Just something I've always been curious about.. Whats the culture like & stereotypes of those who support each club. Anyone I've ever asked in person never really had too much of answer except for America (lol), so I figured this would be a good place to ask as the Apertura kicks off! You can speak for your club or others. (Rayados & Pumas are two specific clubs I'd like to hear, but I'd like to have a good idea of all the mainstays.)
Cruz azul fans are noodle arm weenies with dolphin titties >_>.....look at @El_Huero Took him under my wing and he still turned out a bust <_<
wilas are like the nads trying to absorbs "dat grit" from every club to feel prestigious and shit...like brehzix...claiming shit he hasn't done like porkin a gordiguap at a library....where he works (stalks)... @Soyrizo I suggest you stick around and follow the thread, LigaBancomerMX 2014 | Apertura to understand the Mx club culture better...
Something like this America-Rich kid in the block. Chivas-The whole only fielding mexican players makes them something like the peoples club Cruz Azul- The working class club. It was founded by workers of a cement company Pumas-The University affiliation makes it the cool hip club. Its fans tend to be the best of the best srs Monterrey- New money from the north Santos- Like Monterrey they are new money Tigres-Similar to Pumas with the university affiliation Atlas-Like the chicago cubs only no one outside of a few in guadalajara care about them. Leon- One of the historic teams of the league but fell on hard times but now is back Toluca- Don't really no what to make of them. very successful team but most people are indifferent towards them. something like the san antonio spurs Pachuca-Oldest club but have been relevant for much of its history. Only in the last decades have they become a player.
More specifically on Pumas When they first were formed they competed as being 100% part of the University. After a while the budget was becoming too much for the university so it was taken over by a group of people (ithink) I've heard that they got their colors from Notre Dame cause back then American football was very popular and they had coaches of ND come down to do camps during the american football season they share the same stadium Traditionally the team is known for playing a dynamic brand of soccer and by fielding young players. Some of the most iconic players in Mexico have come from there. One of the first things that attract people to it is its big logo It was designed by some guy name pajarito. The middle part of the Puma is a U for University 1st logo 2nd logo While no longer owned by the university, they play their games in the campus of unam. Hence they sing the anthem before every home game Pumas also has a distinct chant the Goya one. From what i know it came from way back in the day students would skip class to go to a movie theatre named Goya. So they would yell out goya goya to let students know that they were going to the movies.
Do politics play a part in fan bases? or are most teams apolitical? (as you notice in MLS stands, you will see much more anti-discrimination flags in Portland) Atlas, Pumas and Pachucha are known for best academies, correct?
Xolos Newly founded, recent title and promotion. Laughed at for having Narco connections via slimey owner. Santos Always in the playoffs, great fans. Strong following. Atlas, like Washa said, they're the cubs, but poorer. They spit out and develop great players though. Toluca ...the boring team that wins all the time. Poor fan following. Tigres Rich club, boneheaded management. They produce zero players and bandaid fix their problems by bringing in expensive talent, which never works out for them. University aura as well. Strong following. Monterrey Rich club with great players. Usually a force to be reckoned with. Strong following. Queretaro Relegation battle every year. Minnows, but strong local following. Pachuca Great management team. Develop and sell players abroad. Bring in great talent as well. A poor mans Porto in terms of scouting and selling. Recently sold Enner Valencia for 24 million usd. Chivas The most popular team in Mexico, or arguably is. Only Mexicans can play on the team. You cant go anywhere a strong congregation of Mexicans reside without seeing a chivas jersey at least once. Provide lots of players for national team. America, Richest club in the league. The madrid, or Chelsea of the league. Develops talent and buys expensive talent. Provides lots of players for the national team. Also the most popular team, arguably. Cruz Azul Big team, big following, decent success, but seen as losers for always coming in second. The Netherlands of the league. Leon Historic team back and here to stay. Strong investors. The richest man in the world has shares part ownership. Veracruz Minnows, constantly being relegated. Lots of buying their way in back to the first division fishy sh1t going on. Chiapas Poor and uninteresting team. The Bengals or Browns of the league. Pumas... See Washateros post. Best logo hands down, best uniforms as well. Provide lots of players to the national team (except this wc cycle). Morelia Mid tier club, kind of boring. The Minnesota twins. Puebla Poor and minnow status. Ugly uniforms, ugly stadium, ugly football. Leones Negros Newly arrived to first division. New kids on the block, but otherwise dont know a damn thing about them.
This would be best answered by those who actually live in Mexico. But as far as I'm concerned, the clubs are publicly apolitical. The stuff about Portland is interesting, and respect to the club if they are standing by the fans with the flags.
I'm originally from San Diego but moved to Leon about 4 years ago to study, when Leon was still in the second division. Ever since Leon got back into the first division, the fan base has been ridiculous. Ridiculous in a good way, people here are die-hard fanatics. Being from san Diego I root for Xolos and have been to a couple Xolos games, but man , Leon games are just 100000x funner because their fan base. They are really really loyal and most games get full or nearly full. I've also seen America @ the Azteca (wasnt impressed) and Pumas game @unam (also has some great fans). I'm not much of a Mexican league follower but I've been really really impressed with Leon, they will definitely be here to stay.
I don't think politics play much of a part in Mexican fut Unlike south america and other parts where a club president is elected and you have socios, mexican teams (other than atlas.. although i dont know if that is still the case) are ran like american sport teams in that they are owned by a single owner so you are not really likely to see a team identify itself with a political ideology Although you do see things like anarchist flags and che banners but thats all just for show
Mexican clubs are apolitical. I'll just talk about some clubs that share cities, who are usually the ones that "fill" a stereotype: Mexico City: Pumas - The club of the "intellectuals". Cruz Azul - The working class club. America - The preppy club. Atlante was originally the people's club in Mexico City, but nowadays all those 3 clubs share a pretty similar fan base. Monterrey: CF Monterrey: The original club, started with humble beginings, but since I can recall they're mostly associated with the local regio high class (because they play on El Tec, even if not associated with the ITESM). Tigres UANL: The people's club. Again, in reality, both have pretty similar fan bases. Guadalajara: In Jalisco, CD Guadalajara & Atlas are like the Man U & City before the Blues became rich. Coincidentally, now Atlas is rich as well. Atlas is usually seen as the most popular team in Guadalajara. Leones Negros: While they started as the people's club in Jalisco, the current reborn is mostly the hipsters' club.
"Atlas is usually seen as the most popular team in Guadalajara." lol what? Chivas - The winningest and most popular team in the country. Was named the most valuable club in the Americas even though currently going through tough times. Official supplier of the Mexican National Team since 1906.
I never said CD Guadalajara is not the (arguably) most popular club in Mexico, but in Guadalajara and Jalisco in general, Atlas has more fans, or at least, that's the stereotype in Mexico and what I have heard from tapatios themselves, both chivas and atlistas.
lol puras putas mentiras. "Official supplier of the Mexican National Team since 1906" more like Official supplier of the Mexican National Team from 2002 to 2006, you know the lavolpe era.
funny how the closest we got to a quinto partido in a mundial was when there wasnt a chivas player in the team..
There was one through technicalities....but jussayin...the second one hit the field....that was the only game we lost >_>
not one chiva in the 1930 WC squad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 3 in 1950 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 2 in 54 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 6 in 58 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 7 in 62 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1962_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 4 in 66 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 2 in 1970 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 2 in 78 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 1 in 86 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 2 in 1994 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 4 in 98 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 2 in 2002 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 6 in 2006 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 4 in 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup_squads 0 in 2014 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_squads You guys were "the supplier" during the chumpionisimo era and the lavolpe era thats it. Also checking them groups from way back then, damn no wonder Mexico(chile 62 Czechoslovakia, Brazil and Spain ufff) had a hard time winning games, the world cup back then was 16 teams it was basically the round of sixteen of today spread into groups. The one relatively easy group was in 1978(aside from 1970) and we did blew it like we do.
