    Not always.

Below is a summary of Argentina's representatives in the Libertadores since 2009:

2009: Lanús, Rio da Prata, Boca Júniores, São Lourenço, and Estudantes. Only Boca and Estudantes advanced.

2010: Estudantes, Vélez Sársfield, Banfield, Lanús, Colón, and Newell's Old Boys. Of these teams (Argentina had the largest contingent in that Libertadores), a "mere" 3 made it through: Estudantes, Banfield, and Vélez. Not bad, since 5 of these 6 were in the group stages; Colón fell to Universidade Católica on PKs in the playoff stage.

In 2011, Argentinos Júniores, Estudantes, Vélez Sársfield, Godoy Cruz, and Independente. From these 5 sides, only two reached the round of 16: Estudantes and Vélez.

The last time Argentina had a large contingent in both the group and elimination stages was 2008: Lanús, Rio da Prata, Arsenal, Boca Júniores, São Lourenço, and Estudantes. Only Arsenal failed to reach the group stage.

For Brazil, the story has admittedly been a bit different in recent years.

2008: São Paulo, Santos, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Cruzeiro. All made it to the elimination rounds.

2009: São Paulo, Grêmio, Cruzeiro, Sport, and Palmeiras. All made it to the round of 16.

2010: Corinthians, Flamengo, Internacional, São Paulo, and Cruzeiro. Again, all 5 advanced from the group stage.

2011: Internacional, Santos, Fluminense, Cruzeiro, Grêmio. Last year, these 5 teams reached the elimination rounds. Corinthians did not get past the playoff group.

I will not criticize the Argentine teams' performances since 2008, but I will say this: the recent years' high rates of success for my country's teams in advancing from the group stage speaks of the improving quality of Brazil's domestic soccer conditions. Better finances, better structure, the repatriation of stars once playing in UEFA, etc. Not to mention the traditional strength of Brazilian soccer.

It's not going to affect the standings much, but if Boca can beat Flu tomorrow in Rio that would make a huge statement. Because, to win the title you probably will have to win in Brazil at some point.

    VAMOS BOCA!!!

Será difícil sin Riquelme, y probablemente sin Ledesma.

Roman being out always hurts but this team has shown the ability to play and win without him which back in 2007 wasn't even an option. Also the way Tanque Silva has been creating and distributing the loss will be a little less felt. Pablito is the one that I really want available as he's been scoring timely goals whenever he gets on the field.

Bolivar is showing what I had not seen from a Bolivian team in a long time: corazón.

They die fighting to the last second. Bravo for them.

That should be a good match for sure as a round of 16 berth will be on the line. I'd go with Bolivar because of the La Paz altitude - but the other Chilean side in this group, União Espanhola, won there 1-3.

As for the last game of the evening, Atlético Nacional has beaten Peñarol 3-0 without difficulty. With this result, we have another eliminated team: Godoy Cruz. It's too bad, because this Godoy Cruz team is quite a fighter. They fell into a VERY hard group last year (LDU, Independente, Peñarol) and only a home loss to Peñarol kept them out of the round of 16.

This will set up a showdown for first place in this group between Atlético Nacional and Universidade de Chile. Should be a GREAT match amongst two teams from whom I expect good performances come the round of 16.

You would think the game would be fantastic but I think Nacional plays it safe and just goes for the draw. We shall see.

Chilean teams are not affected that much by altitude... If Católica are beaten they have only themselves to blame. Union Española showed the way.

Surprised to find out that Pratto was loaned over to Velez from Genoa. Realized he was back in S.America after scoring the second goal against Chivas coming off the bench.
