He lacked the family pedigree as well.

Sullivan is from an established soccer family.

I recall watching on a DVD years ago with Roy Keane running a training session for ManU youth academy players that appeared about 12-14 years old. They run the session and then takes a Q&A with the boys. Someone asks something like what it takes to make it to the senior team?
Keane just looks at them and says, " all of you have the talent otherwise you wouldn't be here. But, to reach the higher levels, it takes DESIRE.". The way Keane emphasised "desire" I'm sure sent a chill.down the spines of those talented boys.

Are you sure you’ve been here since 2017? (If so, kudos for the irrepressible optimism displayed in expecting people to read before posting.)

lol being from a soccer family can also be a bad thing, causes players to peak early and their development to go a certain path instead of them being allowed to develop. have you ever wondered why kids with soccer players as parents almost always are attackers?

I am firmly in the camp of this kid will not reach his expectations its obviously very easy to think that and I am already calling it a correct call on my part.

I brought that up because his family is full of players and coaches and that puts a different kind of set of expectations as well as a support network that helps keep them focused.

Quinn obviously competes with him....he scored a Golazo shortly before Cavan came on. Thats good pressure.

Pretty risky call there given expectations are playing for the best team in the world. Yeah it’s more likely he won’t reach that level than will just based on probabilities.

the rest of the stuff about soccer player parents etc has no statistical backing and is just speculation on your part.

the union and man city are not the best teams in the world.

    Real Madrid exists haha

wait ur calling my opinion based on facts speculation but saying the kid is the best player of his generation and will lead the us to a wc win in 26 is what??? you also called either the union or man city(who he doesn't play for) the best team in the world so im sure speculation totally puzzles you lol.

I havent said anything about how good he is only commented on “the expectations.”

So far nothing you have said is based on facts.

so you think the union are the best team in the world?

I am going to say they aren't if you don't think that is a fact I am not sure what to tell you.

I think we are on different wave lengths. I meant expectations for him in his career are to be good enough to play for the best team in the world. Falling short of that is pretty darn likely.

Siblings absolutely apply competitive pressure, many times much more motivating pressure than anyone else.

What is Cavan’s current and potential athleticism like? Does his speed project to being like Donovan’s?

He accelerates quickly in traffic with the ball, which honestly is more like Messi (not a direct comparison…dont freak out, everyone) than Donovan. I don’t know about his open field speed, but he looks pretty sharp in traffic.

and of course didn't play because the goal was to break the record and the kids growth had to take a backseat to that for a couple weeks.

He's quick, and his brother is pretty athletic. But I would not expect Donovan speed. I suspect that his speed will be good enough at the highest levels but not enough to be a notable asset relative to top flight competition.

If that was actually the goal, then they wouldn't waste a bench spot on a player they had no intention of ever playing except to break the record.

If you're going to speak nonsense, at least make sure that it's internally consistent.

No, its because the game didn't require it.
It was a tight 2-0 affair for most of the game with Nashville dominating possession (~60%). Curtin brought the vets off the bench to bring home the win. He didn't use Sullivan or the other young homegrowns. If the game had been different, maybe Curtin would have given a debut to new homegrown signing Frankie Westfield.

And when Philly's players come back from the Olympics and the U20 CONCACAF Championships, Cavan will more-than-likely be back in the MLSNP team.

This is not some weird media stunt. We're in the dog days of summer when international callups, injuries, fixture congestion, suspensions add up. They need guys. For Pete's sake, the kid who's been on the bench instead of Cavan Sullivan this season has been David Vazquez. You know? The left winger who scored a brace against Jamaica at the CONCACAF U20 Championships this past weekend. But since he's in Mexico at that event, he can't also be on the bench for Philadelphia. So the Union brought a left winger up from the MLSNP team. Cavan is on a first team contract.

New England started a 16 year old fullback this past weekend. Dallas was bringing teenagers up from their MLSNP team on emergency loans.

Many teams are doing exactly what Philly is doing. Its just that Philly's top prospect in their MLSNP team is soon-to-be 15 and not 16.

but they did...he had a 5 min cameo and then he watched saturday. there is no reason for him to be there if he isn't going to play he is 14. there are other matches he could play and and should be playing in going 90 minutes for his development.

him watching an mls match as the 18th player on the roster for matchday does nothing for him or development he needs to play matches.

they are doing him no favors with him not getting minutes.

we all may agree/disagree on the best way or place for him to develop but I think we all agree he needs to play to actually develop.

oh so he wasn't needed in a 2-0 'tight affair'...which is great because when you have a dominate talent like that on the bench you'd sub him to make it a 3,4,5,6,7-0 match(I mean who knows how many goals he could've contributed to right). however if you have a 14 who isn't ready to play..you keep his butt glued to the bench like th

it wasn't a weird media stunt it was an awful media stunt.

NE..STARTED...thats my point he started he didn't have a five min cameo in one match.

him going right backdown proves my point he doesn't belong if he belonged he would stay and play real minutes. he doesn't belong and gave a bad team having an awful season with people calling for the owner to sell and the coach to be fired really good publicity by breaking a 'record' that isn't actually a record.

    You're not making any sense.

This is just an argument for the sake of an argument. It's not worth my time.
Everyone has tried to explain it.

He's still so young that they will only use him in specific situations. Being up two goals isn't one of those. The other game was tailor made son he could dip his foot in the pond with no chance to screw anything up.
