So, any hints as to what might happen? The US press is treating it as if Trudeau is on the ropes and will be "fighting off" the Conservatives from making big gains..
https://newsinteractives.cbc.ca/elections/federal/2021/results/ There's the results thus far (not far on at all). I think the Maritimes started off first, FWIW. At this post, Libs 3, Tories 1, all else 0 (NDP leading 1 riding, formerly 2).
I’m getting the feeling that unless there is a “big” swing in late voting the Cons flipped a few seats in the Maritimes.
CBC, AFP have announced a Trudeau win. CBC projects Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party will hang on to government in national election.— Josh Caplan (@joshdcaplan) September 21, 2021
Same for Global… but they are predicting a Minority government… so $600 million down the drain to end up pretty much where they were before..
Bring up a Canadian news website. You may think that is the current election results, but it is pretty much the pre-election number as well.
Canadian drama!! The PPC, a populist party, had their election night party in Saskatoon because Saskatoon didn’t have any mask mandates and PPC is opposed to mask mandates. Well, unfortunately for them, Saskatoon issued a mask mandate today, but a number of PPC members refused to wear masks.
Those were current at the time of the post, but I had to tend to IRL stuff. But yeah. Trudeau. Minority. 18 mo.?
Still is the case. Liberals -1 Conservatives 0 Bloc Quebecois 0 NDP +3 Green -1 Independent -1 I heard on Global that even tho the numbers didn’t really change, 35 ridings changed hands. of course, in the time it took me to type the above, Lins are now +1 BQ is -1, and NDP is +2 In other news, Conservatives actually won the popular vote, PPC is now eligible for televised debates in the next election and the Greens are not.
thank Christ our elections are over quickly. what a fukking waste of time and money that was. edit: FWIW imo O'Toole screwed up, big time by doing complete 180's on a couple of initial pledges (a) free party vote on abortion, and (b) fed government employee vax mandates / air flight mask mandates. as soon as I heard him do that I thought "you're screwed". talk about going backwards. the Libs had a very effective add to that effective, riffing off his "We're taking Canada back!" slogan (which itself of course sounded WAY too much like a MAGA echo)
So far.. The bigger winner on this is ... the companies that create and publish election material? Obviously counting is still ongoing, but so far the parties are up or down only a few seats.
Canada is trying to outdo us down here in the lower 48 with their tomfoolery! Whether it’s pandemic-related safety measures or pandemic-related inflation, much of the rising costs can be attributed to the still-problematic spread of the virus. Elections Canada says those single-use pencils — an anomaly compared to previous years when they were reused — tolled at least over $430,000 alone. That’s because 16,000,000 golf-size pencils and 3,650,000 larger pencils for accessibility requirements were procured for this federal election. And each one cost $0.0137 and $0.0598, respectively. On top of that, plexiglass barriers installed on booths bore the price of $3,784,319. Still, many other levies and fees — related or unrelated to pandemic precautions — are unaccounted for.
Canada has a LONG way to go before catching up to the US on election tomfoolery. That being said, what a massive miscalculation by Trudeau on this. While he refused to admit getting a clear majority was why he called the snap election, there's no other reason he would have done so.. Particularly when you consider that up until a few days ago, they were thinking the Conservatives had a chance to lead a minority government.
