If Galiza can have a thread, I rather see some talk about the Venice of Portugal the city of Aveiro.
Do you guys ever hear of the Feira do Marco? I still remember going there with my grandparents.
Post any other news about Aveiro in this thread.

How can I ever forget it. I went to school in Aveiro for 3 years and it's just incredible how much it has changed in the last 20 years... I remember drinking "tangos" (finos com grozelha) at 12 years old.

    Venice does, Aveiro doesn't.

PS: I know where you're trying to get at and I'm just sparing you from getting this post from being deleted like a similar one a few weeks ago...

What I remember most is the little carnivals they had like every weekend, with the amazingly super-safe bumper cars. Back in the day those things were just death traps!

Aveiro used to smell like crap at low tide many years ago, mainly because of sewage going into the Ria. They have dramatically cleaned it up and have installed a lock to keep the water at a consistent level and have rebuilt the banks along the river also. However, The paper mill just outside of the city gives off some odd smells depending on which way the wind blows.

    The greatest food there.....ovos moles.

There is a cafe (the name eludes me right now) on the roof of a building right where the Avenida begins that has outstanding views of the city..I remember chiling there every morning reading the paper, having a smoke and a coffee and enjoying the view. Awesome!

Averio has grown, but more importantly so have the Gafanhas just outside it. My mother is from Gafanha de Nazare (which i will be visiting next month) and the little town has been classed as a City...weird. The one thing I love about aveiro are the salt marshes...My grandfather tells me his childhood stories about working there and how he used to walk there with no shoes, up hill both ways.....

Aveiro, wonderfull city. The palyground for the Viseu youth. Wonderfull city, I try to make a few weekends a year at praia da barra. I do miss the old Quebra Mar nightclub. The Forum is nice, playng b-ball inside Sports Zone is always fun. Nice restaurants, clean city, and no it does not smell. My second favorite city in Portugal.

    City's Information

The seat of the municipality is the city of Aveiro, with about 50,000 inhabitants in the 5 urban parishes. Located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, Aveiro is an industrial city with an important seaport. The city of Aveiro is also the Capital of the District of Aveiro.

Aveiro is known in Portugal for its traditional sweets, the ovos-moles and the trouxas de ovos, both made from eggs. It is sometimes called "The Portuguese Venice" because of its canals and boats that remind one of the Italian city of Venice. As the city faced similar problems when it tried to conquer the water.

The city dates back at least to the 10th century when it was known by it's first Latin name of Aviarium, literally, "a gathering place or preserve of birds". The Moors invaded and then held it until the 14th century, after which it became popular with Portuguese royalty. In the winter of 1575, a terrible storm closed the entrance to its port, ending a thriving trade in metals and tiles. The same storm also created a reef barrier at the Atlantic Ocean.

The city is also famous for its production of salt and for its seaweed harvest which is used for fertilizer in the area.

João Alfonso, one of the discoverers of the Newfoundland fisheries, was born there.

The city is also famous for the Convento de Jesus (now known as the city museum), built in the 15th century, which contains the tomb of the daughter of Alfonso V, St. Joana, who died in 1490. The presence of this royal personage, beatified in 1673, proved to be of great benefit when she bequeathed her valuable estate to the convent. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the convent housed a school of embroidery, which produced many of the sumptuous pieces kept in the museum.

Aveiro hosted 3 games of the 2004 European Football Championship.

The University of Aveiro was created in 1973 and is considered one of the most dynamic and innovative universities of Portugal, attracting thousands of students to the city. The University has about 430 professors (with Ph.D. degree), 11,000 undergraduate students and 1,300 post-graduate students.

just got back from the motherland......it was a great trip. Saww thw whole family living ones and dead ones (morbid, i know) The loja at beira mars stadium SUCKS. Sadly, the building is starting to fall apart. Tiles are falling off, cement parging is falling. Coloured metal panels are faded, cracking and dirty. There is absolutely nothing around the stadium. How do there ever expect to make money and attract fans hmoes need to be built and maybe even a small shooping centre.

The plan to build a stadium like that in that location now seems a bit to ambitious. They should have built it where the old one is...right in the heart of the city. Easy access for all ppl...old and young.

anyways, weather was decent but i'm glad to be back

The São Bernardo juniors team had some great players auntil 2 years ago (when I saw their last game, against... Avanca!). The Benfica's younger goalkeeper is a 1st year senior that played in São Bernardo until last season!
