Btw, the CNL-relevant part of today's announcement is that the Finals will take place in the US in March 2021, and that the next edition will be played from June 2022 to March 2023.
The idea is that since the summer of 2022 is vacant, they can play 4 NL group stage games in June and the last 2 in September, just like UEFA will do.
Remember, the CNL is mostly for the non-World Cup type teams to get meaningful games. At least from the CONCACAF perspective. 27 CONCACAF teams will be eliminated from the World Cup by March of 2021. Quite a few will be playing the Gold Cup qualifiers or the actual Gold Cup in the summer of 2021 but that's it for while.
What exactly is the point of having CNL Finals in March 2021 when the Gold Cup is going to be a few months later in July? Since the winner qualifies for absolutely nothing, these are glorified friendlies. There's more at stake in the Gold Cup qualifiers. And why even continue with a biennial Gold Cup now that CNL has started? It's all becoming way too diluted. Don't CNL Finals act as de facto continental championships?
The point of the CNL Finals is for Concacaf to try and break even 'cause they definitely burnt holes in their pockets offering travel grants for all the group stage games (let's see you try to wring a profit out of Cayman Islands vs. USVI).
Presumably (haven't heard anything definitive yet, mind) the same original venues: Houston's MLS stadium for USA-Honduras and NFL venues for the other games.
So the Final 4 has been moved a third time... Concacaf Nations League Finals rescheduled for June 2021 Read More: https://t.co/PMU3gHgBjN— Concacaf Nations League (@CNationsLeague) September 22, 2020 The clear message is, "If there's even a chance we can't play these games at full capacity, we'd rather wait."
They better not be stupid and put the games head-to-head against the Copa America. They should do it like the weekend before CA starts up.
I believe there are days off within the Copa America so with some smart scheduling and Copa America only having 2 groups they may be able to put it on at the same time but not during another Copa America match.
First time I've seen this, but: according to Jon Arnold's latest piece, TUDN is reporting that the Final Four will take place in Chicago (likely Soldier Field) with no attendance.
Thank you for linking to that blog. Since Howard Hamilton stopped Hexagonal Blog years ago, I didn't know of any Concacaf blogs.
Concacaf announced Thursday that Empower Field at Mile High in Denver will host the inaugural Concacaf Nations League finals from June 3-6. https://www.frontrowsoccer.com/2021...-host-concacaf-nations-league-finals-in-june/
Odd choice. Playing at high altitude in the Summer. I wonder how many people will be allowed in the stadium.
Anybody see anything about kickoff times? Considering flying in for them but it will depend on what times the Thursday games start and Sunday Final ends.
