Maybe we'll get a matchup against Erick Scott's team. He'll probably torch us for five or six goals, too.
Maybe we'll draw another Mexican team whose idea of good sportmanship is to have the team doctor get so deeply involved in helping their team stall and timewaste when it looked like the Crew might come back that he got red carded.
With Greg Andrulis in charge, the Crew could face the worst spanking ever. Somewhere Morelia's U12 team is rubbing its hands with joy...
It looks like we're not in the Champions Cup: http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/news/mls_...05&content_id=18380&vkey=mlscup2004&fext=.jsp
Absolutely!!! The winner of MLS Cup and the winner of the Supporters Shield should get in. It's criminal that the 2nd place team in the playoffs get rewarded, and the team with the best record over the course of the entire season don't. An absolute TRAVESHAMOCKERY!!!! What's wrong with the people in the league office? Don't they have any sense whatsoever?!!! Shameful.
If the massive amount of ******** that we take from the league, our front office, and our own coaching staff figured into the club's general massiveness quotient, we'd be bigger that Arsenal and Real combined.
Ahhh.. The "Columbus Rule" strikes again. Rule 1.1 Whenever Columbus Crew benefit from something, always give that benefit to the team directly beneath them. You should have to win a domestic trophy in order to advance to the next round. What does MLS not understand about that? New England, LA, and DC haven't won anything this year. One of these teams might possibly not win trophy in MLS all year long, yet have a chance to play on the international scale. Oh well, here's to Freddy Adu's ankles being crushed by some Mexican.
Am I just getting too cynical because I think this decision gives DC United and Adu the best chance at getting into the tournament? Not that United can't win MLS Cup, but now they only have to get there.
Gee, now winning the regular season means even less. There's really not much point amymore is there? Of course there's no explanation in the article - MLS press releases are so Orwellian that it's frightening. There's no question whatever that the point of this is to get DC in. Why else would this be announced right now? If they waited another day or so until DC won then it would be even MORE obvious. Not that shame is a big item with them anyway. Incredible. Just incredible.
Actually it's just one of those things MLS, CONCACAF, and FIFA had to agree on in order to get the CWC up and going. The European teams just refused to participate if there was even a possibility they would have to face the massivity of the Crew. It's understandable, no one really wants to see Roberto Carlos get shown up by Chris Wingert all game anyway. It's just not fair for the world footballing community to have to play the Crew.
Doesn't really bother me that much. Look, we crashed out of the US Open Cup and then crashed out of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Had we gone to the final of the US Open Cup and at least gotten to the Eastern Conference Final, we would have a legitimate gripe. But this club failed in the important games, and does not deserve to represent MLS in the Champions Cup.
