San Jose Earthquakes sign naming rights deal as stadium cost soars Chico Enterprise-Record "The San Jose Earthquakes have signed their first stadium naming rights deal, teaming up with a Silicon Valley technology company [Avaya Stadium] for one of the richest team sponsorships in Major League Soccer"
Avaya's a pretty good sponsor to get on board, particularly for a team that used to have Amway on their jerseys and practice at the Nutralite Center (or something like that). Hopefully they can get a jersey sponsor of similar prestige.
To be fair, once the Amway jersey sponsorship ended after the 2011 season, the practice facility's name changed from Nutralite Training Facility to San Jose Earthquakes Training Facility. It remains to be seen if the Avaya stadium sponsorship will change the name of the training facility as well. -G
$2 million per year is tied for 3rd highest in mls. Really? Seems average to me. Is there a list somewhere?
can't find a list but it might be close. Seattle, DC, New England, NYCFC, Vancouver, and Orlando (for now) don't play in soccer stadiums. KC and Columbus don't have sponsors. Red Bull and Montreal have their owner's companies. So the only MLS soccer stadiums with sponsors: - Salt Lake - LA - Colorado - Dallas - Houston - Toronto - Chicago - Salt Lake - San Jose - Philadelphia two of them (Portland and Philadelphia) are sponsored by a health system and utility, respectively. doubt those are > $2M.
Maybe it's true. Here's a list: http://www.thesportmarket.biz/charts/stadiumstats/namingrights/ranktop.html
Fine...now let's see it ON THE FIELD, Wolff. Enough of this Atiba Harris/Sam Cronin/Shea Salinas nonsense.

New excuse will probably just shift from not generating enough gameday revenue to well we have to pay off our stadium construction debt now (which I do commend him for privately financing this).
I'm a "fan of the league", as they say. And it would be bad for the league to watch the Quakes get repeatedly murdered by a relentless horde of Western Conf. opponents in their own brand spanking new building next year. Or, at least I think it would....
To be fair, they did quietly sign what I think is their first 7-figure DP (Matias Perez-Garcia), or at least the transfer figure was likely in the 7 figures. So, 2 DP's now. But still a lot of work to do on the roster... Yeah, and even if you are a fan of a Quakes rival, you may not want them to be eye-gougingly bad, which is what they were last year.
Lower right of Avaya/USA's homepage Coincidentally, recently partnered with Kroenke Sports to open a business center at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
Great list! It lists the Home Depot Center at $7m a year. When it changed to Stub Hub, this article mentioned up to $10m a year but looking at the list you linked, that seems awful high. http://m.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2013/03/04/Facilities/StubHub.aspx? I wonder why Coors field is so low?
I didn't know most stadiums in the US make only so much off naming rights. MLS stadiums are comparable to all other sports league in these terms. Red Bull Arena would probably get significantly more if they allowed someone else to sponsor it. The nearby Prudential Center is getting $5.25 million a year.
This might be an ignorant question, but why build a double-sided video board? To me, it doesn't look like it will serve fans in the stadium, so who is it for? If it's just for advertising during non-game times, that seems awfully expensive.
