American Claims Discovery of Atlantis

LIMASSOL, Cyprus - An American researcher claimed Sunday to have discovered the remains of the legendary lost city of Atlantis on the bottom of the east Mediterranean Sea, but Cyprus' chief government archaeologist was skeptical.

Robert Sarmast said sonar scanning 50 miles southeast of Cyprus revealed man-made walls, one as long as 2 miles, and trenches at a depth of 1,640 yards.

"It is a miracle we found these walls as their location and lengths match exactly the description of the acropolis of Atlantis provided by Plato in his writings," Sarmast said, referring to the ancient Greek philosopher.

If we were to assume that the Western Mediterranean was unknown to the Hellenistic Greeks then Sardinia would fit Plato's description of Atlantis all too well. First move the Pillars of Hercules back from Gibraltar to the Straits of Messina located between the Southern tip of Italy and Sicily. Sardinia is a large island beyond the Straits of Messina. There are the Baleares, a chain of islands from Sardinia leading Westward. And a great continent surrounds Sardinia if together we include Spain, France, Italy and North Africa.

Incididentally, a recent theory elaborated by the Sardinian writer Sergio Frau, has it that the Columns of Hercules are no longer to be considered to be at the Gibralter Straits, but much closer, between the African coast and Sicily and Atlantis to be the isle of Sardinia. This theory is based on the fact that the sea level was much lower after that last ice age, so that the strait was much narrower and beyond it lay the unknown.

Did anybody of you had a look to the interesting theory and book of
italian reporter Sergio Frau: "Le Colonne D'Ercole" (The pillars of Hercules")?
May be there is not an english version.
Visit and translate by yourselves the www.colonnedercole.it website.
I think that everything is there well explained.

Some suggestions from that book:

1) Atlantis and the "sea peoples" coalition are mostly the same thing.
2) The western mediterranean sea was the "true ocean" before Hellenes were comfortable to seal through the straits around Sicily.
3) The geographical separation between western and eastern mediterannean was, after Atlantis times, defined in the Greek/Phoenician geopolitical division.
4) Hellenistic and post-classic re-setting of geographics (topographics) and history brought the mediterranean profile that we today know: hercules pillars at Gibraltair and so on.
