I’ve put this thread together because we just have so many different threads for the draft. I was aiming to consolidate them all in a kind of reference thread to make it easier for others to follow, and unclutter it all. If you want anything added, PM me.

It's the end of the world as we know it... Aliens are coming to destroy the earth. However, they've decided to start an Earth museum that will contain 10 of earth's greatest buildings. Incidentally, they also have the ability to recreate structures from ruins and restore them to their original glory... but mythological buildings and those with too little remaining to recreate can't be done.

by Nicodemus and Norsk Troll

Rather than offering running commentary on every pick, as is being done in the Album Thread, for instance, we intend to refrain (for the most part) from commenting until the draft is complete, so as not to influence the shape of the draft itself. However, we wanted to post this statement to give you an idea of what we would expect to see on your lists.

Regarding the nature of architecture
There will be disagreement between the judges, obviously, as to the relative merits of buildings, and also to the relative importance of various elements of architecture. But in general, the elements we will be judging will include:

aesthetics: First and foremost, a building is seen by more people than will ever work or live inside, so the exterior aesthetics are important – an architect owes something not just to the end-user, but to the rest of the world that has to look at. That consideration must include not just the building itself, but its surroundings. But a building also cannot exist merely as a large free-standing sculpture. The aesthetics should not stop at the front door, leaving the interior to look no better than your local community college. Design and materials are as important on the inside as on the outside (though admittedly, they are more subject to change by the end-user).

purpose: We feel the building must have a purpose, and not exist solely because someone wanted to erect a fancy structure. Furthermore, we would like to see some variety in each list as to purpose – if you select 10 religious buildings, no matter how great each is individually, you will probably not win this draft.

functionality: How well does the building meet it’s purpose? This will not necessarily be the most important trait for this draft, since building purposes will often change, or users will sacrifice certain efficiencies for the alternative benefits of aesthetics or importance. Furthermore, it is often difficult to gauge how well a building actually serves its purpose without personal experience. For example, telephone call centers seem to serve the purpose of the owner very well – maximum personnel crammed into minimum space where rents are cheapest. But the purpose of the worker may not be served at all – dreary, deadening space that numbs the mind and body. Nevertheless, important architectural innovations that serve or amplify function will definitely receive the credit they are due.

importance: Call this the X-Factor. Perhaps a building has survived thousands of years, or has served millions of people, or has entered the cultural consciousness of society, or was merely central to a society or era, such that they building has taken on an importance that is not attributable to its aesthetics, purpose or function. Yet that importance remains palpable, and will be considered by the judges.

Regarding the nature of the time capsule concept for aliens
Unlike a sports draft, there won’t be dozens of teams competing. When all is said and done, there will be but one remaining team of buildings, and that group is what will be offered up to the aliens as evidence of what humanity had to offer. When thinking about what you want to leave for the aliens, do not be trapped by thinking “well, X was incredibly influential and therefore should be included”. With reference to the album draft, Album X may have started a new trend and influenced 50 later bands, but those 50 bands are not going to be included in the time capsule - so the alien only sees Album X and will only see how it stands on its own, in a vacuum, without reference to all that came later (or before), other than the other selections you have made. So although Album X may have started the trend, but Album Z was actually the best culmination of that trend, you’d be better off with Album Z. Similarly, something may have had an enormous influence on architecture, but if the influence was ultimately a bad thing (using another album reference) – such as the creation of heavy metal, then that may not be something you want to include. These picks must be able to stand on their own, since everything else will be gone.

Final note – if any of you really want to limit this list to buildings you have actually visited (this is, after all, a travel forum), you will probably be limiting yourself too severely to win this draft, unless you are an extreme globe-trotter.
