Aguero stepped on Daniel Alves' foot. That's not a PK for Argentina.

Aguero is looking to his right and moving forward as Alves' right foot comes out to trip Aguero. The ball is not near the players.

Brazil deserved clear penalties in the WC 2018 (e.g., against Belgium) but didn't get despite VAR. Brazil never questioned or criticized FIFA or anybody else even though that was a much greater loss (at WC level). These Argies are ridiculous. It just shows the difference between a team used to winning often and other teams. Neymar got banned for speaking out after the apparent injustice to PSG against Man U. When will Messi get banned? If he doesn't get banned, then the "corruption" is in his favor.

Nope, doesn't matter; the STEPPER was Aguero. He fell because he stepped on another person's foot. Try that at that speed and see if you remain on your feet.

We are champions again, only 6 Copas separate us from Uruguay now. Maybe in my lifetime we could close this gap.

One of the great mysteries in Seleção’s history is how we spent 40 years (1949 to 1989) without winning this competition a single time, missing all our golden generation.

The story of the 1959 Copa when the game ended with Garrincha’s goal’s shot in mid air is one of the most outrageous I’ve ever heard.

Uruguay won it 15 times and Argentina won it 14 times.

However, if one looks at the historical record more closely, there's a lot of context.

First, in 1959, there were two tournaments. The second one was called "extra." Argentina and Uruguay won one each in the same year.

Second, of Uruguay's 15 titles, 6 were won in the past 60 years from 1959 to 2019.

Third, of Argentina's 14 titles, only were won since 1959.

Fourth, the modern format of group stages followed by a knockout phase is relatively recent. Up until 1967, the South American Championship followed a league format.

Brazil had a 12-year-long drought before 2019. But from 1997 to 2007, it won the title 4 times - Brazil won 5 of the past 9 tournaments stretching back to 1997. That's not bad in the post-Tetra era; Brazil won more than half of the tournaments since, and that's also considering the 2015-2016 double with the Copa América Centenário.

Lastly: much is being said about home field next year for Argentina and Colombia, but Brazil has won this tournament abroad aplenty. With the final being in Colombia, Brazil has a solid chance of winning it again in 2020.

I am so enamored by Gabriel Jesus' incredible performances, especially after all the stick he got following the World Cup. Arthur was getting some stick as well because of not being able to play decisive passes. What a fantastic run he had yesterday to set up the second goal. Everton too proved his quality. I think this is a great foundation for the future.

Innocent Messi did not deserve the red! This angle clearly shows who the aggressor was to begin with.

I am really not liking Messi's attitude and commentaries at the end with his ridiculous claims that Conmebol set it up for Brasil.

Posting this more than two months late...

LOL. He can say whatever he wants. Let's see him win a title with his country. That'll have far more weight than making childish and ignorant accusations.

Would you really put your hand on fire for CONMEBOL ? CBF ?

Where I would put my hand is thoroughly immaterial re: Messi's statements.

However, he would have been more prudent to have considered the fact that the president of his own country's football association happens to be a senior official within the very continental federation he accused of corruption. And if we're going to talk about local federations being shady, he should look to the organization running soccer in his country of birth and look at the last election, where a tied vote somehow involved one more vote than the total number of delegates eligible to vote.

If you call the accusations ignorant that means you think they are unfounded and untrue ... no ? We (as in Brazilians) accuse CONMEBOL of corruption in Libertadores against Brazilian clubs all the time. This is no different. I don't doubt anything in terms of CONMEBOL tilting the scales to whatever side at any given time.

On the contrary. Argentina's influence in CONMEBOL is a lot stronger than Brazil's. But let's say every federation has an equal level of influence.

Why did Messi not call out Tapia then? Tapia is the head man of AFA and he occupied a senior-level position within CONMEBOL. Messi is saying that an organization where the #1 man in his own country's football federation occupies a top spot did something to harm his team?
