    Copa do Brasil: Sport 4 x 1 Atlético-MG

You must be a genius, because you chose the best team in Brazil to support! Atletico Mineiro has one of the largest traditions in Brazil, and largest fan base. Infact, Atleico's supporters, known as Atleticanos, are known for being the most loyal and crazy fans in Brazil.

As for the city of Belo Horizonte...I dont know who said it wasnt a pretty city, but he was dead wrong! BH, as its known is very nice. Ok, there are no beaches, but is that the basis for a city being good? Belo Horizonte is known as the Garden City, for all the trees and parks the city boasts in all parts. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains-hence the name of the city: beautiful horizon- and when driving through it you are reminded of San Francisco: hills everywhere!

It is Brazil's third largest city, with about 4 million people. And they are beautiful people! The majority in BH are Portuguese/Italian descent...creating a nice combination.

Check out this site to see what people from Belo Horizonte look like:

Try not to drool too much!

I know this may sound like a daft question, but why are Atletioc Mineiro sometimes known as Atletico MG? Sure, I can see why Atletico Paranaense are Atletico PR, but where does the G come from in MG?

    Re: Atletico Mineiro

Atletico Mineiro is located in the city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais - hence the "MG". There is also a team in Belo Horizonte that alternates between the First and Second Division called America-MG (to distiguish it from two other "America" teams.)

    Re: Atletico Mineiro

    Lets start!

This season the board decided to invest in an whole new squad due to the poor performance of last year's squad.

So far, 11 players have been purchased. Among them Fabio Junior and an Argentine midfielder named Prieto.

As of 2/15 we are 4 games into the season, all 4 were Minas Gerais State Chamionship games. The first we lost to a small club from the countryside named Valeriodoce. The loss was attributed to poor calls from the Ref, and prompted the Atletico Board of Directors to demand that all Atletico games be officialed by out of state refs.

The request was not formalized in time for the second match, so in state referees were used again. This time we played strong and came out on top 3x2 over another club from the countryside, Ituiutaba.

Our 3rd game against Democrata saw the arrival of out of state refs from Sao Paulo to officiate the match. This match proved the strength of our new 2005 squad. Our young home bred striker, Quirino who also plays for Brazil's Under 20 squad scored 3 and our veteran striker Euller(who is another new name this year) scored 1 as we prevailed 4x0.

With that we went into our 4th game confident and upbeat. This time around our opponents were Villa Nova from the city with the same name which is 40 minutes outside Belo Horizonte. The match between Atletico and Villa Nova is the oldest in the state of Minas Gerais, having been played since the turn of the Century.

With Quirino showing another fine performance with another hat trick, we took Villa Nova down 4x1 and settled into 2nd place in the Minas Championship behind Cruzeiro with Quirino as the top goal scorer of the competition.

Our next match is against Estrela do Norte for the Brazilian Cup. The match will be played on 2/16 at their home field in the state of Espirto Santo. They are an obscure club, but we will take the game seriously none the less.

However, no one can deny the game we are really looking forward to. Sundays match against our rivals, Cruzeiro.

The AtleticoxCruzeiro rivalry is one of the biggest in Brazil, and always draws out crowds in numbers between 35,000 to 80,000. It should be an incredible game, and could determine who the next Minas State Champion will be.

Look for more updates as they come along!

    GALO FORTE VINGADOR!

    Re: Atletico Mineiro

Atletico today announced they have signed their last reinforcment for the season.

He is Sebastián Morquio, a Uruguaian Central Defender who is known for scaring the hell out of opposing teams. He previously defended Club El Porvenir from Argentina as well as Nacional from Uruguay plus stints at Huracan and Alianza from Lima, Peru.

His signing should round out our 2005 roster!

    Re: Atletico Mineiro

Cerezo was great! But the best I would say was Reinaldo! No match there!

O Rei was Brazil's top goal scorer for 27 years until Edmundo broke his record by 1 goal in the late 90s. That is something!

Vivo at Wembley. Seen him on TV a few times - see his great goal v Bolivia in La Paz in 1981. Pity he was absent in 1982 (but that is another subject)
