COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Crew announced today that, with the help of its fans, it plans to "Black Out" the stands at Crew Stadium for its 5 p.m. showdown against the Los Angeles Galaxy on September 30.

Fans attending the nearly sold-out game against the Galaxy are encouraged to show their support for the Black & Gold by wearing black attire to Crew Stadium that night. The "Black Out" is intended as a rallying point for Crew fans in attendance, while also providing an electric atmosphere for a match that is sure to have MLS playoff implications.

While Crew fans are encouraged to don any piece of black attire for the September 30th contest, limited edition "09.30.07 Black Out" shirts will also be available for purchase that night in the Crew Gear merchandise store, while supplies last.

So will the official theme music be from Spinal Tap or the Scorpions?

    Dear Crew Management,

Instead of worrying about how you are going to market this match, please begin worrying about making sure the match actually matters.

    Sincerely,

The fact that Grouchy didn't see that there was a thread on this in the supporters forum means we should probably keep this thread open.

Ok, a "Black Out" I can see. Penn State has had success with it's "White Out", which is rather spectauclar at night, and I think the Buckeyes did a "Red Sea" last season. All of those make sense.... But That School Up North did a "Maize Out" last year. How does that make any sense??? Corny....

If you are a Michigan fan a "Maize Out" doesn't seem too bad. While it doesn't roll off the tongue like "Red Sea" it's actually the school color. OSU probably didn't think "Scarlet Out" or "Scarlet Sea" or "Scarlett O'Hara" sounded too cool.

From my experience in Block "O", the marketing department in the OSU Athletic Department is a joke. But I guess, how hard is it to get people to come to a game that was sold out before tickets went on sale to the public? About the same could be said for the people that work in ticketing, but that's another rant.

Look--Blackouts exist in real life--so do whiteouts (at least in Buffalo and points north). There is a real-life Red Sea. That's part of the fun of it.

But there is no such thing as a "maize out". *That* was all a supposedly academically superior school such as UM could come up with?? Even a caveman could do better. The best they could do was imitate--and that poorly.

As a Michigan student, I will say I don't think most of the student body cared/cares about "Maize Out." The student section is usually top to bottom in maize for each game - so throwing the "Maize Out" gimmick won't cause more people to wear maize. As for the rest of the Big House, I don't remember seeing anymore maize last year than any other game.

Sr. Blanco has been scoring and assisting and now the Fire is only one point away from the Crew.

Aside from giving out free shirts at the gate, there's no way they're actually going to get a significant number of people to go along with this. At Penn State, OSU, and Michigan, they sell out every game and everyone there is crazy about the team and willing to show they're spirit.

The Crew sold out one game because of a guy on the other team. The Beckham fan, the curiosity seeker, and the soccer mom and her 3-, 5- and 9-year olds aren't going to go out of their way to dress in any particular way for this match, just like they don't generally wear black or yellow stuff to any other matches.

Expect to see a lot of assorted Beckham shirts, assorted foreign club shirts, and random whatever, just like you see at every other match.

And this is all assuming that anyone even knows about any of this before the get to the stadium.

Were you at the game this past year (or even the year before)? It was a nice view from the rafters in chrysler arena for an ohio state fan. I enjoyed the trip both times. I'm going to miss Tommy Amaker, at least you still have Llyod Carr to beat up on though.

I'm just glad they didn't try a blackout for a 5pm game in the middle of the summer.

    The front office, of course.

What else would they be doing for the Crew?

I am kind of confused why not go for yellow. The banana kits distinguish us from the rest of the league. Black is the main color for DCuntied.
If nothing else, black runs the risk of showing how few people are in the stands, given the bleachers are gold. At least with a "gold out" or "yellow out" the holes in the crowd is not so easy to distinguish.
Seems like the marketers hit the outer circle of the target again.
I'll wear the appropriate color regardless. I believe yellow would have been a better choice.

Probably because the Galaxy have yellow but no black in their kits and they usually wear white, the diametric opposite of black. That's my guess. So is this thing just for a game or is it a playoff run thing?

Doesn't the Crew have enough problems with balckouts without needing to promote them?

Can't we just all agree to wear something clear so nobody will be offended by which color we choose or don't choose?

There are very few people I want to see in clear clothing at a Crew game.

Those white Herbalife shirts are really going to stand out among the sea of black at this game.

As for the question of "why black instead of yellow", I'd assume the front office is figuring that more folks have some sort of black shirt sitting at home than yellow ones.
