm not so sure it's the standards of the players or the league he's playing in. I just think there is different chemistry on different teams. Maybe Devin is just better able to play with the nats cuz he feels more comfortable with that team. Another thing, I don't see Devin as a great midfielder. I think he's more of a pure forward. I'd rather see him get more time with the Quakes in that role. But Franky seems to prefer him in the midfield. I just think Devin would do much better up front. I just can't put my finger on it. But from what I've seen of Devin, he hasn't yet quite meshed with this team. He just has a much different attitude towards things. It almost seems to me like he doesn't want to be here. But that's just my observation.
Re: Re: Re: Devin in Spain I'm not sure if FY prefers him in midfield or if he puts him there because the Quakes already have 3 good strikers.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Devin in Spain Well, I'd rather see Lucci play in midfield than Devin. It's not like he doesn't have other options for midfield. But you're right. It raises the question of who he would replace. And, really, this season, he isn't needed at the forward spot. But he'll get his chance.
Re: Re: Re: Devin in Spain Rongen (coach of this team) thinks Devin is better suited as a midfielder and that's where he has played him. I think Frank agrees with this also. He's better with the ball at his feet coming in from wide taking defenders on than with his back to the goal as a forward.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Devin in Spain HAHA!! Maybe for them. But definitely not for the Quakes. So then it's not the position that makes the difference I guess. Devin has stunk up the midfield with the Quakes.
The U-20s beat Ukraine today 5-2. Devin was rested for the game. They play Uruguay in the semi-final game tomorrow.
Barclay looks more comfortable up front than in the middle. His positioning and running appears to be much better than when he is on the right. I guess Yallop and Rongen see something we don't see with him there. Good to see the great result. I couldn't find a bio for Magee, can anyone find one? He's definitely not with a MLS team, and I don't think he has signed with any other Pro team.
Magee is 17 and has practised extensively with the Fire as he is from the Chicago area and played on the same youth team as Bob Bradley's son. BTW, Bradley's son is now in Bradenton in residency. MLS has been trying to sign him to a P-40 but he wants to play abroad. In the past year he has trained in Norway and with Ajax (who wanted to sign him but could only sign him for the youth squad as he is under 18, while he doesn't want to be on a youth squad) and has recently been in Sweden (IIRC). Once he turns 18 I'm sure he'll be signing in Europe.
The U-20s beat Uruguay 3-1 today to advance to the final of the tournament against either Brasil or Costa Rica. Devin was again the captain but was ejected in the 52nd minute. No report on if it was a red or 2 yellows yet. http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=21106&itype=
Here's a pic of Devin from today's game: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/020828/168/24t8g.html
two yellows is what I read. devin's captain of this squad, right? question: as i haven't seen him play much (one token appearence against DC) I was wondering where everybody feels he'll eventually fit in best with the Quakes, who his game will mesh with best and all of that fun stuff. thanks in advance.
Unfortunately, the U.S. lost the final to Brazil 1-0 on a 9th minute goal. Devin was out with a suspension. Here's the short version from ussoccer.com: http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=21187&itype=
