Benny is excellent player, I ´m sure if he decide for Hamburg,
he will contribute to success of this team...plus Hamburg is
    really great city.....

Not to be disrespectful or anything, but Mexico has enough Jewish people to field a competitive team? I thought Mexico was like 100% Catholic.

I know a jewish guy from Mexico City. I get the impression that the jewish community in Mexico is significantly more insular compared to the USA.

There are Jews all over South America, so I assume there also are in Central. The U.S. rejected many immigrating jews, so they sailed south.

well I think it is better if we don´t discuss about jewish community in mexico or in the USA...i think religion should not play any role with soccer....
Benny Feilhabe is soccer player....this is why we discuss about him at bigsoccer...we should not try to mix religion here...
imagine benny would read this thread, what he would think about us?
so back to benny and soccer...

umm,it's relevant because Benny is in the Maccabi Games, which is an event for Jewish athletes. No disrespect intended towards anyone.

I resisted posting this for a couple of days, but after thinking it thru a few times, I decided it needed saying (or I needed to say it.)

Unaccostomed as I am to serious posts, I want to note that I think it is strange that in a thread about a guy playing in the Maccabiah games in Isreal some posters are concerned about mentioning or discussing whether the cat is Jewish. Clearly, Benny has no such trepidation about his heritage/religion. You don't go to Isreal to play in the Maccabiah games if you are concerned about folks discussing your heritage/religion. The concern about even having the discussion is of concern to me.

If John O'Brien were to attend the Celtic Games in Londonderry, would folks be a bunch of nervous nellies about discussin his Celtic roots? If Reyna attended the Iberian Games? Or the Western Rite games? If Earnie Stewart went to the pan-Germanic games would everyone get their knickers in a knot?

It's really friggin' weird to me. Benny's at the games because obviously he thinks they are an event worth attending. A Jewish event. Why would we be expected to dance around the issue? That makes no sense and pre-emptively implies a pejorative where - for many of us anyway - none exists.

Ok, end of rant, back to my regularly scheduled England66 attacks.

I happen to play for the same club as one of the players on the current Maccabiah team and another player who played at the last Maccabiah games. (I posted a few weeks ago Feilhaber was going to the games and no one picked up on it)

The past Mac. player said his US team was absolutely crushed by Mexico and that they were stunningly good. This is a guy who played pro for a few years in the US (A League, etc.) so I assume he's seen some good teams.

So, US results from the Maccabi Games:

    USA 2:0 Netherlands
    USA 5:0 Canada
    USA 4:1 Argentina
    USA 3:2 South Africa (quarterfinal)
    USA 5:4 Mexico (semifinal)

It looks like we may have dodged a bullet with the Brazilians being disqualified... earlier they ran up 17 goals on Italy and 8 on Germany. But then I also see some lopsided scores from Israel... 11 on Colombia, and 6 on Chile. And Chile actually has a substantial Jewish population.

Anyone know what the Israel team in this competition looks like? If they wanted to, it seems to me like Israel could field virtually their full national team.

seems a tad unfair for Israel to have a team in the Jewish games doesn't it!:)

Our Jews kick ass! I wonder what Fernando Schwarz had to say about that last game.

Why were they disqualified? Did they try and steal Benny back?

Well sure, someone had to take care of all of Pinochet's money.

That's a damn good point. I mean, rolling out Ronny Rosenthal and Co. wouldn't be that fair, would it?

Here is something recent which I believe says that Hamburg expects a decision to be made next week. Can a German speaker give a better translation?

"Entscheidung: Nächste Woche will sich Mittelfeldspieler Benny Feilhaber (USA, 20) entcheiden, ob er nach Hamburg wechselt."
