Interessting FT article on the return of visitors to Las Vegas. They are almost back to pre-pandemic levels even though they are not hosting trade shows nor international tourists. Gambling is way up, especially slot machines. The Raiders have got to be soooo happy they are there. Las Vegas dices with Delta as the casinos roar back to life https://t.co/nSq58ZV2OL— Dave Lee (@DaveLeeBBG) August 7, 2021
I went to Vegas with my wife, after getting the second vaccine dose, in April. It wasn't fully open and there were some casino rules that many people didn't follow (like masks). Also most of the shows weren't running. We did see Piff the Magic Dragon who did a good job of folding in all the drama; like he couldn't go beyond a special rope without a mask due to distance from the audience, unless he was eating, when he roamed about saying how he felt so protected being close to people now that he was eating. My really big issue was walking around the strip. Literally every 3 feet someone was smoking pot. You couldn't stay away from the smoke/smell and I ended up smelling like I smoked a bowl myself after 10 minutes walking outside.
I just spent an hour watching this very good Bill Kristol interview of Dr. Ashish Jha (Dean of the Brown School of Public Health, and pretty visible in the public sphere on COVID), about where we are and where we are likely headed with COVID. I thought it was quite informative and pretty apolitical; I didn't really have a sense for how things are going to likely play out 3-6-9-12-24 months from now, and he talks about that in some detail. Of course it is still educated guesswork at this point, but I thought it was pretty useful to at least know what an educated guess would look like. Overall, I thought his outlook was a little rosier than I might have thought (though we do have a few more rough months coming) but there is still the possibility of an even worse variant coming along, something he acknowledged but didn't really factor into his predictive outlook. And in fact he admits that his 6 months ago predictions failed because he didn't see delta coming. https://conversationswithbillkristol.org/video/ashish-jha-iii/
Nothing to do with Covid, but, interesting map on race and ethnicity. https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2021/us/census-race-ethnicity-map/
Typical - when you open the map, it's zoomed as close as possible to Manhattan. Some things never change....
Actually if you're tech savvy enough to have location enabled on your device, it centers around your location. Some things never change . No real surprises for me with the map, except that I never really realized that "East" Palo Alto is actually north of Palo Alto.
FIFY. I never default to allowing location, I use VPN for all WiFi connections, and I only wear my apple watch when I'm actually refereeing games. I really don't appreciate Google, Apple, et al knowing where I am and what I'm doing at all times. If you're naïve enough that you don't mind - more power to you....
The following tweet might be interpreted as political, but to me, it explained why white anti-vaxers protest something that would help them. This week, I tackled these questions: What’s the endgame of the anti-mask, anti-vax campaign? Won’t it backfire when their own constituents get sick and die?To answer, I show the connection between theories of White supremacy and the anti-mask debate.https://t.co/3Qtz6GQL8R1/— Teri Kanefield (@Teri_Kanefield) August 15, 2021
Pulisic Is not on our MLS team, but this is an interesting complication for USMNT. He says he was fully vaccinated. https://t.co/uHQNrdiZ5z— Brian Straus (@BrianStraus) August 20, 2021
It turns out that the Euros and England’s progress to their final “generated a significant risk to public health across the UK even when England played overseas.” 9,400 positive tests from Euros fans, whereas Wimbledon with 300k attendees generated 881 cases. Of course, differing fan behavior was a key factor. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...nked-to-euro-2020-games-in-mass-events-scheme
"Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine becomes first to win FDA's full approval, paving way for boosters, mandates" (USA Today - Monday, 8/23/21) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Hopefully more people will get vaccinated now. I remember going to the local junior high school with hoards of other people to get the polio vaccine. When I started school, we had to show proof that I had been vaccinated against several things. I don’t understand the vaccine hesitancy. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. But then, I’m old and this country was very different back in the day. We have seen more people get vaccinated in the last couple of weeks, so that’s good. Still, the number of people not getting the shot, or taking a horse de-worming medicine instead just boggles the mind. Whatever, this looks like movement in the right direction. Have to hope. Here’s another good (and pretty long) tweet explaining anti-vax reasoning, and how a midwestern company is dealing with it. COVID Update: With requirements rolling across the country, I called a company that implemented vaccine requirements last month. Here is the experience & lessons for the rest of us. 1/— Andy Slavitt 🇮🇱 🇺🇦 (@ASlavitt) September 14, 2021
