Spotting Beckham in the first half hour of ABC's presentation of the cup final and in the pregame show there was his commercial "You're watching the MLS". I thought he looked rather uncomfortable saying that, wonder if he did this willingly or was it part of some deal? Either way, anyone else see this?
That was horrendous. Dellacamera even had to mention it about 2 minutes before they aired it - "coming up a message from David Beckham".
They couldn't have got him to say, "You're watching the MLS Cup final on ABC"? How hard would that have been?
That, ahem, pretty boy, could not have been worse. He closed his eyes and obviously rolled them as he said, "MLS". C'mon, no one wants to see him. Now, if it was, say, Owen or Zidane. But I don't know who else are Adidas people. But yeah, the Beckham thing made me mad.
He talked just like you'd expect from someone who had played soccer 4 hours a day from age 10 in the best academies in the world. What do you want? Mr. college-degree Brian McBride instead?
Yes. Ok, well I understand that ABC and MLS wanted someone who was a bona fide celebrity. Anyway, it wasn't the fact that he seemed to mess up his one line that bothered me. It's the indignation he expressed at doing it. Anyway, minor point. I enjoyed the heck out of the game.
Bona fide Euro-snobbery? Maybe he's still upset about the media rejection he received last time he was visiting here.
I remember now. Beckham came is filming a movie about a success story with Ronaldo, and someone else for some an American movie producer. He was visiting CA for couple of days...
Anyone who's seen the closing credits of "Bend it Like Beckham" knows that Mr. Beckham is not what you would call friendly with things like and movie cameras and scripted words...
Beckham probably had to focus on something more important when he was saying his line. Perhaps his train of thought was: "Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out..." [I believe Beckham has told this joke about himself.]
I was just about to start a thread about this. Yeah, I thought it was hilarious. They prompted us before the commercial break that they had an upcoming message from Becks; I was a little excited to see what he had to say, especially since he is supposedly interested in American soccer. Then I see some confused looking guy struggling with whether or not to say "The" or just MLS. In the end he said "Welcome to the MLS Cup"; that was a hell of a message. Almost looked as though he lost a bet and had to say it; pretty funny. But all cynicism aside, at least he knows of the league and mentioned it.
Did you ever think this was a last minute addition to production, that they had been trying for this for awile, but couldnt get it done early due to Becks schedule? Becks has said more then 3 times how he loves the US and thinks great things about the MLS. He is going to make a tremendous amount of money here in about 3 years when he finnally settles in here to live. His wife and he both want to live the Glam' life in LA, she has many close friends here. He has already begun to build towards his academy here and in Manchester.
yeh he will, this isnt speculation though. Heard this from his lips and more than once, his academies have started already in a small setting in LA. I cant right now get the reference, but its the real deal. My personal opinion, and I will hold myself to this, Becks if healthy and after a few more trophies and after 2006 WC will finish his carreer here.
You are being very harsh on him. I think he did really well considering he only learned to read that morning.
Maybe he would have been more comfortable if POsh spice was behind him putting in that strap on up his butt crack, then he would have been truly relaxed and at home with himself
