    @Tropeiro

    Age 33 years old

    January 21st- March 23rd 2018

    23 goals+4 assists in 12 matches

    Whoscored Rating:8.93

This is from the real betis encounter(Feb 18th)

His legendary run included only 3 penalties

On April 3rd 2018 (not even 2 weeks later) was this
    gettyimages-941520068.jpg

The 96th minute injury time winner vs Juventus 2 weeks after this

The hattrick vs Spain a few months later

Maybe the most underrated period of his entire career was late January--December 2018
He was an elite player for large swathes of that period

The last time we had a 'peak' Ronaldo

Of course someone can point to his low points(the SF and final of the CL,the World cup R16 vs Uruguay)

It's not a perfect year but in reality whoever had one?
Few few players in all honesty

People tend to underlook even the first half of 18/19(after a relatively slow start he went back to doing 'Ronaldo things')

    October 2018

    Monster

In November the world class volley vs Manchester United in the unexpected groupstage loss

And outside of goals he was improving the level of his team significantly
    https://www.statsperform.com/resource/the-ronaldo-effect

Without being as physically imposing as in in 2011(one of his best ever years) id argue he was just as good if not better
Mentally stronger for sure with also much better decision making

    Peak calender years of CR7
    2014
    2011=2018
    2010
    2013

The 2nd half of 2008 and 2012 was at a basic world class standard

Peak of Cristiano Ronaldo for you @carlitos86 (no whoscored method now) what time Cristiano Ronaldo had more ability to impact a difficult game in your opinion... more ability to win the game on his own.

    2006-7, 2007-8 and 2008-9 (22-24 yo)
    or
    or 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 (25-27 yo)
    or
    2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 (28-30yo)
    or
    2015-2016 till now...

"By himself" restricts this to dribbling ability and peak athleticism which would be from 2009-2014 clearly IMO

2009/10 being his most optimum version
Id say from February to May 2010(specifically)he was on a completely different level playing field to 99.999% of players I've seen

    Something like
18 goals(9 wide assists) in his last 18 la liga matches
    3.5 dribbles per match
    2.7 key pass per match
    40 passes avg per match
Incredible scenes of skill and ball carrying
Technically his peak(as in hes arguably never been better)

Here's some opta data you might like
    VP-TABLE-RONALDO-2006-v2 (1).jpg

    2005/06 PL
    4.2 dribbles completed per 90

    2006/07 PL
    2.7 dribbles completed per 90

    2007/08 PL
    2.95 dribbles completed per 90
It was a different era and league not conducive to flair type players
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/22253531
    https://www.premierleague.com/news/1656724

In brief the high points are

    2006/07 CL
    4.4 dribbles per 90

    2005/06 PL
    4.2 dribbles per 90

    2009/10 la liga
    3.3 dribbles per 90

You will find his marquee dribbling performances and best solo goals in those campaigns

2005/06 is one to look at(underrated?)particularly the 2nd half where he achieved a level of continuity expected of a world class performer

At his best in 05/06 he was a genius capable of doing 'Maradona things'
These are ones I could think off the top of my head

    Left foot

    0:46

For a different type of player(his peak mentality and decision making)

    2016-2018
    the guarantor of victory

There is even a rebound assist transfermarket missed in the match vs real betis

    18/02/2018

    0.31

That's 31 direct goal involvements in 13 matches

A complete outlier in his career

Arguably more impressive as the first half of 2014/15 considering the level of opposition(played twice vs PSG,juventus,3rd place Valencia)

The highest peak anyone reached over a period of 6 or more matches in 2018 was Neymar Jr(January-feb)

This was a exemplary season with exceptional statistics playing in a notoriously defensive era

If Maradona ever exhibited such profound dominance at club level in a single season (at all levels inc league and European competions) Dearman would create a new category called 'supreme phenomenon class'

Instead CR is designated 'ordinary world class'

There is nothing remotely ordinary about this

    Peak goalscoring Cristiano Ronaldo

    2014 la liga (calender year)
    38 goals+16 assists in 2380 minutes(26.4 matches)

2.04 goals+assists per 90 for the duration of a calendar year
    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spi...ausrichtung=alle&land_id=0&compFilter=&plus=1
    Whoscored rating:8.79

This was his best calender year in a league format without a doubt IMO

Some other notable legendary bouts of form

    21st January 2018 - 3rd of April 2018

    25 goals+5 assists in 1150 minutes(13~ matches)

    2.3 goals+ assists per 90 with only 3 penalties

    Whoscored rating
    9.01

The rating for the egypt match is missing(don't think whoscored collects info on international friendlies in their database otherwise it would likely be higher than this-all indications point towards him being MOTM)

I like also his form between February-May 2010
Solo goals vs osasuna, almeria and mallorca
Elite dribbling, very participative in his teams build-up(upwards of 40 passes per 90 and well over 2 key passes)
Some nice freekicks and probably he was the most direct dribbling outlet seen in Europe since Ronaldo de lima 1996/97

    Games were being decided singlehandedly

Even in matches where the overall level of his team was well beneath his own

the ball carrying/off the ball work was immense
    He was literally a livewire

Its actually ironic this because Lionel messi himself has arguably never been better than he was in the last few months of 2009/10

    4 goals vs arsenal
Also striking back to back hattricks vs Valencia and real zaragoza(that ridiculous goal where he beat 3 players)

Both Cristiano(when fit) and Lionel messi demonstrated in the same campaign a level comparable to Ronaldo de lima 1996/97

This Messi 2009/10 comp is unreal
Id go as far as saying it is one of the most underrated seasons of all time

These 2 are slightly beneath and comparable

And of course Messi improved on this year on year while Cristiano had to redefine his game to keep up becoming less participative in the process but more effective if you will yet losing some of that magic that marked the early part of his peak where he was a fully fledged 'phenomenon'(in the traditional sense)

    That is my opinion

    To answer the OP

It is between 2007/08 and 2009/10 for season

    And 2014 for calender year

Out of these options there is probably no wrong answer

2018 was the last we saw of peak Cristiano Ronaldo
The late January to early April legendary form, the hattrick vs Spain in the world cup and some memorable goals he scored for juventus in the early part of 2018/19

After this he is just a great player but not the Cristiano we speak of in a historical sense(Except in some rare cases like the semi final of the UEFA nations league vs Switzerland in 2019)

Not this season acc. Gazzetta Dello Sport Ratings:

    Cristiano Ronaldo 18/19: 6.67
    Cristiano Ronaldo 19/20: 6.6
    Cristiano Ronaldo 20/21: 6.35

    https://www.gazzetta.it/calcio/fantanews/statistiche/serie-a-2020-21/

For me, 2006/2007, 2007/2008, 2009/2010 and 2010/2011... then 2011/2012 and 2008/2009 (his first half season was bad). Basically Cristiano Ronaldo peaked between 21 and 26 as a player imo, then he declined a bit after he completed 27 and more a bit when entered in his 30s, even if he won more european titles between 2016 and 2018.

    @Tropeiro

I made this comp sometime last year and would like to share it on your thread

For club and country that's 28 goals+25 wide assists in 4991 minutes(55.4 matches)
    Source:Transfermarket

Maybe the most exciting dribbler(arguable)and best ball carrier(inarguable) in premier league history

With those 53 direct goal contributions in 55 matches
There is also NINE pre assists for club and country (i didn't pull out this number from my ass i have footage for all his 2006/07 goals and the build up leading up to those goals)

Ronaldo 2006/06 was a total machine
Like completely unstoppable and quite franky unplayable in 80% of the matches he featured in

Games wherein he didnt make a notable contribution(goal, assist direct or not,the pass preceding the assist,or using his ball carrying and dribbling ability to free up space for others)were few and far between

Every single game bar maybe 5 or 6(in a 60 game season)Ronaldo made a statistical goal contribution to Manchester United/Portugal

And he was 21 years old for at least 2 thirds of this campaign

It is very arguable for me.

Hazard topped in basically all ball carrying categories in 2018/2019 (his peak) in the EPL and he showed goat-tier ball retention and ball carrying ability in the WC 2018 too.

    https://fbref.com/en/stathead/playe...yrfrom=2018&player_id3=a39bb753&p3yrfrom=2018

He even can compare himself playing in the EPL in terms of ball carrying with peak ball carrying Neymar playing in the French League:

Best performance with goals(at home vs seville)

    WS rating:10

For me this is one of his top 10 career performances

He put seville to the sword in 62 minutes with a hattrick from open play and 1 assist before being substituted (i think he was subbed off for the champions league R16 first leg against Manchester United)

2 goals scored with his left foot one of them being truly remarkable(side footing a defender before unleashing a rocket from 25 yards)
He capped the night with scoring a breathtaking counter attack that he initiated and finished
    Legendary stuff here

Best performance without goals(at home vs real betis)

    Ws rating:9.07

Ronaldo on his day(this being one of them)was still one of the best wingers in world as late as 2013
The transformation into a more goal orientated forward took place in 2013/14

Ronaldos seasonal rating for la liga 2012/13 was in fact 8.12
The difference between him in the first half campaign and the second half campaign is frankly unbelievable

I don't know of a player who can drop a level like that and then raise it so high

    For some added perspective
Messis seasonal average in la liga 2012/13 was 8.83
He did this over a period of 32 league games

Its an assumption that many have made but Lionel messi clinching his 4th consecutive ballon dor in January 2013 turned Cristiano into some kind of unrelenting beast

Denied 4 times he took his game up an entire level

The main difference between Lionel messi and Cristiano is that his base/average level is much more consistent then Cristiano Ronaldo.
    Much more

Messi seldomly has games rated below 7
It happens but its pretty rare

So in that sense Messi is definitely more consistent then Cristiano Ronaldo

What i mean here is Consistently playing at a truly elite level throughout seasons every single season during his peak

What i contest however is that Lionel messi at his best was that much better then Cristiano Ronaldo at his best

In fact moreso than Cristiano Ronaldo the most underrated trait of Lionel messi is his consistency

Cristiano Ronaldo even at his peak is a top 5-10 all timer for maybe 40% of any given campaign
For the other 40% he is a regular legend/top 10 player in the world contender
And for the remaining 20% he fluctuates from being a regular world class player to completely anonymous

Some haters here like to magnify those anonymous matches and make that representative of his true level but any impartial analyst would know that is complete bullshit

Messi during any given peak season looks like a top 5-10 all timer for at least 75% of any given campaign
For 20% he looks like a regular legend/top 10 player in the world
The remaining 5% are his anonymous matches (the ones vs inter 2010,Roma 2017,bayern munich 2020) the few la liga matches every season where he is fatigued, not bothered or rarely rarely being defensively shackled.
(Or even the few high profile international performances you sometimes like to talk about)

As much as Cristianos highest peak level of performance is underrated(the evidence is conclusive IMO) id propose Lionel messis ability to sustain that level for large swathes of every single peak season is even more underrated

    As i sidenote
I recently watched some extensive footage of Eusebio in world cup 1966 which is supposed to be his optimum version
To say i was surprised is an understatement

Id think and this is just my opinion the difference between him(a borderline top 10 all timer) and Pele (traditionally recognised as the best in this sports history)is that Pele was at the Eusebio WC 1966 level more frequently then Eusebio himself(and not that Pele his absolute peak was that much better then Eusebio)

Its a common theme that you see top level pros marvelling at the elite consistency of Lionel messi (and to a lesser extent Cristiano Ronaldo) more then they do about what they are capable on any given day.

Consistency at that kind of level is something only top level pros can appreciate
Not arm chair analysts(not even me)
Not even posters here who claim to have watched nearly every recorded game of the last 30 years

Football at that kind of level is a lived experience
Not something that can be scrutinised by any random tom, dick and Harry

This much I can agree with. Beyond the players, I would say absolutely nobody values consistency more so than the managers themselves. I know Wenger and Ferguson talked about it a lot, for example, especially with regards to players' development.

I would also say that this makes someone like Thierry Henry even more impressive because he was consistently a world-class player for like 5-6 straight seasons in an era when it was notoriously difficult to be consistent.

Someone like Cesc Fabregas too. People don't realize how consistent he was even at a very young age.

I do wonder what happened to players like Dennis Bergkamp who was very consistent, then suddenly had an off year at around the turn of the century, seemingly out of no where (no major injury, IIRC) then was able to bounce back to his usual good self.

Carlitos, what's your guess for Ronaldo's peak seasons?

    06-07, 07-08 and 08-09 (WC 2006 included and Euro 2008)
    09-10, 10-11 and 11-12 (WC 2010, Euro 2012)
    12-13, 13-14 and 14-15 (WC 2014)
    or
    15-16, 16-17 and 17-18 (Euro 2016 and WC 2018)

His ability as a player for both his team and Portugal. You need to consider his performances in big matches for both teams, overall influence and the three seasons of each.

"He's extraordinary. He has played his most important game of the season, he rescued us," he said.

"(But) it isn't right to talk about dependency on him. In the two months when he wasn't with us the team were capable of making themselves leaders."

    For some added perspective:
If you took Robert lewandowski CL 2019/20

Youd have a player who objectively closely resembles Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2013/14 CL (pre injury)

The Sweden match(his best in a Portugal shirt) was played in November 2013 (during this exact same time frame aswell)

Its not even funny anymore when @Dearman has van basten EC 1988/89 with his demonstrably inferior goals+assists per 90 rate, non existent ball carrying threat and mediocre dribbling at a greater level then this
    http://xtrahistory.blogspot.com/2018/08/the-greatest-individual-performer-in.html?m=1

Backed with a real competitive NT Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in his last 3 international tournaments
    12 goals+4 assists
    1345 minutes
    1.07 goals+assists per 90

This passed the age of 30 years old

    OPTA data
    Lionel Messi
    La liga 2009/10

    217 completed dribbles in 2840 minutes(31.5 matches)
    6.8 completed dribbles per 90
    BEAST

Very arguably the greatest season in his career

    Cristiano Ronaldo
    La liga 2009/10
    133 completed dribbles in 2465 minutes(27.3 matches)
    4.87 completed dribbles per 90
On par with Johan Cruyff 1974 dribbles per 90 rate/ball progression and a superior goal outlet

    Pedro Leon
    La liga 2009/10

    119 completed dribbles in 2749 minutes(30.5 matches)
    3.9 completed dribbles per 90

    Completely different from Whoscoreds database

I said before uncovering this that Messi 2009/10 was one of the most underrated legendary seasons ever and now i add to this Cristiano Ronaldo is definitely a superior player to peak Johan Cruyff

A player in the 8.70 to 8.80 range over a full league campaign is arguably even superior to Diego Maradona

    @Dearman
Your list of greatest individual seasons needs a review. If it was previously arguable that Messi 2009/10 > R9 1996/97
Now it is conclusive without a shadow of a doubt

The quality of the final ball has arguably never been greater at any stage of his career

The ones who say he is just a goalscorer at juventus are misinformed or just plain haters

There are top top level forwards who wouldn't have this many quality chances during entire stints at clubs

A video like this could never be made for any conventional CF
