<sigh> Go mainstream media, way to perfect that rectal-cranial inversion.
    -----------------------------------

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Taylor Twellman scored his league-leading 13th goal in the 52nd minute on Saturday night to give the New England Revolution a 1-1 tie with the San Jose Earthquakes.

Western Conference-leading San Jose (10-3-7) took a 1-0 lead on Brian Ecklund's first goal of the season in the 23rd minute.

New England (5-7-8) remained winless in its last eight games (0-3-5) despite outshooting the Earthquakes 15-5 and having a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Twellman scored after teammate Wolde Harris collected the ball deep in San Jose territory. It was the first goal against Earthquake goalie Pat Onstad in 398 minutes.

Ecklund put San Jose ahead when he knocked a 25-yard free kick to the left of goalkeeper Adin Brown.

San Jose midfielder Brian Ching suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon during the first half.

The match was delayed 26 minutes at the beginning of the second overtime period by a severe lightning storm that prompted Gillette Stadium security personnel to evacuate spectators from their seats.

It's embarassing that the version of the SF Chronicle I get out here in the boondocks had it wrong, too.

I agree. Cut him and bring in Ronnie Ekelund.

Maybe our team should be like that Monty Python sketch where everyone was called "Bruce." In our case, we have Brian Mullan, Brian Ching...now Brian Ekelund.

I can just see FY at the first meeting with any new acquisition..."that name of yours is going to be a little confusing. Mind if we just call you Brian to keep it straight?"

...and picture the lineup card in the locker room:

    Starting XI:

    Brian

    Brian, Brian, Brian, Brian

    Brian, Brian, Brian, Brian

    Brian, Brian

Why are you guys being so hard on Brian?

He suffered a complete rupture of his right achilles tendon and still had the pressence of mind to score his first goal of the year with his right foot.

    That takes serious talent. ;)

    Too funny!!!

On a serious note, though, and segue to the Brian Ching thread...Get well soon, Chinger! We're thinking about you!

Right-o, Spartacus. However, given the Aussie origin, shouldn't that be "Good evening, SHEELAS AND BRUCES?"

Don't forget the first month of the season's stadium "Freekick" program that read "#9, Brian Mulrooney" under Richard's picture in the team roster section.

    Re: Re: Brian Ecklund (R)

Maybe Spartacus would be better off announcing it as "welcome ladies and Brians."

Well, since they have the same name, I hope Brian is as good as Richie? Any idea when he'll show for the team? :)

Well, with a Canadian coach, keeper, and forward, and a half-Canadian superstar, why not sign Canada's former prime minister?

You mean Brian Mulroney (it's pronounced the same as Richard's name). I'd say no, we've got enough Brians as it is right now.:)

Actually, I was just reminded of that Looney Tunes classic "Baseball Bugs"...

    "Now here's the starting lineup:
    First Base - Bugs Bunny
    Second Base - Bugs Bunny
    Shortstop - Bugs Bunny
    Third Base - Bugs Bunny
    Left Field - Bugs Bunny
    Center Field - Bugs Bunny
    Right Field - Bugs Bunny
    Catcher - Bugs Bunny
    Pitcher - Bugs Bunny"
