Yeah, I'm a Flo fan too. Would be really sorry to lose him.

Cade? Our you serious??? He's a huge asset for the Quakes right now in terms of his value! He will likely be a multi-million $ transfer in a few years. He's absolutely untouchable. He also happens to be our leading scorer.

I thought about TT, but as much as I like the way he plays, I don't think he'd have all that much value. Not nearly enough to bring in a proven goalscorer in a swap. I had always thought that he'd wind up in Sac when they get an MLS team - it makes sense - trade for the hometown guy, but looks like they're not getting an MLS any time soon and maybe ever. He's been injured, but also seems to have fallen out of the lineup. If we go with 3 in the back, or if Almeyda thinks he needs to play Judson at right back (he doesn't, and he shouldn't), hard for TT to get in the lineup.

I was thinking purely in terms of what's best for Cade. better for his confidence and overall development to be on a better team, I believe. less pressure, better environment, better exposure, better facilities, possibly even some world class players who can be mentors. I think Wondo and Shea have been great mentors as the old timers on the team, some of the other guys too, he's getting great coaching I'm sure, but he's likely to quickly outgrow this team and needs to be in a more ambitious, successful environment where winning is a possibility.

We'd be the laughingstock of MLS if we traded Cade to another MLS team, even much moreso than we are now!

yeah, let's not do that. we're kind of the laughingstock already, why make it worse? plus, he's the best thing about tuning in these days. hopefully there's a ways to go before he outgrows San Jose and they can hold onto some positivity over what's shaping up to be a bumpy second half of the season.

If by any chance Chris Leitch does get the permanent gig one of the first things he should do is replace Alex Covelo. I heard last fall from someone I trust that Covelo was telling people he would be the next Quakes’ coach after Almeyda. It came out of left field and I had trouble believing it at first until I realized that Jesse had moved him to the bench twice (under Leitch and Ralston) and had recently gave him the U20 coaching duties. Clearly his resume was being built. Thank goodness that is now unlikely to happen (unless Almeyda and his posse walk out soon).

Leitch won’t have an ally in Covelo and he’s better off escorting him out before he undercuts the program. Hire Ian Russell as Technical Director and let him run the reserve team until Almeyda has decided to coach elsewhere.

Ask any A's fan if Fisher likes to hold on to great players.

I'm afraid Fisher will sell Cade the very second he gets the right price for him.

Imo, Espinoza was at his best when Eriksson and Tommy were around him.

I think everyone excepts that to happen relatively soon, and soccer is different because most people would be happy about it, even Quakes fans, assuming he goes to Europe or some other superior league. But not an MLS trade! We were talking trades within the league.

Yeah, they both fed him a lot. TT completely deferred to him. Also helps I think to have a regular lineup. This year it's been kind of all over the place.

I don't think any MLS team would make an offer that approaches Cade's current value let alone his potential value. The offer would have to come from a wealthy European club (I think).

Yep, that's the main reason. Secondary reason is that fans would be a lot more upset about it - most soccer fans have a partly US nats view, and a like for like trade wouldn't necessarily be seen as a step up in his career. He could go to a better MLS team, but how about he helps make us better first? Tertiary reason is that do we really want him competing against us?

guess what’s still open this morning?

what better way for CL and the entire organization to say they recognize and appreciate this recent run of form against all odds?

just one player please, trade is fine.

How does he bring in an international player without getting rid of one?

Trade Vega to Monterey Bay like they did with Jimmy Oxford to Nashville?

(Pssttt....Frank do us a favor and roster this guy next year and we'll send you a bunch of young kids to fill out your roster on our payroll)

The fact that Vega is picking splinters out of his ass whilst taking up a sr. international slot alone should have had Jesse the Jenius packing his bags...

Do DPs count against available international slots? We have one or two of those available depending on Chofis’ floating status.

It’s going to be hard to convince me that we can’t do anything over the current transfer window if the will, smarts and technical ability are there.

For anybody who's interested - all the rules are here: https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/2021-mls-roster-rules-and-regulations

I've heard it stated that it takes a CPA to understand them (looking at you, Falvo). I am a (former) CPA, and can attest that there is nothing in my educational or professional background that would help, but the rules are not that opaque and difficult to comprehend. I think a GED is really more than adequate, and "not understanding the rules" is a feeble defense for any GM.

Oh - and to answer the question, DPs DO count against the international roster slots.

Thanks for clarifying. The window is slowly closing anyway so this is all moot in a few days anyway. Maybe it’s completely unrealistic to expect CL to be able do anything at this point, or maybe this season was a total write-off since game #1?

Truth is Fish closed the window months ago and our best hope is the purple sweater.

If I were Chris Leach and I was allowed by Fisher to do this, I would consider approaching Arsenal about loaning Folarin Balogun for the rest of the season. He would qualify as American and probably be excited to be a starter for half a season before going back to play for Arsenal. To make space maybe Leach can convince Orange County FC to do a permanent loan for Eric Calvillo? Not sure if that is allowed midway through the year, but maybe.

Balogun could probably bang in 10 goals in the second half of the year if Almeyda played him. He would absolutely open up space for Cade.

Here's what Balogun looks like in action.

You know how I make this work financially to stay under the cap? I work out a deal with Arsenal that if they loan Balogun this summer I loan them Cowell over the winter. You think Cade wouldn't love developing chemistry with Balogun and then go to England to play next to him in an Arsenal uniform? Win-win for both players and both teams. Almeyda has to be on board with giving Balogun significant minutes though.

nice. I'd be ecstatic. we get Cade back, having significantly honed his goal scoring skills under top tier coaching, we have a chance to keep this Matias run of form going, maybe even get a whiff of the playoffs. sounds like a brilliant move.

It would be super complicated to pull off. You have to sell three players on the benefits (Balogun,Cowell and Calvillo) three teams (OC,SJ and Arsenal) and fit within the rules of three leagues (MLS,EPL and USLC).

If you could pull it off, you benefit multiple programs and coaches. El Salvador head coach Hugo Perez would love to see Calvillo get a lot of minutes and stay sharp for WCQ. Berhalter would be ecstatic to see dual nat eligible players Balogun and Cowell developing chemistry as well.

Cowell looks good in the EPL and Quakes can get a windfall in the winter transfer window. Maybe Arsenal looks to loan other young players the following year if the Balogun loan works well.

Yeah, i'm just dreaming on a soccer board....

Cowell would likely not see a minute of action in the EPL, he would be on their reserve league team or whatever they call it no. Maybe he would play in an FA Cup game against a non-league opponent.
Imo, Cade is just not being utilized properly. Even though he has the physicality to compete, he doesn't have the technical ability to take players on one-on-one. His biggest attribute is his pace. He needs to learn how to make runs ala-Jamie Vardy behind the defenders where he can run onto through balls. Vardy doesn't often beat defenders on the dribble, but, he gets behind them and only has the goalie to beat. Obviously this take players who can make the passes that will send Cade through, and maybe we just don't have that yet.
