Creating this thread today since the match-ups for matchday 1 have been released: https://www.uol.com.br/esporte/fute...sileirao-2023-veja-confrontos-da-1-rodada.htm These are the matches for the first weekend - April 15, 16 and 17 Flamengo x Coritiba Botafogo x São Paulo Palmeiras x Cuiabá Corinthians x Cruzeiro RB Bragantino x Bahia Atlético-MG x Vasco da Gama Grêmio x Santos Athletico-PR x Goiás Fortaleza x Internacional América-MG x Fluminense Is it Palmeiras and Flamengo and then 18 more? Atlético-MG and Corinthians could be solid. Fluminense will be looking to build on what they did last year here and in the Libertadores. Grêmio have Luís Suarez who has been great so far, will he be the artilheiro?
The clubs are trying to change the relegation rules starting already in 2023. They want to decrease the number of relegated/promotion teams from 4 to 3. On one hand, I think it makes sense. All the big leagues in Europe have 3 teams relegated / promoted. On the other hand, it's obvious that the "big teams" are tired of being relegated and are looking to improve their chance to stay in Serie A. It doesn't go unnoticed that this season, all of those "big clubs" are in Serie A. Another change is that starting now (Brasileirão and CdB), clubs will be allowed to call up 7 foreign players for a game instead of 5.
Calling up 7 instead of 5 foreigners..... Isn't it bad for the brazil players especially the youth.... That their spots are taken? How do you see this change?
On its own, it's a negative for player development. However, the sheer number of clubs in Brazil partially makes up for that, as does the fact players leave so early now. However, it would be better to implement a decision like this in conjunction with other decisions defining goals for or promoting youth development.
Now that what is effectively the pre-season in Brazil has wrapped up (who cares about Estaduais anyways!) it's time to start counting down to the first round of the Brasileirão. Saturday, 4pm Brazil time Palmeiras kicks off the league versus Cuiabá.
With the new season of course comes a new Cartola season for anyone interested: https://cartola.globo.com/#!/home
Renato Gaucho talking a big game at Gremio. Putting a target on his back. Lets see what Suarez can do in the Brasileirão. Not ragging on Suarez, I am a big fan of him ... but the competition in the Gauchão is pretty meh.
If rumors are to be believed, VP should be out today and Flamengo are looking into Tite and Sampaoli. Sampaoli could be a complete disaster IMO.
Renato Gaúcho just can't help himself can he? I think Suárez can have a big season, at least numberswise, regardless of how Grêmio do, but we'll see. All day today was "VP will be fired" but it looks like it won't be announced until tomorrow at the earliest. Likeliest replacement depends on which journalist you trust most. JJ, Coudet? Palmeiras look like they will be without Veiga and Rony for a little bit. I had Veiga in my Cartola team initially but lucklily moved him before the news. Actually, I don't think it matters when I moved him, as long as it was in time for the first match.
The best coach for Flamengo IMO would ironically be Diniz. Not kidding. Coudet looked like was out at Atlético yesterday but that doesn't seem certain now. Tite's name was floated around buy people close to him say he isn't coaching this year unless it's a big opportunity overseas. He turned down some big money offer from South Korea NT. Rony is out for 45 days. He actually played the final with a broken arm. Veiga will be out (not sure how long) and Atuesta is injured as well. We will have problems in midfield for sure. I don't know how much we can ride Veiga this season. Not having Scarpa definitely hurts given how he stepped up last season.
It was finally made official today. No replacement yet though. Flamengo has a Copa do Brasil match Thursday and their opening Brasileirão match is Sunday. Honestly, there are plenty of coaches who can give us a shot at Libertadores and/or Brasileirão considering our resources, but who knows what this administration will do.
The word is that Landim needs to make it look like they legitimately went for JJ and were turned down. But they know JJ will only consider coming in 2 months and he is in the run for the Turkish League and in the SF of the Cup with good chance of winning it. Then Landim can tell the fans he tried again and was denied. Sampaoli seems to be in the pole position for the job. He owns a place in Rio and had interest in the job back 2-3 years ago. That's if all these rumors can be trusted.
At least I get something out of it with him in my cartola team.
With Sampaoli taking over after today Flamengos's win means Mario Jorge will have a 100% record this year... if we keep our coach. Of course in Copa do Brasil he has a 0% record... At least he got the players to show up and put in effort today. Great goal by Ayrton Lucas, Gabi scored on a PK and Pedro came in off the bench to score a beautiful goal. Bruno Henrique played his first minutes since knee surgery too and looked ok. Gremio x Santos close out the round with the last match right now. Midweek is Libertadores and next weekend is round 2. This is the first time in years that all 4 big Rio teams won in the same round and the first time ever that they all won in the opening round!
After the 1st round, 2 managers have already been fired. Ceni and Antonio Oliveria (Coritba). I am not one to use the saying "only in Brazil" ... but managers being fired after the 1st game of the league might be something very unique to Brazil. The only context that makes it make some sense is that season doesn't start with the Brasileirão, it starts with the State leagues. And by the time Brasileirão comes around, there is already some coaches being pressured by their State league campaigns.
Reportedly SP were decided on firing Ceni before this week's Sulamericana match. Like you said about the context, that makes all the difference. After all, VP also was fired in the week prior to the first match of the Brasileirão. It's almost like there's no fresh start in Brazil which just exacerbates the problem of this game of musical chairs for coaches. Reportedly Dorival may replcae Ceni, still not confirmed though.
Poor Dorival. The guy took Flamengo midway through the season while they were struggling to Libertadores and CdB titles and instead of his stock going up, he might end up coaching São Paulo who have little prospect due to their lack of financial resources.
I will never understand meu querido Mengao not doing whatever necessary to hold on to Dorival back then. Since Dorival left the team has been in huge decline. Let’s see what Samp does.
