FK Željezničar is a football club from Bosnia and Herzegovina, playing in the capital, Sarajevo. The initial acronym stands for Fudbalski sportski klub (meaning "Football Club"), and the name Željezničar means "railway worker", given because it was established by a group of railway workers. Željezničar, alias 'Željo', is historically one of the most prominent and successful football teams in Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the time of the former Yugoslavia, FK Željezničar was a member of the Yugoslav First League. Today, Željezničar is one of the most famous members of the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its success includes winning one Championship in former Yugoslavia and four titles in Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The biggest European result was UEFA Cup semi-final in 1984-1985 season.
FK Sarajevo, is a professional football club based in Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia-Herzegovina and is one of the most popular clubs in the country. Founded on October 24, 1946, the club was the most successful club from SR Bosnia and Herzegovina in former Yugoslavia, winning two First League titles and finishing 6th in that competition's all-time table.[2] Today, FK Sarajevo is one of the most prominent members of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Premier League, where it has won one Premier League championship and four Cups.
The Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the top football league in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the country's most prestigious level of football competition currently contested by 16 clubs with last two teams relegated at the end of every season. The winner of the Premier League is seeded into the Champions League 2nd Round. The winner of the Football Cup of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Premier League runners up go to the 2nd round of Europa League and the third placed team goes to the 1st round of Europa League At the end of the season last two teams are relegated, and winners of First League of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and First League of Republika Srpska are promoted to Premier League. The league is operated by the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1998 and 2000, the champion was decided after a play-off between Bosnian and Croatian clubs. In 2001, a national league started for the first time, with Serbian clubs refusing to take part in the first two league seasons, eventually joining in 2002. Notable Performances in Europe In the qualifiers for the UEFA Champions League season 2002/03, Željezničar gained the greatest success in Bosnian post-war club-football so far, going all the way to the last qualifying round for the most important club competition in Europe. After big wins over ÍA Akraness and Lillestrøm SK, Maniacs were held from Newcastle United. In the first match in Newcastle the result was 4-1 for Newcastle, and in Sarajevo it was 1-0 for the guests. The second time a Bosnian club moved into the last qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League was FK Sarajevo in 2007/08, when they lost to Dynamo Kyiv 0-4 on aggregate, after going over Maltese Marsaxlokk and Belgian side Genk. Another remarkable season for Bosnian clubs in Europe was 2009/10. The most memorable performances were marked by FK Sarajevo and FK Slavija. While Slavija surprisingly beat Aalborg BK in the Second Qualifying round but couldn't overcome MFK Košice in the third round, FK Sarajevo was able to reach the Play-Offs for the Group Stage of the newly formed UEFA Europa League after beating FC Spartak Trnava and Helsingborgs IF. However, they lost there unhappily 3-2 on aggregate to CFR Cluj.
Re: Premijer Liga My predictions for the season: 1. Zeljeznicar 2. Sarajevo 3. Velez Kup: Velez; Olimpic takes second and replaces Velez in EL (since they take 3rd in BPL)
Re: Premijer Liga 1. Zeljo 2. Borac 3. Sarajevo 4. Siroki 5. Velez Kup: Velez, Zeljo 2nd. I'm really impressed by Velez this seaosn. Their young team could actually rip shit up! Its exciting since Velez is traditionally a big club in former Yugoslavia.
FK Velez Mostar has a great history, winning plenty of things, even in the former Yugoslav League. Here are some of their accomplishments: Yugslav League: Runner-ups (72-73,73-73,85-86), Third-place (69-70,86-87,87-88) Yugoslav Cups: Winners (1981,1986) Runner-ups: (1958,1989) UEFA Cup: Quarterfinals (1974-75) We've recently had a string of friendlies against French opponents. We drew against Brest (1-1) and Sochuax (2-2), both Ligue 1 teams. Right now, Velez Mostar is 1-0 in the BPL, having beaten Celik, 2-1. Here's Velez Mostar's website: http://www.fkvelez.ba/
Fantastic win over Celik, very emotional game according to some of the Velez fans I know. At home to Slavija next, should be able to make it two from two quite easily.
Definitely. In the Celik game, we were missing Tarik Ceric (yet again), and still win. I expect no less than the three possible points in next week's game. Maybe a 2-0 victory, sounds just right.
I just can't believe Zeljo lost their season opener against Siroki Brijeg, 2-1. Although it's not a bad loss, considering Siroki were in EL. I see good things in the future for Zeljeznicar.
Slavija had some real trouble seeing off newcomers GOSK Gabela yesterday at home, so I don't see why Velez aren't favorites for this match. I expect nothing less than a win from them, 4-1 maybe.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75Y1mjs3zbo"]N.K. ?iroki Brijeg - F.K. ?eljezni?ar 2:1 ?‏ - YouTube[/ame] Terrible goals that we conceded, not sure how we managed to lose. That Maccabi Tel-Aviv thrashing is making me feel bad, no way we deserved to lose that 8-0 on aggregate. Only 3 goals that they scored were unstoppable, the rest were our own mistakes.
I wouldn't say we beat them that bad D). We aren't sure what will happen in a football game. Injuries, own goals, etc. could all turn games around.
Lol, Novi Pazar beat Slavija 5-0 recently, and Slavija are one of the contenders to be relegated. I fully expect Velez to at least make it comfortable, especially ahead of a tough game at Kosevo coming afterwards.
Good start, beating Sloboda Tuzla 2-1 at home. It'll take some time for this squad to get rolling and for Plisek to assert himself, but I think they'll do it sooner rather than later. I can definetly see Sarajevo winning the title in all honesty like Zeljo did when they had a new manager and completely new squad.
I wouldn't take this loss (to Siroki) to bad. They are one of the top 5/6 teams in the Premijer Liga.
Haha Siroki always escape by the skin of their teeth somehow, hate them so much. Anyway, it was an away match, we'll be fine.
Kind of late, but here's a report on the game: Velez - Celik 2:1 http://www.fkvelez.ba/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=705:vele-elik-21&catid=35:vijesti

I found a report about the opening round on another forum written by Sasa Ibrulj in English. Good read. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Široki Brijeg - Željezničar 2:1 This was definitely the most interesting match of the first round. Široki finished last season as fourth and Željezničar was third, also winning the Bosnian cup, so opening of the new season at Pecara looked promising. And they didn't disappoint us - three goals, thrilling finish, two own goals, and power went off... The home team took the lead 17 minutes after kick off Goran Zakarić, Dinamo Zagreb player on loan to Široki, had run by the right flank, tried to cross, and found "only" Željezničar's Benjamin Čolić, who smashed the ball behind his own keeper. The Blues than decided to finally open themselves, and we watched much a better match. They dominated in the next ten minutes, which soon brought them the equalizer. The scenario was similar - Zeba tried to pass from the right to the five yard box, where Ćorić reacts clumsy and hits his own net. Start of the second halftime was delayed half an hour. The power went off and the stadium left in the dark. Obviously, that affected the game, and both teams looked poor in the later in. It looked like a certain draw, when the Brazilian Wagner headed a long ball and created the winner for the home team. Velež - Čelik 2:1 Another thriller, another winning goal in a very last second. Velež was nothing but a favorite in this event. Their performances in the preseason, when they drew with French sides Brest (1:1) and Sochaux (2:2), brought huge optimism among their supporters. Even tough, that obviously entailed that huge pressure would be put on them in this match. Čelik, on the other side, came to Mostar with many organization problems, but with a clear objective not to concede a goal. They parked-the-bus in front of their goal and waited for their chance to surprise the home team. And it came after just eight minutes. It was a seemingly harmless situation, Damir Tosunović headed a long ball high to the air, but the sun went to the keeper's eyes and he literally missed what was suppose to be easy catch. Mostar is a beautiful place for the striker. After he scored 4 last season against Velež in this same place, and two more against Zrinjski at Bijeli Brijeg, Tosunović started the new season perfectly. After that, the visiting side became even more defensive, and Velež tried with pressure. They looked idea-less and terrified, but still got their equalizer. Stoppage time of the first half time lasted long enough for Mustafa Kodro to score and make a step forward to the final twist. Velež was much better later on, with pressure on the last line of Čelik's defense, but still without a winning goal. On the contrary, as time passed Čelik looked more serious in their counters, and had a couple of very serious chances. But, they made a wrong decision when decided to lie in most of the game and waste time. That brought them five minutes of extra time, which was used by Velež. The referee was preparing for the final whistle, when Bajro Spahic, who came as a substitute in his debut after changing Željezničar's shirt for the red one, tried in despair and scored what became the winner. Sarajevo - Sloboda 2:1 Preseason impression made by FK Sarajevo and financially troubled Sloboda Tuzla indicated that home team should easily win on their season opening. But, young Tuzla side made huge troubles for Jirzi Plišek team. Altough, that was enough just for a honorable loss. The Maroons were dominating for whole 90 minutes, and won starting three points. Kozara - Borac 0:1 The champions replace title winning manager Vlado Jagodić with Zvjezdan Cvjetković but remain the same style of play. Last season they had away record of six 1-0 wins and five 0-0 draws. Solid defense with fast counters, that was their way of winning the title, which hadn't changed. They opened this season with 1-0 away win in the local derby in Gradiška. Newcomers Kozara did not have enough strength to threaten Banja Luka side. It was a proof that relegation battle is what we can expect from this team. Slavija - GOŠK 1:0 Other newcomers GOŠK come from a small village on the Bosnian-Croatian border called Gabela with only 2600 inhabitants. They totally changed the squad that won First Division, but that was not enough for nothing more than loss in East Sarajevo. Slavija did not impress, but won three very important starting points. Travnik - Zrinjski 2:2 Travnik sold their best striker Nusmir Fajić to Slovenia, and changed most of the squad, so it is one of the unknown sides in the League. Zrinjski, on the other hand, missed European spots for the first time in the last six years and board set high expectations in front of Slaven Musa. Mostar side looked solid in this match, turned the result after they were a goal behind, but lost two points in the very last minute. Rudar - Olimpic 1:1 Third Sarajevo-based club FK Olimpic was the most active in this transfer window. They brought back Vladavic and Jugo from abroad, and most of the experts point them out as the dark-horses this season. They opened it in Prijedor, against average Rudar, claiming only one point. Leotar - Zvijezda 0:0 "Nothing" is the word to describe what we have seen in Trebinje. Zvijezda came to pick up the point with their defensive style, and did it. They used anemic and harmless display by home team, which should be prepared for bitter struggle to top-flight survival.
Oh boy look at that horrific Croat flag at the Stadium < I want to find out whose it is and smash their eyes out with a flaming jar of ajvar.
Our talented young winger Edin Visca is on the verge of joining Istanbul BB, where our starting goalkeeper Kenan Hasagic plays. Details about the deal will be revealed later on. Good luck to Visca in Turkey, hope he continues his development there.
August 13, 2011 Velez Mostar vs. Slavija This one's a definite win, maybe 2-0 or 3-0. If and when we do win this game, we'll be 2-0 to start the season! Very good.
