Another successful day for the Canadian men. With no Kaye we started the game extremely thin in central midfield. Piette was playing well and i thought he put himself in harms way when he put his body between the player and ball. Probably wasn't expecting that much of a lunge but he's probably done for the cycle. Atiba had to go the distance and Fraser made a massive contribution with the bullet pass to JD. Atiba needs Sunday off so we need Kaye or Eustaquio...or both. Arfield would come in handy now.

I don't think we are over achieving with our current squad. Given our performance in WCQ so far, I doubt anyone who is paying attention is underrating our players anymore, although I don't imagine most people outside of CONCACAF are paying much attention yet. For me a bigger question is how sustainable this is. I'm delighted that we're on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup and I'm eager to see us push it through the final steps. I don't want this WCQ performance to be just a one-time, "golden generation" kind of thing but rather the emphatic emergence of a third perennial powerhouse in CONCACAF. I'm not sure if he's already on your radar, but fellow Canadian Julian Dunn is also now at HamKam.
Davies, David, Buchanan, Eustaquio, Miller, Millar, Corbeanu, Johnston & Larin - just to name those have at least 2 cycles in them and aren't in their prime yet. CPL will be producing the bulk of the next wave of players, starting with depth to eventually produce elites that will be productive at higher level. The league's long term plan is to have at least 50% of the National Team that played in CPL at one point. With the league expanding, potential emergence of a 2nd Division and reforms at D3, the best is yet to come. I think I had previously reported that but that's great to have to young Canadian developing on the same club in Norway - which has a very underrated league
Yes, although referencing specific players is exactly what's meant by a "golden generation", no? I'm hoping we'll also see the next David and Buchannan arise - guys who nobody had heard of two years ago who are suddenly locked in NT starters. I think that's very doable. Seventeen of the 26 players on the roster for the current WCQ window have played or do play in MLS, most of them with just the three Canadian teams. The CPL should eventually have several times that number of teams so it's quite reasonable that a large percentage of future NT players will have a CPL stint on their resume. What I think is going to surprise people is how long it will actually take for us to see CPL alumni making more than cameo appearances on the NT. When the three MLS teams started, I believed they would quickly send new talent to the NT. Instead, it took a long time for those young players to filter up that far. (Even now there are MLS NT member like Piette or Cavallini who play in MLS but weren't developed there. For financial reasons, the CPL isn't going to have those sorts of guys to bolster its numbers; they're going to have to wait until today's kids make it all the way up.) I'd actually be surprised if many of the players (or any regular starters at all) on our 2026 WC team have CPL experience. I think it will be the 2030 WC team before we truly see the full benefits of all the D3 and CPL work that's going on today.

Milan Borjan had a disappointing end to his Champions League season. After a 3-2 away loss at Maccabi Haifa of Israel, Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade, hereafter RSB) scored twice to take the aggregate lead. In the 45+4th, Borjan saved a penalty kick, but Maccabi Haifa scored the rebound to tie the aggregate. It stayed that way until the 90th, when Maccabi Haifa took a free kick that made an own goal off an RSB player who was subbed on in the 78th. The game was 2-2, and Maccabi Haifa won the aggregate 5-4. RSB will be in Pot 1 for the Europa League Group Stage.
