Maybe he thought the team was getting ready to move to Philadelphia. Of course, nobody at Big Soccer would believe that but the mayor doesn't hang out on too many soccer boards. In any event, the timing of this announcement is a little suspicious coming right after the Philly approval.

    Aviso:

I'm still kinda looking for confirmation on this. If there's a press conference tomorrow, chances are more outlets than just Channel 4 would be in on it. So I want to see another media outlet report it just to be sure.

How can a stadium generate revenue when it hasn't opened yet?

And wasn't the team's owner supposed to pay for the stadium itself?
The article says the city of DC is paying for the whole thing.

Oh yeah... WAY TO GO DC UNITED!!

It still has to get approved. When it does, I'll celebrate, that'll be a great day for the league.

It should be extremely accessable by rail, bus and boat, if all of the plans we've seen come to fruition.

BTW, this isn't as clear as it seeems. The NBC4 report says the city will kick in $200 million AND additional money for infrastructure. I'm not really sure how that's going to work as one of the main selling features of the DCU plan is that the team paid for the stadium and the taxpayer only kicked in for necessary infrastructure, which had to be built, stadium or no.

    great news!

like stan though, i'm also hoping to see some official confirmation of these.

also, i think they most likely have the who pays what part of it muddled up a bit.

The great support of DCU will be rewarded with a spectacular stadium it appears. Congrats on the approval. Can't wait until an official announcement. The organization, supporters, citizens, and players have earned it. It couldn't be happier for DC. Actually I could, when my Crew take points off you at home! ;)

    Sachin and Jade,

I am still confused. As another person has already posted, is DC United going to pay for the stadium or is DC going to do that?

It seems suspicious to see DC would do that? Why are they being so nice already?

    When conformation comes, celebration proceeds.

Re: DC United Stadium Plan Gets Go Ahead from Mayor

Another Washington DC TV station is reporting that the proposal is to lease 11 acres of Poplar Point's 110 to DC United to build a stadium, with the rest going to Clark Construction for their development.

Of interest is that Victor MacFarlane, one of United's owners, is in a business venture with Clark Construction already. So who knows how this thing will play out. MacFarlane is the investment advisor for CALPers, so has the ability to steer mucho bucks into projects that offer good return.

Maybe this is one of those.

theres 2 stories out there from 2 different news channels, 1 says dc is paying, the other says the city.....my guess is wait and see and dont get to happy yet, weve seen this before.

plus no ground breaking prolly till at least 2010 if it did happen due to all the environmental crap
