First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to the entire DCU family ! And apologies if this has already posted- I made a quick scan for it, but didn't see anything. I checked the Fox Sports World website today and saw that DC United almost broke the top 25 clubs in the world, in the latest list posted Nov. 18th. I look at this list occasionally, and have been waiting for recognition from them of what we all know here, that DCU is a world-class team ! http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3042884 This, to me, is yet another thing we all have to be thankful for - we really have returned to our rightful place (almost, that is - I think we might even rank a little higher )!
Interesting. Since Leverkusen is ranked below United, Donovan had to go to a lesser team in order to play some of the teams above us in the rankings. Too bad we don't get the chance to play them.
Pretty cool! One thing though, Boca juniors above United? Hasnt United pretty well handed Jrs thier hats over the years? Mark
The only match I remember playing against Boca was a 0-0 draw a couple years back. IIRC, a Boca player was sent off -- one yellow for diving, another for not leaving the field after an injury. Neither team played with any desire, as it was as an afternoon match in July or August and hot as hell. Not a great way to spend $25, but so be it.
Leverkusen is #33? When I read about Donovan going to Europe it said they were 5-5-4 nd ranked 11th out of the 18 German Bundesliga teams. Do these rankings have to be taken with a grain of salt?
Well, probably. I seriously doubt that our payroll is anywhere near 26th in the world and that, in of itself, says something. But, it is a very cool fantasy and, if FSW says it is so, we can brag about it. Hope that management sets up another exhibition match with a mid to low level EPL team next year at RFK. Wahoo!
FSW always puts the MLS champion as a token ranking around this time of year. Don't read too much into it at all.
I agree, LA was ranked in the top 20 a couple of years ago after they won. It's not a very good list.
"How many trophies have you won, Metros, Metros? How many trophies have you won? NOT A G@D D^MNED ONE!!!!!"""
For those of you that didn't know, Columbus was ranked in the top 30 before the postseason began and the Crew Board made a huge deal out of it. It also led to one of the more entertaining threads about Scandinavian culture, but I digress.
Well, Leverkusen have done well in Champions Leage, tying Real Madrid in Madrid and pounding them in Germany. Damn, I wish WE could play in Champions League FC Joe Public, here we come!
No kidding. I want to hear Tommy Smyth talk about Jaime or Esky putting the bulge in the ol' onion-bag.
Concur with the "take this for what it's worth" comment but this list makes DCU #1 in CONCACAF and #4 in Western Hemisphere (assuming I counted right). Too bad CONCACAF tourney happens during preseason!!
These rankings lists always throw a few gestures at North American and sometimes even Asian clubs when they do particularly well in their league. I'm not sure what the voting is like or how it works, but it seems a way to suggest that the rankings lists aren't entirely biased toward European and South American soccer (which they are, and probably rightly so). What it means, who can say, but it's nice enough to see DC being the side that's getting the props in the last installment, anyway.
