Which is why I still maintain that CR7 at around the turn of the decade was as good a sustained peak as the modern footballing world has ever seen. It is right up there with Messi of around the same period. I genuinely couldn't tell who was better between the two, and generally just felt very blessed to have witnessed these two.

In those years, I genuinely thought I was watching the two best players of all time playing at their peak. Then, of course, Messi 14-15 happened and showed us there was, in fact, another human level above.

I loved Ronnie in 2006/07 season. Like no one ever expected him to be all bulked up and his dribbling was even better. 07/08 is my personal favourite season of Cristiano. Loved his all round game back then.

    The game:

Btw another video of C. Ronaldo 11/12 by a famous fan youtuber.

Personally, I think 2011/2012 is getting overrated if we think he was much better than other seasons he's had in his peak, in fact he lowered his numbers of dribbles completed, touches on the ball and key passes per 90 minutes if compared with his two seasons before.

Point is Real Madrid in 11-12 was a machine team and before not so much if we analyse the results with and without Cristiano Ronaldo, he had more impact before.

In 2011-2012 Real Madrid, without Cristiano Ronaldo, won all the matches including 6-2 against Dinamo Zagreb, 3-0 vs Ajax (away) and 5-1 vs Ponferradina in the Copa del Rey. While in 2009-10 and 2010-11 Real Madrid without Ronaldo had more bad than good results.

PD Good to remember that C. Ronaldo was the leader in terms of Non-PK Goals and assists (all competitions) in the two seasons before (among those who played at least 1000 minutes) and in 2011/2 with a likely less well-rounded game he was behind Benzema and Higuain.

2006/7 was a nice season, Ronaldo had something like 17 Goals and 8 assists in the EPL while being very likely the best ball carrier (and maybe the best dribbler) of the league, not so much defensive work, not so much end product against elite teams either. I compare this season of Cristiano with EPL Hazard's 14/15, 4.8 dribbles completed, 2.6 key passes per match, 14 Goals, 9 Assists, best ball carrier of the EPL. I think Neymar in 15/16 > Ronaldo 06/07 tho.

From the aesthetic point of view that was the best Ronaldo's season, but 07/8 was better imo and very likely his best season and his level matched with his best level of 09/10, 10/11 and 11/12.

    Based on this data, Cristiano Ronaldo completed more dribbles (and probably was more of a ball progressor) and was a better finisher with Manchester United and in his first season with Real Madrid than in his so called peak;

    League form.

    ~10 Expected Non-PK Goals in EPL 2007/8 27 Non-PK Goals. :)
    Also ~ 10 Expected Non-PK Goals in EPL 2006/7 and ~8.5 Expected Goals in the EPL 2008/9 = 14 Non-PK Goals
    ~12 Expected Non-PK Goals in La Liga 2009/10 and 22 Non-PK Goals.

From 2010/11 to 2017/8 he had at least around ~20 Expected Non-PK Goals.

Also according to Goalpoint site, he attempted 6.6 dribbles per 90 (up there with his 06/07 and 09/10 seasons).

    Probably his best season, 2007/8.

I was looking for it some weeks ago

If you have the time you could calculate his average score for the calendar year looking at individual match ratings provided by whoscored

I already did half the job on the dearman thread

His average for the 2nd half of 2009/10 was 8.90

Now you'll just have to go through the first half of 2010/11

His whoscored peak I presume was either 2010 or 2014

2014 is one of if not his strongest year
    2979.jpg

Reaching peaks of 9.13 in la liga between August and December 31st of 2014
    2014_12_La-Liga-Season.jpg

    25 goals
    8 assists
    2.8 KP per match
    1.7 dribbles
    11 MOTM awards
    In 14 matches

    Obscene numbers

So obscene he was directly involved in 75% of his teams goals in the first half of la liga 2014/15
    2014_12_La-Liga-Top-Image-season.jpg
25 goals + 8 assists out of 42 team goals

Ronaldo before December 2014 and after are 2 different players
    View attachment 178772
He never regained that level again in a league format except in some champions league matches

It's just my opinion but id wager Ronaldo achieved a 8.6- 8.80 ~ whoscored rating for the 2010 calender year

Its a 8.9 average for the 2nd half of la liga 2009/10
    18 matches

He scored between August and December 31st 2010
    17 goals + 6 assists in 16 matches

At worst with his all round game at that time (supported also by your infograph) whoscored would've given him a 8.4 rating for the first half of 10/11 which is approximately a 8.65 whoscored average for the calender year
    Could be higher
    But definitely not lower

Ronaldos whoscored peak level in la liga champions league are as follows:

A 9.13 rating in first half la liga 2014/15

8.96 in the 2013/14 champions league before the SF(and his injury against Dortmund)
    1148.jpg

8.90 in the second half la liga 2009/10
    18 matches
    1600 ~minutes played

His normal average peak level between 2010-2014 was 8.40(roughly)

    Before this (at Manchester United)
    It's difficult to say

    4.4 Dribbles per 90
3 goals+5 opta assists(4 pre assists to go along with that)

I can imagine in the league(against lower level opponents)it is the same or higher

    The peak is extraordinary imo
To go from that to 2014(the end product machine)

    In the EPL I guess ~ 3/3.5.

You could check it if you want, check those from 05/06 and 07/08 too. 08/09 he completed less than 2 dribbles.

Neymar did have so far more dribbles in the UCL too

    Show Spoiler

    .
    .
    UEFA Champions League - Neymar
    .
    PSG - 14 G 8 A (1.26 G+A per 90)
    - 118 DRIBLES (6.78 Dribbles per 90) -
    52 KEY PASSES (2.99 KP per 90)
    .
    .

If lightning strikes Neymar and he wins 3 Champions in a row, Copa América in 2021 and the World Cup at the end of 2022 with these numbers his position in the all-time ranking should be reviewed as well.

It is lower than I imagined.

    Cristiano Ronaldo's lowest point was in 2012. Check it out. I guess about 7.90. In 2010, 8.45, 2011, 8.45-8.50.

    In 2013 and 2014 it was higher (8.60 - 8.90)

    In the league yes(1.8)

    Champions league almost certainly no

He was stiff pretty much all season(he had ankle problems in 2008 and 2009)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/f...jury-fears-put-Real-Madrid-move-in-doubt.html

I'm not saying it was much more but it is more in the CL(from footage ive reviewed)

His strengths in 2009 (before his short lived resurgence in early 2010) were clearly not dribbling

It was shot power,FKs,header and ball carrying
He was a the danger man in that sense (without the close control wizardry from 2007)

With space he was a threat like no other in 2009

    It was 8.02

2012 is truly a tale of 2 halfs

There is the first half where he was really devastating and at a real elite level

    1_9-3LUC9KNbfzO3J69psYhg.png
    1_4lkZVUOriXTDvhpG5Stc8A.png
The rating nosedived in the first half of la liga 2012/13 when his level and the level of real Madrid dropped (cassilas was heavily criticized as were real Madrids defence and Messi went on that GOAT scoring run that capped him the ballon dor)

His confirmed peak(and not prime) was

    2014(clearly IMO) as a 1 year peak

At club level that was as dominant a peak as there ever has been

He has arguably been equally or slightly more brilliant at a few points in his career
But never ever as sustained as this

2008 had the drop off mid way through the year due to injuries

2012 had the drop off after Euro 2012

2010 had relatively inconsistent periods of form at the start of 2010/11

2015-2020 is well well well below this at league level
Although I like his 2019/20 season alot(his best since 14/15 IMO)

    That leaves 2013 and 2007
Insanely good and consistent at league and international level functioning in different roles

    Calender year peak
    2014
    2007
    2011
    2012
    In that order

    Season peak
Will come back to this later

    Euro 2004
At Euro 2004, where he was a 19-year-old who parachuted into the final years of Portugals Golden Generation. Ronaldo attempted more dribbles (7.79) than anybody else at the tournament and ranked among the leaders in shots on goal with 4.1

    2006-2009
Ronaldo became the focal point of the attack, or, rather, because Rooney was also an unorthodox striker rather than a traditional centre-forward, the pair were the hub of a fluid offense, each reacting to the other's movement. Ronaldo began to exploit his aerial ability, scoring eight league goals over three seasons with his head and vastly outperforming expected goals -- xG -- which amounted to 3.03 in that time.

He usually lined up on the right, but occasionally played through the middle or on the left, but in some ways where he started mattered less than where he ended up: all over the pitch, creating mismatches and wreaking havoc. As he took on more attacking responsibility, he started taking more shots and averaged more than five a game, a figure he would stay above through the rest of his United career.

Not only that but, to use Neville's term, he started "bollocking it" from distance. Of the 527 shots Ronaldo took in those three seasons, nearly 60% came from more than 21 yards out. That would remain a hallmark throughout his career, although his effectiveness from distance has waned over time. So too has his dead-ball prowess; in this period, he scored nine free kick goals in the league

United won three consecutive league titles and, just as important, excelled in the Champions League, reaching a semifinal and two finals (winning it all in 2007-08). Over the past 50 years, the club have reached the final four of the Champions League or European Cup on only five occasions: three of them came in this period, with Ronaldo running rampant.

While this piece is mostly about his individual statistics and how he has changed and evolved, you cannot forget that football is a team game. And it is not a coincidence that his last three years at United, when he was tasked with carrying the team, coincided with arguably the best three-year period in club history.

    2009/10
Real Madrid finished second in 2009-10 but were a disjointed side that crashed out of the Champions League at the round-of-16 stage. That they ranked last in La Liga for shot quality, with an xG/shot of 0.06, tells you this was more a bunch of individuals than a team.

Ronaldo took responsibility, as he had done at United. He led the team in shots and dribbles attempted, and his time was divided quite equally along the attacking front: left, right and centre. He finished the campaign with 33 goals; 26 of them were scored in La Liga, which saw him one behind Gonazalo higuain

    To be continued

Now This is what could potentially raise his score even higher than 2009/10

    Defence (who would've thought?)

    CR 2007/08

    0.1 clearances per 90

Defensively in 2007/08 he was WAY better than 2009/10(and any Madrid season for that matter)

Offensively he was only slightly worse
Although objectively I cannot see it seeing as the PL between 2007-2010 was widely considered to be greater than la liga
(Even though optas algorithm doesn't take this fact into consideration im just mentioning it)
