I'm always looking for something different I would like to have replica of the Ny Giants soccer team Jersey
He stayed with Benfica, from 1959 to 1962 when he clashed with the clubs new president and moved on to Penerol in Uruguay. Meanwhile Benfica were now one of the world's great clubs. They played Penerol in 1961 for the World Club Cup winning the first leg in Lisbon, but losing in Montevideo. One year later they played Santos and Pele, without Guttmann and lost both legs. His long coaching career then took him to the Austrian national team, back to Benfica in 1965 and 1966, then on to Servette in Geneva, Panathinaikos in Athens and finally back to Portugal to coach Porto. He won the Portuguese championship three times, and the Portuguese Cup once, then the championship of Uruguay in 1962. Bela Guttmann, once a star in American soccer, and then a world class coach, died in Vienna on August 28, 1981 at the age of 81.
I wonder if the team colors were black and orange like the baseball Giants, or blue and red like the football Giants?
this thread should go on the Benfica forum, to me the best coach's ever for Benfica, got be Bela Guttman with 2 European CL and Erickson championships, this got be a classic thread how many new the NY Giants was also a Soccer team?
And for those who didnt know,Bela Gutmann stands for Benfica ,like Babe Ruth stood for the Red Sox up till last year.....Why?Because when Gutman left Benfica he said "Never again will Benfica be Champions of Europe"Its called the curse of the Old man....Just before the 1988 and 1990 CL final ,some Benfica administartors visited Gutmans grave in Vienna to pay their respects and also hoping that the curse would be lifted.....It didnt work
if he and Jose Aguas had stayed a couple more years we would at least win one of the next two finals, against Inter and Milan.
he also coach FC Porto the national team, I believe he was the coach of the great run of wins by any portuguese national team, beating Italy 3-1 and England 3-0, with players such Pedroto, Jose Aguas, Matateu, to mention a few. After that, perhaps naturally, it was Portugal, at first with Porto and then the Portuguese national team. Then came the move that made him famous. In 1959 he was appointed coach of Benfica and under his management the Portuguese club, almost unknown beyond its own border at the time, won the Portuguese championship twice, and in 1961 and 1962 won the European Champions Cup, until then almost the exclusive preserve of Real Madrid. That wonderful Benfica team included of course Eusebio, Mario Coluna, Costa Pereira, Jose Aguas and Mario Simoes. Guttmann was said to have been a high spirited, charming man, who quickly gained the confidence and respect of this players. It is also said that he got the best out of them, building his tactics on their strengths and strengthening their weaknesses. Guttman is a legend, probably the best coach that ever walked on this planet. No Mourinho, No Erickson, nobody.
