But think of it this way: Suppose it's a legal download, without the nasty viruses and other crap that you get off the P2P sites. That could result in lot of money being spent. And it's a lot more anonymous than going to a video store and walking out with a stack of pornos. I don't know the specs of the Video iPod's screen, but i'd imagine that it's still small, so it's not like the kid in the seat directly behind Mr. iPodWatcher on the airplane could see. In that regard, the 2 inch (or whatever) screen is far more kid-friendly than a huge laptop screen.
If someone wants to watch it, shouldn't they be allowed to? I don't see how it's affecting my life. Suppose iTunes only sold edited music, and the iPod was created only to play music off iTunes and nothing else. There'd still be someone working out a hack to allow the iPod to play anything. If your neighbor is playing loud music, you tell them to turn it down, either in person, or you call the police and complain. They'll send someone out, even if it takes half an hour. If you're in the library and someone is causing a commotion, you either ask them to be quiet, or you get a librarian for assistance. If two breasts (which all women have), a penis (which all men have) or a butt (which everyone has) is really disturbing you, why not ask them to point their ipod in a different direction? Censorship of someone else's iPod isn't right. Who are you to tell someone what they can and can't put on their iPod? If it's bothering you, either tell the guy to adjust his 2 inch screen, or move yourself. Besides, what are you doing watching his 2 inch screen anyway, especially if it is offensive?
Any of what?? The new iPod? Yes, mine's currently somewhere in Indiana or has left Indiana, whichever. In short, it's on some FedEx truck on the way to my house.
would you mind doing a bit of a review once you receive it? I suppose my main interest is if I can play existing quicktime files. I have some torrents that I'd like to play on there. Wasn't sure if they had to be bought from the iTunes store.
Since this thread has started talking about the new video iPod, I have to ask - you're talking about the Nano, right?
Sure I'll get a review up with some pics after I play with it for a bit. You can convert all quicktime files to the format that's acceptable for the iPod, but you need Quicktime Pro 7.0.3 to do it. It's super easy to do really. If you want to rip a dvd and convert it use Handbrake, it's super easy with that as well.
My pb updates automatically, I can only assume that the new Quicktime is already on there. Honestly I'm dire to get one, it's been some time since I was excited for a product like this.
You'll have Quicktime, but you have to pay for Pro. Or at least know where to get the registration code.
One small tip for those planning to do mass recording/converting for video players: If you find the perfect settings that make the video look just right on a 2 inch screen, it may be best to choose a little higher quality than that. It's very likely that 4-5 inch screens will become the norm soon (I doubt it will ever be much bigger than that) and the hard drives will get bigger too. You don't wanna go through the process again in a year or two or settle for slightly fuzzy/dull picture.
I read on cnet.com that the Ipod Nano doesn't have A/V outs. I've never owned an MP3 player, but since it means visual outs, does that mean that I can hook another type of mp3 player to a TV and play video files like I can with VCD's??
Almost all mp3 players with video capability has the A/V out function. The video files look bad on TV though unless you recored/convert them at a very high quality sacrificing a lot of disk space. That's another thing to consider before mass ripping. You have to decide whether or how much you want to play them on outside screens. Of course, size of the files won't matter much anytime soon if you buy a player with 80-100 gb hard drive.
So the Nano doesn't include it, because it only has a headphone port? Others had a singe line-out as well? Also, do regular hard drive ipods have video capability? And I don't mean the new ones with the 2 inch video screens, the music ones?
To be fair, with the amazing size of ipod nano you can't expect too many features. How much video would you be able to store on a 2-4 gb memory? It's for those who just want to listen to music on a very compact and light device. I guess you have not followed the thread. Apple just got into the portable video business. If you are thinking about buying a multimedia player this site may help you decide.
Well the only thing I'd want the video capibility was because my uncle is a big Serie A fan but is without a computer, if I went there to visit it might be neat to bring over the latest match or show I downloaded, and plug it into his TV. I don't know if that would be a big factor in my decision though, since you said they'd look bad on a TV.
They did look bad on TV but let me make it clear. The quality I selected to record the shows was very poor, just good enough to view on a 2 inch screen (didn't think ahead ). You can't really expect a 30 minute show that is as small as 40 mb to shine on a TV screen. Just record at high quality/resolution, watch and delete when low on disk space or transfer to your PC.
An amazing list of protable video players available on the market. http://www.pvp4u.com/archives/hd_video_players/ This is what the next generation video ipod might look like, with bigger screen.
Interesting. I told AFLette this weekend that I'm gonna wait to buy a video iPod till my extended warranty on my current iPod comes out cause I'm hoping that by then they'll make one with the screen sideways so it can be much bigger and easier to see.
