A thread about the Reserves (the Ressies)!

Blackpool FC Reserves compete in the Pontins Holidays League Division One West.

Teams in Division One West for the 2007-08 season are (with the league the first team play in for the current season in brackets):

    Accrington Stanley (League Two)
    Blackpool (The Championship)
    Burnley (The Championship)
    Bury (League Two)
    Carlisle United (League One)
    Chester City (League Two)
    Manchester City (The Premiership) (*)
    Morecambe (League Two)
    Preston North End (The Championship)
    Rochdale (League Two)
    Tranmere Rovers (League One)
    Wrexham (League Two)

(*) Manchester City is their Academy team, not their reserve team who play in the Premier League Reserves.

Blackpool Reserves do not play their home games at Bloomfield Road. Starting with the 2006-07 season they now play home games at local non-league club, Fleetwood Town Highbury Avenue stadium.

Blackpool ended 2007 on 18th December with a 2-0 away win over Wrexham held at Buckely Towns ground. Attendance: 59

The Blackpool team for the game was:

    Rhys Evans (*)
    Scott Metcalfe
    Danny Coid (*)
    Matt Lawlor
    Ashton Bayliss
    Marcus Bean (*)
    Adrian Forbes (*)
    Scott Vernon (*)
    Phil Marsh
    Matty Kay
    John Hills (*)

    Subs:
    Kyle Clancy
    Stefan Laird
    Ross Lloyd
    Danny Mitcheley
    Dominic Merella

Players marked (*) are First Team squad players who usually get only on the bench or just the 17 for first team matches. The rest are made up of Youth team and Reserve team players.

Youth team striker, Danny Mitchely, only came on in the 77th minute when the game was 0-0. He scored in the 82nd minute and three minutes later won a penalty which he got up and scored.

Blackpool are currently in 2nd place in the league table, right behind PKE.

PKE 23 points from 12 games
Blackpool 18 points from 10 games (won 5 drawn 3 lost 2) Goal for: 22 Goals against: 12

The Ressies next scheduled match is a home match against Burnley on Wednesday 9th January at 7.00pm.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

Tonight the Reserves are playing (right now) Preston North End reserves at home (at Fleetwood Towns Highbury Avenue ground).

Blackpool are currently in second place in the Division One West league with 18 points from 10 games, 5 points behind PKE who have played two more games.

Blackpool put out a strong line-up:

    Gerrard (*)
    Coid (*)
    Eastham
    Bayliss
    Tierney (**)
    Wiles (**)
    Southern (*)
    Bean (*)
    Hills (*)
    Marsh
    Parker (*)

    Subs:
    Kay
    Halstead
    Merella
    Mitchley
    Metcalfe

    (*) First team squad players
(**) Two players who have recently come back from loans at other clubs

Oh and in the scum team was expected to be former 'Pool favourite Brett Ormerod.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

    From the match report -

"Brett Ormerod, John Hills and Danny Coid on the same pitch.
If you closed your eyes it felt like the Millennium Stadium, May 2001, when all three combined to devastating effect and seal a famous Blackpool play-off victory over Leyton Orient.

Actually, that last statement is not quite true. No matter how much you closed your eyes it didn't feel like that glorious day in Cardiff.

For starters it's a damn sight colder in late January than it is in May, and another difference is that the crowd gathered at Fleetwood's Highbury Avenue last night wasn't 50,000.

It was 237 and that included a border collie which had sneaked its way in (without paying I might add) and spent the majority of the 90 minutes relieving itself on a wooden panel at the far end of the ground.

The dog missed most of the action, which is a pity because the footballing fare on offer was, if not quite of Millennium Stadium vintage, still fairly entertaining."

Apparently Keigan Parker played well as did other players on the fringe of the first team squad and with there being a number of scouts from other clubs maybe one or two players still might leave before the midnight deadline tonight.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

The Ressies were in action this evening and apparently won 4-2 at Tranmere Rovers with the 'Pool goals coming from an OG, Andt Welsh, Danny Mitchley (yet again! He has been a "goal machine" for the Youth team and when played the Ressies this season. And he had only been on the pitch for 5 minutes as a sub when he scored tonight!) and the 4th goal from Ashton Bayliss.

So back to winning ways after recently losing the last two matches at home to PKE and away at Accrington.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

The Ressies kick-off the new season on Wednesday 20th August at home to Manchester City.

The match is at Highbury Avenue, Fleetwood, the home of Fleetwood Town and both Blackpool and Fleetwood Town season ticket holders can go to the match for free on production of their season tickets.

Kick-off is 2pm according to the Fleetwood Town official site, though I'm sure it was supposed to be 7pm. Highbury Avenue now has another two new stands - a new 650 seater West Stand and a 2,000 terraced North Stand to add to the Percy Ronson stand at the south end of the ground which is terraced and holds about 1,300. They have plans for a 2,000 seater stand at the east of the ground too. It is starting to look like a tidy little stadium.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

Indeed not! Usually the games are a 7pm kick-off with some games at 2pm I think down to the quality of the floodlights at Highbury Avenue. However, I'm sure they have installed new floodlights this season so don't see why it would kick-off at 2pm. Just have to hope it is an error on the Fleetwood site and that it does kick-off at 7pm!

If I get there I will try and get some pictures and post them up to give some idea of the stadium!

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

It had kicked off at 2pm LOL

According to reports we lost 3-1. However, we also had to play 60 minutes a player down as Alex John-Baptiste was sent off on 29 minutes.

We took the lead through Steve Kabba, they equalised before scoring two quick goals late on.

I just hope Kabba gets his chance on Saturday against Sheffield United. He is a former United player where he did well.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

Tomorrow 3rd September at 7pm, the Reserves are in action again as they take on PKE away at Irongate, the home of Bamber Bridge FC.

Bamber Bridge is a village to the south of Preston (and not far from the tow towns of Leyland and Chorley. Some Leyland & Chorley Seasiders hopefully will be there then! :D )

With the first team in the middle of the international break and therefore having no game this coming Saturday, the Reserves are expected to have a strong line-up unlike last weeks game awat to Bury which mostly had youth team players!

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

Well I'm glad I didn't go anywhere near Bamber Bridge last night. A few Blackpool fans did go, and with PKE fielding a more inexperienced team, they must have thought Blackpool would win comfortably when early on Stuart Green curled in a free-kick to take the lead. But instead, PKE scored seven unanswered goals! Gulp. Bad enough they lost by such a score but doing so to PKE isn't good.

Reserve team manager, Steve Thompson, said of the performance, "I was embarrassed and we gave those involved in the team some home truths after the game. The things that were said will remain in the dressing room, but I can tell you myself, Tony (*) and the gaffer (Grayson) will not accept performances like that from anyone connected with to the club, whether they are experienced professionals or scholars. The performance was totally unacceptable."

With seven first team squad players in the team, and of course without having been there, it does seem as though they just didn't put in any real effort at all, which if so, is disgusting. They should have been using the match to try and win themselves a place at least in the first team match day squad, for the Barnsley game. At least next week the Reserves (whatever team is put out) will have a chance to redeem themselves. Even though it was just a Reserves match and of no real consequence, to lose by such a huge margin when we had seven first team squad players and they had a relatively inexperienced team, means that today PKE fans are gloating, and with many Blackpool and PKE fans working together, it also means lots of mickey taking.

And oddly enough tomorrow is the reverse fixture with the Reserves facing PKE at home. Kick-off 7pm at Highbury Avenue stadium, Fleetwood. Blackpool are expected to include Matthew Gilks, Joe Martin, Alex John-Baptiste and Stuart Green in their line up.

Good news that Martin is back playing.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

    Team news

Striker Daniel Nardiello is set to start what will be only his second game in a tangerine shirt tonight after his summer signing. He will be looking to do well this evening and be able to work his way into contention for the first team on Saturday against Barnsley, the club where he really made his name. Joe Martin also makes a welcome return to action. And Alex John-Baptiste comes back after his one match ban.

The Reserves under Steve Thompson are looking to get their first points of the season and make amends for the dreadful showing last week.

    'Pool line up

    Matthew Gilks
    Ross Lloyd
    Joe Martin
    Alex John-Baptiste
    Ashley Eastham
    Matty Kay
    Dominic Merella
    Daniel Nardiello
    Lewis Almond
    Stuart Green
    Billy McKenna

So a line-up that is nowhere near as strong as that which lost 7-1 last week, just hope they can perform better. No idea what is happening with Michael D'Agostino at present as he hasn't featured at all for the last few weeks.

    Re: Blackpool FC Reserves

    Blackpool 2 PKE 0

The Reserves won their first match of the season with goals from Daniel Nardiello and Dominic Merella.

Before the match, and with seven of the starting 11 involved in last weeks debacle at Bamber Bridge, the coach Steve Thompson's pre-match talk consisted of standing in the middle of the dressing room with a piece of paper on which was written "Preston 7 Blackpool 1" :D

It seemed to work then! Just like last week, and in front of a decent crowd at Fleetwood, Blackpool took the lead after twenty minutes with Nardiello scoring after a ball from Merella.

Unlike last week however, PKE didn't get to score a goal. Their keeper was stratchered off late in the first half with a suspected broken leg. Blackpool continued to dominate in the second half and their deserved second goal came on 54 minutes when Merella scored after good build up by Nardiello and Ross Lloyd.

Hopefully a sign of things to come with Nardiello, scoring two minutes into the game, a repeat on Saturday wouldn't go amiss!
