It looks like he's now at fourth-division club Eintracht Trier: Charlie Rugg, Winterzugang des Südwest-Spitzenreiters SV Eintracht Trier, war in den zwei jüngsten Testspielen beim Landesligisten FC Speyer (4:0) und gegen die U 23 des Drittligisten Stuttgarter Kickers (1:0) erstmals für die Mannschaft von Eintracht-Trainer Peter Rubeck am Ball. http://www.4-liga.com/nachrichten-trier--us-boy-charlie-rugg-gewoehnt-sich-ein-24944.html He's a '90 striker with experience at various levels of U.S. soccer. http://www.mlssoccer.com/players/charlie-rugg And he's yet another player to get the "former Beckham teammate" tag in media reports. Also some past overseas trials. Thread merge, mods? http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads/college-player-charlie-rugg-on-trial-with-Åtvidaberg-swedish-second-tier.1738720/
Two goals in a win: http://www.wochenspiegellive.de/tri...-doppelt-beim-trierer-30-gegen-homburg-37326/
Rugg came on a a sub and scored the only goal in a 1-0 win: Eintracht Trier: Keilmann – Riedel, Dingels, Laux, Mario Müller – Garnier (59. Rugg), Telch, Spang (71. Hammel), Anton (79. Buchner) – Lienhard, Koep Bahlinger SC: Dennis Müller – Wehrle, Buhovac, Adam, Waldraff – Klein, Bührer – Ilhan (79. Sautner), Häringer (88. Göppert), Ulubiev (79. Fiand)– Gaul Tor: 1:0 Rugg (74.) http://www.wochenspiegellive.de/tri...oy-rugg-schiesst-eintracht-zum-10-sieg-37698/
You can see Rugg's tidy finish from a sharp angle here (starts at 4:25): Trier are 2 points out of a promotion playoff spot (to the 3. Liga) with a game in hand. Rugg's former Galaxy team mate, Bryan Gaul, played 90 minutes for the Bahlinger.
Rugg scored his 4th goal in a 1:2 loss to Hoffenheim II midweek. Highlights, where his goal starts at around the 7:30 mark. He came on in the 54th minute. Over the weekend, he faced off against fellow American Matt Taylor's 1. FC Saarbrücken. Taylor started and played 64 minutes and Rugg came on in the 78th minute. Rugg now has 4 goals in 6 games (264 minutes for 1.36 goals per 90 minutes).
Rugg played 90 minutes in Trier's 4-0 win over Hessen Kassel. He assisted on the fourth and final goal of the game: Trier are now in third place, two points out of the promotion playoffs.
http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...ht-trier-gibt-sechsten-neuzugang-bekannt.html He's left Trier for parts unknown.
Soccerway credited him with five goals. The discrepancy is a match against Hessen Kassel; I checked and Trier's website gave Charlie the goal, so let's call it five goals and an assist. All in five starts and seven sub appearances, not bad. After that sort of goals/minute ratio it must have felt like the rugg was pulled out from under him to not be brought back.
Rugg will stay in the Regionalliga Südwest for next season, as he signed with FK Pirmasens back on July 5th. He moves about 100 miles South, not far from the French border. The club finished in 13th place last year, only two points from relegation.
Rugg got a goal and sort of an assist last Friday in a 3-0 win over his former team, Eintracht Trier. He didn't have a great first half the of the season, scoring only 1 goal in 18 games (three starts) but both he and the club appear to be be in good form recently. Charlie has apparently earned a starting spot, having started the last 6 games for the club (they've played 7 since returning from the winter break, and Charlie came on for 32 minutes in their first game back) and has scored 3 goals in his last 4 games. I can't find good info on assists so he may have some assists in there as well. Pirmasens is in 12th on 36 points, two points above the relegation playoff positions. You can find the full game here: His pseudo assist sequence starts at 42:00 and his goal sequence starts at 46:24.
FK Pirmasens, and Charlie Rugg along with them, will be playing in the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar next season after finishing the season in 14th place. It's a bit harsh to end 14th out of 19 teams and still be relegated, but due to both Südwest teams in the promotion playoffs losing, 14th ended up being relegated. Had either team won, I believe Pirmasens would have remained in the Regionalliga. Rugg ended with 4 goals in 31 games (17 starts).
Per T'markt, Rugg is out of contract. It seems like Regionalliga players are usually on one-year deals.
According to this article, Rugg (who is called a key player in the article) has decided to leave Pirmasens following their relegation, which is no surprise. However, the article as a whole is about Pirmasens' displeasure and subsequent appeal to remain in the Regionalliga because Hessen Kassel held their financial problems secret until now, which will result in a 9 point penalty for them to start with next season. Had Hessen Kassel been deducted 9 points for their insolvency in the 2016/17 season, they would have been relegated instead of Pirmasens. Last year, a similar thing happened for Offenbach (who played this season with a nine point penalty), and such the league ended up playing with 19 teams instead of 18 rather than relegating another team. Given this precedent, they want the Regionalliga Südwest to operate with 20 teams next year, including Pirmasens as the extra team. I have no idea if they have a case or not (any I don't speak much German so pretty much it's just what I can glean from google translate) but perhaps if the appeal is accepted, we might see Charlie play for Pirmasens after all next year. Also, here's another article from June 2nd saying that he left the club.
I think Rugg retired after leaving Pirmasens. If you check out his IG, though, it looks like he's a seriously talented painter.
