Suggested best XI 1913-14 (2-3-5): Hardy - Crompton, De Vecchi - Gordon, Thomson, O'Connell - Lacey, McMenemy, Sophus Nielsen, Schlosser, Donnachie.
Here are my nominees for this season. 23 Man Shortlist Craig, Alexander IRL Morton Crompton, Robert ENG Blackburn Rovers De Vecchi, Renzo ITA Genoa Donnachie, Joseph SCO Oldham Athletic Elliot, George ENG Middlesbrough Gallacher, Patrick IRL Celtic Gordon, James SCO Rangers Hardy, Samuel ENG Aston Villa Harris, Valentine IRL Everton Holley, George ENG Sunderland Lacey, William IRL Liverpool Latheron, Edward ENG Blackburn Rovers McConnell, William IRL Bohemians McMenemy, James SCO Celtic McNair, Alexander SCO Celtic Middelboe, Nils DEN Kjøbenhavns Boldklub / Chelsea Nielsen, Sophus DEN B.K. Frem / Kiel O'Connell, Patrick IRL Hull City Schlosser, Imre HUN Ferencváros Shaw, Charles SCO Celtic Shea, Daniel ENG Blackburn Rovers Thompson, Frank IRL Clyde Thomson, Charles SCO Sunderland I have chosen seven Irishmen, some of them playing in rather obscure clubs, but they won the British Home Championships. The majority of players still comes from the British Isles, because of the shortage of alternatives. The tours of British clubs in 1913 and 1914 showed they were still better then their Continental opponents. Barcelona, apparently the best Spanish team, could not even overcome Crook Town in three matches at home. In 1914 they lost all three matches at home against Notts County. The tour of Exeter showed even a Southern League Club was better than teams from the Argentine league. I see no reason to include an Argentine player this season. Previous posters have occasionally included Alberto Ohaco even in the Top 3 (apparently, because he was top goalscorer in these years in Argentina), but this season he had just one cap without goals. He could not score in the national team next year, either. Based on national team statistics, the best player from Uruguay was Lucio Gorta (3 goals in 5 caps), far ahead of Piendibene. But Gorta is not well known, not even his club is known to me. Friedenreich may have played well in the match against Exeter, but the Brazil national team did not play this season, and was regarded a class below Argentina or Uruguay. Top 3: 1. Crompton, Robert ENG Blackburn Rovers 2. Hardy, Samuel ENG Aston Villa 3. McMenemy, James SCO Celtic
It is curious how some sources agree to highlight the figure of Ohaco. Win the Argentine title with 11 wins and a draw in 12 games, scoring a total of 20 goals (including 4 to Boca Juniors), which makes him top scorer of that championship. Schlosser lowers its scoring production with both the Hungarian team and Ferencvaros; However, he remains the top scorer of the championship. Regarding Sophus Nielsen, I have not been able to verify too much data. However, his compatriot, Poul Nielsen signs spectacular records. Win the Danish championship (I have not been able to find out the number of goals) and with respect to the Danish national team: play 4 games, win them all and score 14 goals! In my modest opinion, if only with this data, it seems more appropriate than Sophus to be part of the top 23.
Thanks for your suggestions. The problem is we do not have descriptions of individual matches from contemporary sources outside the British Isles. I cannot speak Spanish, perhaps you should investigate why some sources agree to highlight the figure of Ohaco. I do not know the contemporary sources, only the opinion of some forum members from recent years. Perhaps they just took a look at this goalscoring records. However, as I mentioned in my previous post, Argentina and Spain was still way below the British standards in 1914. I have the same problem with Danish. Poul Nielsen indeed scored many goals in the national team this season. However, 10 of his goals came against the rather weak German and Swedish sides in matches when Sophus Nielsen did not play (I do not know why). Still, if other posters agree, we could move him into the Top 23, but then we have to remove a British player. Possible candidates to remove include Gallacher, Latheron, Holley, or perhaps some of the Irishmen, McConnell or Thompson.
Ohaco was leading goalscorer in the Argentine AAF championship four years running from 1912 to 1915. However he was only selected twice by the national team up to July 1915. One of those occasions was during the August 1913 to July 1914 timeframe when Argentina played four matches. Argentina played 17 games between 1912 and July 1915, during which time the Argentine selectors do not appear to have rated Ohaco very highly. He played more regularly for the national team from 1916 but was never again the leading league goalscorer. Sophus Nielsen scored 72 goals in 18 matches for Holstein Kiel in Germany between 1913 and 1915. He was considered a better all-round footballer than his namesake Poul, who was more of a specialist goalscorer operating against variable opposition. In the Top 23 Poul "Tist" Nielsen might replace one of the British players mentioned. Personally I would keep the Irishmen McConnell and Thompson, who were key men in Ireland's historic winning of the Home International Championship.
Impressive the average of Sophus Nielsen. The truth is that I could not find too much information about this player. In fact, only the data in the national team. I would be very interested in knowing if there is any website where you can increase this information. Regarding Ohaco, the sources I referred to are those of other colleagues who also collaborate in this forum, since I have not yet been able to find out, for example, the reason why I did not participate with the Argentine national team during these years. Thank you.
In a special issue of "El Gráfico" this brief mention is made of Alberto Ohaco, in which it is clarified that this player stood out, fundamentally, as a club player. In any case, it should be clarified that during the years 1913 and 1914, very few were the players who had continuity in the national team. In fact, between one match and the next, the changes in the lineups were majority. Ohaco, in particular, played his second international match in August 1913, in the match in which Argentina won by 4 to 0 to Uruguay and in which Susán scored the 4 goals, the referee being his own brother ; It took exactly two years before he played his third game with Argentina.
