Seems Brian is returning to England to play in some FA cup matches. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18534739 Seems the team is 9th level and is filming a documentary.
He has a freakin' pub named after him at Craven Cottage. As far as I'm concerned that's like Knighthood and should circumvent a work permit!!!!
This is the most farcical thing I've read in the world of soccer. (EDIT: That doesn't have to do with FIFA.)
This: "The north London side have hired David Seaman as goalkeeping coach" They'll go out in the first round.
Neat idea, kind of a footballing reality show. The team sounds like what Wynalda did with Cal FC with star power. I'd love to see Cletus get into the side. Although I have a feeling he is somewhat short of match fitness lately. Anyone seen him or heard what he has been up to recently?
Technically, going out in the 1st round woud be a magnificent acheivement. Going by last year's competition, they'd actually have to win 6 games to make the first round. Last year they kicked off with a 2-1 win at Ascot United in the Extra Preliminary Round, although that was watched by a remarkable 1149 people. That might not sound like a lot, but Ascot Utd, whose ground is located within the grounds of Ascot Racecourse, are usually watched by about 40 people. The game was chosen to be shown live on the internet, and this fad caused the ground to be beseiged by anorak-clad groundhoppers. The static electricity off their clothing alone was enough to power two of the floodlights. After beating Ardley 2-1 in the Preliminary Round, a 1st Qualifying round defeat at Hanworth Villa, in front of a more modest crowd of 80, saw them bow out. If it pans at ok, Wembley FC could make enough out of this to pay their entire running costs for the season, if not longer, so it makes sense. The players seem to be on a hiding to nothing though, as defeat would be rather embarrassing.
Good to hear from you again. Reading looking at any Yanks? Bolded statement above is pretty important- it's a real stretch for these "old" players. Have to wonder if they will start downplaying their role from the start.
Could be aired in the US, as it's ESPN who's doing it. "The all-star line-up has been made possible thanks to the support of FA Cup lead sponsors Budweiser, and the FA Cup journey will be filmed by ESPN for a show called ‘Dream. On. The Journey of Wembley’."
It depends. With the football at that level, it's not so much "the beautiful game" as "the game with a face only a mother could love". English football might have some depth, but when you get down to the country's 739th best team, bottoms of barrels are being scraped.
739 isn't all that bad in the grand scheme of things - the regular German league pyramid has 60000 teams in it that could theoretically qualify for the German cup, excluding youth or pub teams and all.
I wonder if the other lower-level teams mind that the competition sponsor (Budweiser) is also helping one of the participants field a bunch of ringers.
