wow i wonder what could have been if Donovan was more highly visualized back then by Bruce, and if Landon would have gone in instead of Wolff or Mathis...who knows lol and who cares lol

Mexican legends Pavel Pardo (Stuttgart) and Rafael (Rafa) Marquez (Barcelona) will likely lead their team into battle on February 11th.
Donovan, a benchwarmer in '01, will work his magic. Perhaps, Hejduk will make the scene. I expect he will.

Does "make the scene" mean start? Let's hope not. He's fine on the bench or as a last-minute, lead-protecting sub, but hopefully the U.S. has available more skilled players than he.

At the time Landon was 18 years old, had only 2 or 3 caps, and had never played a first division club match.

I'll still never understand how that prick Marquez didn't get a direct red for that cheap shot on McBride.

Love it. Especially loved the Mexican "ardido" after the game. Hope to see more of that this time around.

From watching the highlight video posted here and elsewhere, the incident that injured McBride in this game was not a dirty play. Marquez and McBride both went up for a head ball and their heads knocked. The side of Brian's head hit the back of Marquez's head.

Marquez has had his share of questionable incidents, but this was not one of them. He may have deserved a red for his shot at Wolff that earned him a yellow. That was pretty bad.

Then of course you had El Matador's cheap shot on Sanneh (who played a monster game that night) right at the death...

(At least I think it was Luis...my eyelids were frozen open by that time as I recall...) :)

I remember Mathis and Wolff being supreme in that game. That was when Mathis was at his heights as a player coming off a magnificent 2000 with the Metrostars. Shortly after he got that injury and was never the same again (even if he did have some good moments e.g. goal against Korea). I have it on dvd, I'll have to break it out in the lead up to the next game.

Watching the video, one of the things that really stands out is how much hair Friedel has!

Only guys (for us) who are still playing well are:

    1) Friedel (retired from international play, even money with Howard if he wanted to play)
    2) Hejduk (probably still makes the roster behind Cherundolo)
    3) Donovan (the man now, just a boy then).
    4) McBride (retired from international play, still going in MLS)
    5) Mathis (barely still going in MLS)

And for those who wonder what would have happened if Donovan had started? Well, we very well could have had 2 less goals, as Wolff had a goal and nice assist on the capper.

Man, Clint was so talented. I'm getting flashbacks to the two goals vs. Germany, thinking he was going to be a world beater. Too bad.

Great find, and I think I still have a DVD-R copy of the match somewhere in my video vault.

I think I'll watch it today.

About two months to go, and counting...

Thanks for the memories....the 2005 version was just as good of a match. I can't wait to attend the 2009 La Guerra Fria.

Mathis had so much potential, what happened? He is still a quality player but many people thought he would push his career further than it has gone.

Hope to meet some of you from around the country on Feb. 11 in Columbus.

I'm incredulous that David Regis was still in the mix in '01, let alone starting that match. Then I look him up on Wikipedia and found that he was on the '02 WC roster. God, it's so easy to block bad memories out, isn't it?

Regis was a regular starter until just (a month or so?) before the 2002 WC....IIRC he didn't start much after his screw-up against Italy (a foul by Del Piero against him that wasn't called actually...but he shouldn't have been screwing around with the ball and putting himself in that position in the first place) that gifted them their lone goal in the 2002 friendly.
